Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of ion beams for the modification of the structure and properties of the near-surface region of ceramics began in earnest in the early 19805. Since the mechanical properties of such materials are dominated by surface flaws and the surface stress state, the use of surface modification tech niques would appear to be an obvious application. As is often the case in research and development, most of the initial studies can be characterized as cataloging the response of various ceramic materials to a range of ion beam treatments. The systematic study of material and ion beam parameters is well underway and we are now designing experiments to provide specific information about the processing parameter - structure-property rela tionships. This NATO-Advanced Study Institute was convened in order to assess our current state of knowledge in this field, to identify opportunities and needs for further research, and to identify the potential of such processes for technological application. It became apparent that this class of inorganic compounds, loosely termed ceramics, presents many challenges to the understanding of ion-solid inter actions, the relationships among ion-beam parameters, materials parameters, and the resulting structures, as well as relationships between structure and properties. In many instances, this understanding will represent a major extension of that learned from the study of metals and semiconductors.

Book excerpt: The use of ion beams for the modification of the structure and properties of the near-surface region of ceramics began in earnest in the early 1980s. Since the mechanical properties of such materials are dominated by surface flaws and the surface stress state, the use of surface modification techniques would appear to be an obvious application. As is often the case in research and development, most of the initial studies can be characterized as cataloging the response of various ceramic materials to a range of ion beam treatments. The systematic study of material and ion beam parameters is well underway and we are now designing experiments to provide specific information about the processing parameter - property relationships. The first group of lectures dealt structure-property with the fundamentals of ion-solid interactions and the defect structure of compounds. Chemical and thermodynamic factors appear to be significantly more important than for simple metallic systems. The second group of lectures concerned the experimentally observed microstructural features and phase structures that develop during ion-beam processing of ceramics. The properties of ion-implanted and ion-beam-mixed ceramics were treated in Part III, and included discussions on mechanical, tribological, chemical, electrical, and optical properties. The final section was concerned with thin films and coatings prepared by ion-beam-assisted processes. Symposia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide variety of structures are produced by ion implantation in ceramics. Random (substitutional and interstitial site occupancy) solid solutions with concentrations of solute that exceed the solubility limit can be produced in Al2O3. The changes that occur during annealing are complex and sometimes unpredictable. Silicon carbide becomes amorphous in a manner analogous to Si for ion fluences that produce more than 0.2 dpa damage. Light (N) and heavy (Cr) ions produce similar results if the fluence is scaled to damage energy deposited. Because of mass differences in the ions, two damage regions are developed in TiB2. The structure remains crystalline to very high damage levels. These structural alterations cause changes in the surface mechanical properties. Since virtually any chemical species can be implanted, one can independently control structural damage and chemical effects. When coupled with selective annealing, this technique has the potential for producing a wide range of surface structures and properties. 8 figures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser and Ion Beam Modification of Materials is a compilation of materials from the proceedings of the symposium U: Material Synthesis and Modification by Ion beams and Laser Beams. This collection discusses the founding of the KANSAI Science City in Japan, and the structures, equipment, and research projects of two institutions are discussed pertaining to eV-MeV ion beams. A description of ion beams as used in materials research and in manufacturing processes, along with trends in ion implantation technology in semiconductors, is discussed. Research into ion beams by China and its industrial uses in non-semiconductor area is noted. For industrial applications, developing technology in terms of high speed, large surface modifications and use of high doses is important. Thus, the development of different ion beam approaches is examined. Industrial applications of ion and laser processing are discussed as cluster beams are used in solid state physics and chemistry. Mention is made on a high power discharge pumped solid state physics (ArF) excimer laser as a potential light source for better material processing. Under ion beam material processing is nanofabrication using focused ion beams, important for research work in mesoscopic systems. Progress in the use of ion-beam mixing using kinetic energy of ion-beams to mingle with pre-deposited surface layers of substrate materials has shown promise. Advanced materials researchers and scientists, as well as academicians in the field of nuclear physics, will find this collection helpful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the method of ion beam modification of solids in realization, theory and applications in a comprehensive way. It provides a review of the physical basics of ion-solid interaction and on ion-beam induced structural modifications of solids. Ion beams are widely used to modify the physical properties of materials. A complete theory of ion stopping in matter and the calculation of the energy loss due to nuclear and electronic interactions are presented including the effect of ion channeling. To explain structural modifications due to high electronic excitations, different concepts are presented with special emphasis on the thermal spike model. Furthermore, general concepts of damage evolution as a function of ion mass, ion fluence, ion flux and temperature are described in detail and their limits and applicability are discussed. The effect of nuclear and electronic energy loss on structural modifications of solids such as damage formation, phase transitions and amorphization is reviewed for insulators and semiconductors. Finally some selected applications of ion beams are given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ion implantation technology has made a major contribution to the dramatic advances in integrated circuit technology since the early 1970's. The ever-present need for accurate models in ion implanted species will become absolutely vital in the future due to shrinking feature sizes. Successful wide application of ion implantation, as well as exploitation of newly identified opportunities, will require the development of comprehensive implant models. The 141 papers (including 24 invited papers) in this volume address the most recent developments in this field. New structures and possible approaches are described. The implications for ion implantation technology as well as additional observations of needs and opportunities are discussed. The volume will be of value to all those who are interested in acquiring a more complete understanding of the current developments in ion implantation processes and comprehensive implant models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface & Coatings Technology, Volumes 59–60 presents the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Plasma Surface Engineering, held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on October 26–29, 1992. This book discusses the widespread applications of plasma and particle beam assisted methods in surface and thin film technology. Volume 59 is organized into 11 parts encompassing 69 chapters while Volume 60 is comprised of eight parts encompassing 49 chapters. This compilation of papers begins with an overview of the kinetic modelling of low pressure high frequency discharges. This text then examines the effect of various deposition parameters on the growth of chamber wall deposits. Other chapters consider the physiochemical behavior of ceramic materials for space applications. This book discusses as well the economic aspects of the application of plasma surface technologies. The reader is also introduced to the environmental aspects of physical vapor deposition coating technology. This book is a valuable resource for plasma surface engineers, technologists, and researchers.
