The book that examines using Kaldor's increasing returns methodology to examine in aggregate terms the significance of manufacturing FDI in the national economy, and in the individual manufacturing industries using trade ratios, productivity and linkage coefficients. This book was released on 2015 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flows of world foreign direct investment (FDI) have been increasing; however, there has been a shift in the inflows of FDI from developed to developing countries. The shift raises questions on the factors that have attracted the inflows of FDI despite the benefits believed to be brought by FDI on the host economy. Thus, the objectives of this study are to examine determinants of inward flows of FDI, determine the impact of FDI on economic growth and examine the impact of FDI on employment, particularly in Malaysia. In examining the determinants of FDI, this study employed the bounds test (ARDL) approach for the study period between 1970 to 2009. Results indicate the existence of co-integration relationships among underlying variables. Trade openness and exchange rates are found to be the most robust and consistent variables in the short run and long run. Trade openness is found to be positive and significant, while exchange rates are found to be negative and significant in influencing the inward flows of FDI. In determining the impact of FDI on economic growth, this study utilized the Johansen-Juselius VECM approach for the period between 1970 to 2012. Based on the model which comprised of real GDP, FDI, trade openness and government development expenditure, this study proves the existence of a long run relationship among the variables with FDI and trade openness exert a positive and significant influence on the Malaysian economic growth. Finally, in examining the impact of FDI on the Malaysian employment condition, this study applied a panel data analysis of pooled, random and fixed effects models. The underlying variables are employment, FDI, real wages and gross output of five different sub-sectors for the period between 2000 to 2010. Results of robust fixed effects indicate that only the gross output is positive and significant in influencing employment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaysian Industrial Policy argues that selective government promotion efforts have been successful and crucial for Malaysias industrialisation despite some disastrous consequences associated with the Mahathir governments heavy industrialisation programme. The authors present evidence to show that direct and indirect government interventions have induced and supported investments, accelerating the structural transformation of the Malaysian economy. However, industrial development in Malaysia has been modest compared with that in Northeast Asia because of weaknesses in industrial policy andexcessive reliance on foreign investments.

Book excerpt: The role of FDI in promoting economic growth in developing countries is undisputable. While FDI helps to fill the investment-saving gap problem, it is also one of the main channels for foreign technology transfer, which in turn contributes to boosting the productivity of manufacturing sector. The empirical findings of this study suggest that economic growth in Malaysia has been considerably influenced by capital input, especially from FDIs. The empirical evidences show that FDI has played a crucial role in the development by strengthening the labor productivity through capital goods in the form of embodied technology. At the same time, however, such kind of FDI-driven industrial progress in Malaysia is vulnerable to charging pattern of FDI flows from industrialized countries to latecomer countries, especially China. The findings of this study therefore suggest that, while outward-looking strategy remains desirable to promote economic growth in Malaysia, it is enhance the productivity of domestic production factors. This includes improvement of human capital, greater R&D activities, and diversification of manufacturing activities in which Malaysia possesses a specific comparative advantage.

Book Synopsis Inward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Local Innovative Capacity by : Abd Rahim Jaguli
Download or read book Inward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Local Innovative Capacity written by Abd Rahim Jaguli and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to examine the impact of various channels of technology spillovers on local innovative capacity at national and firm level. At national level, the thesis investigates the drivers of Malaysia"s innovative capacity and the effect of international external sources on innovative capacity. At firm level, this thesis examines the impact of FDI on the innovation progress and studies whether multinational corporations (MNCs) can act as catalysts to stimulate local firms" innovation activities in Malaysia. Via a case study analysis at firm level, this thesis focuses on knowledge transfer through backward linkages established between MNCs and their local suppliers. Time series data analysis is conducted to provide empirical evidence of the effect of FDI spillovers on Malaysia"s innovative capacity at national level. Additionally, a case-study approach is adopted to investigate the impact of vertical FDI spillovers on the innovation performance of local Malaysian firms. The key findings of the study reveal that export-related spillovers are positively associated with Malaysia"s innovative capacity, whereas importrelated spillovers play a minor role in local innovation. The findings also indicate that there is no significant correlation between economic development and local innovation, which suggests that strong economic growth is not a necessary condition in order for Malaysia to enhance its local innovative capacity. The results suggest that there is strong evidence of the importance of foreign innovation activities to local innovative capacity at national level. In contrast, knowledge spillovers measured by FDI inflows have no significant impact on local innovative capacity. The results showed that FDI might be constrained by the fact that spillovers are more likely to take place through vertical relationships than horizontal relationships. At firm level, the study suggests that knowledge and technology can be diffused through high-quality and standard requirements imposed by MNCs, the assessment and feedback and training programmes offered by MNCs to local suppliers, as well as the production process itself. These results extend ii the existing literature on national innovative capacity and validate earlier theoretical and empirical research on vertical spillovers. The findings from the thesis also have important policy and managerial implications with regard to the impact of FDI on host developing countries.

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in South Asia written by Pravakar Sahoo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1990s, the governments of South Asian countries acted as ‘facilitators’ to attract FDI. As a result, the inflow of FDI increased. However, to become an attractive FDI destination as China, Singapore, or Brazil, South Asia has to improve the local conditions of doing business. This book, based on research that blends theory, empirical evidence, and policy, asks and attempts to answer a few core questions relevant to FDI policy in South Asian countries: Which major reforms have succeeded? What are the factors that influence FDI inflows? What has been the impact of FDI on macroeconomic performance? Which policy priorities/reforms needed to boost FDI are pending? These questions and answers should interest policy makers, academics, and all those interested in FDI in the South Asian region and in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
