Book Synopsis Microtexture Determination and Its Applications by : V. Randle
Download or read book Microtexture Determination and Its Applications written by V. Randle and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cornerstone in the study of both natural and technological materials is characterisation of microstructure. In the widest sense this topic encompasses, for all phases present: morphology, including size and shape distributions; chemical composition; crystallographic parameters, including orientation and orientation relationships. A landmark advance for the materials community occurred with the genesis of 'microtexture', which for the first time provided integration of crystallographic parameters and other aspects of the microstructure. A definition of microtexture is: 'a population of crystallographic orientations whose individual components are linked to their location within the microstructure.' The term microtexture also describes any experimental technique used to determine this information. Essentially, a stationary beam of electrons is diffracted by atomic planes in the sampled volume of specimen. Analysis of the resulting diffraction pattern provides crystallographic information which can be related back to its position of origin. An estimated 95 percent of microtexture determination is by 'electron backscatter diffraction' (EBSD) in a scanning electron microscope (SEM), with the remaining 5 percent contributed mainly by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) counterparts to EBSD. Evaluation (indexing) of EBSD diffraction patterns and output of data in a variety of formats is in most cases fully automated. The most exciting EBSD output is an 'orientation map', which is a quantitative depiction of the microstructure in terms of its orientation constituents. Microtexture determination is now firmly established as the most comprehensive experimental tool for quantitative characterisation and analysis of microstructure, and is used extensively in both research and industry. Much has changed since this book was first published and the second edition has been completely rewritten to reflect these changes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting emerging methods and the evolution of the field, Introduction to Texture Analysis: Macrotexture, Microtexture, and Orientation Mapping keeps mathematics to a minimum in covering both traditional macrotexture analysis and more advanced electron-microscopy-based microtexture analysis. The authors integrate the two techniques and address the subsequent need for a more detailed explanation of philosophy, practice, and analysis associated with texture analysis. The book illustrates approaches to orientation measurement and interpretation and elucidates the fundamental principles on which measurements are based. Thoroughly updated, this Third Edition of a best-seller is a rare introductory-level guide to texture analysis. Discusses terminology associated with orientations, texture, and their representation, as well as the diffraction of radiation, a phenomenon that is the basis for almost all texture analysis Covers data acquisition, as well as representation and evaluation related to the well-established methods of macrotexture analysis Updated to include experimental details of the latest transmission or scanning electron microscope-based techniques for microstructure analysis, including electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) Describes how microtexture data are evaluated and represented and emphasizes the advances in orientation microscopy and mapping, and advanced issues concerning crystallographic aspects of interfaces and connectivity Offers new and innovative grain boundary descriptions and examples This book is an ideal tool to help readers in the materials sciences develop a working understanding of the practice and applications of texture.
