Book Synopsis Girls Transforming by : Sanna Lehtonen
Download or read book Girls Transforming written by Sanna Lehtonen and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores representations of girlhood and young womanhood in recent English language children's fantasy by focusing on two fantastic body transformation types: invisibility and age-shifting. Drawing on recent feminist and queer theory, the study discusses the tropes of invisibility and age-shifting as narrative devices representing gendered experiences. The transformations offer various perspectives on a girl's changing body and identity and provide links between real-life and fantastic discourses of gender, power, invisibility and aging. The main focus is on English-language fantasy published since the 1970s but the motifs of invisibility and age-shifting in earlier tales and children's books is reviewed; this is the first study of children's fantasy literature that considers these tropes at length. Novels discussed are from both critically acclaimed authors and the less well known. Most of the novels depicting invisible or age-shifting girls are neither thoroughly conventional nor radically subversive but present a range of styles. In terms of gender, children's fantasy novels can be more complex than they are often interpreted to be.

Book Synopsis The Peculiar Point of View by : Mary Johnson
Download or read book The Peculiar Point of View written by Mary Johnson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-04-30 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone has a point of view. For some, it is a thought or an opinion for a while and can change. For some, it becomes a chosen path for life. Thoughts although unseen can be powerful. Some thoughts evolve into creative dreams and achievements. Depending on a personal point of view, a dream can foster an aspiration. A dream is most often thought to be an image or an emotion occurring during sleep. Some believe dreams are formed by the psych. Still, others feel that dreams can be warnings and even predict future events. Dreams can be pleasant or sad. Regardless of how one might view dreams—everybody has them. The main character in this story, Walt Norman, wants to become an architect. In his point of view, his dream of being one can be accomplished by the path, he alone chooses to take. He believes in God and reads the word. He prays and seeks direction and answers. Yet he is reluctantly influenced by a recurring night vision. His Christian belief causes him to develop what seems to others to be a peculiar point of view. Walt is a genius when it comes to architectural design but fails to understand the blueprint of the master designer. He also misinterprets the term peculiar people introduced in 1 Peter 2:9, KJV. Can he fulfill his life-long dream? There are different obstacles that come to block him from reaching his goal. The story has some twists and turns but makes for eye-opening reading.

Book Synopsis The Ancient Memory and Other Stories by : John G. Neihardt
Download or read book The Ancient Memory and Other Stories written by John G. Neihardt and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1998-08-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death-defying and vulnerable fur-traders and Indians, demi-devils and almost-angels, and other complex personalities come fully to life in The Ancient Memory, which completes the collecting of John G. Neihardt's early short fiction begun with The End of the Dream and Other Stories. Originally published in popular magazines between 1905 and 1908, these stories about the American frontier illustrated Neihardt's artistry in the short form and foreshadow the themes, situations, and characterizations of his later, better-known work. Although two of the Indian stories, the ironic "Feather for Feather" and the satirical "A Political Coup at Little Omaha," were collected in The Lonesome Trail in 1907, none has been reprinted since early in the twentieth century. Other stories included here are "Like a Woman," featuring the plucky Pelagie, and "The Face in the Balcony," which is dedicated to "those who have gone through life misunderstood." "The Epic-Minded Scot," about a stranger who is stubbornly idealistic and scrupulous, is considered one of Neihardt's best tales. "The Brutal Fact" revolves around a William Tell type of contest between trapping partners that anticipates Neihardt's Song of Three Friends. "The Lure of Woman," a study of greed and revenge, was expanded into his novel Life's Lure. The ineffable "Ancient Memory" carries profound philosophical implications while presenting a strange doppelgänger of sorts. Finally, the memorable Waters—an alcoholic, one-legged, one-eyed frontier printer—is introduced in "The Discarded Fetish," which, with minor changes, became the first half of the novel The Dawn-Builder. In her foreword Neihardt's daughter Hilda Neihardt recalls intimate details incidental to the writing of these stories.
