Book excerpt: Mutual fund is a mechanism for pooling the resources by issuing units to the investors and investing funds in securities in accordance with their objectives. Investors need to know how risky individual assets are and what their contribution to the total risk of a portfolio would be. Plenty of Mutual Funds are available where the investors can put their money. Before investing they want to know which fund gives more return, which fund is performing well, which fund is more risky etc. In this study the performance evaluation of balanced mutual funds scheme is carried out through risk adjusted performance measure by Sharpe's, Treynor's, Jensen's Index which will ultimately help investors to choose the best mutual fund generating maximum return with minimum risk. Risk and return can be analyzed by finding out Average Return, Standard Deviation and Beta. The data used is monthly closing NAV recorded in the period starting from 1st April 2011 to 31st March 2012. Single year has been taken in the present times; it is tough to take any year as a normal year. The study reveals that private sector has performed better as compared to its counterpart in case of average return, standard deviation and beta. The risk-adjusted performance measures depicted poor performance of the sample schemes but public sector was preferred in this regard.

Over the past half century an important body of academic research has addressed various issues about the nature of these companies. These works focus on a wide range of topics, including fund performance, investment style, and expense issues, among others. MUTUAL FUNDS: Fifty Years of Research Findings is designed for the academic researcher interested in the various issues surrounding mutual funds and for the practitioner interested in funds for investment purposes. The authors briefly trace the historical evolution of funds, present important aspects of the Investment Company Act of 1940, and then summarize a substantial portion of the academic literature which has been written over the past five decades. "This book presents an outstanding wealth of information on mutual funds in a remarkably readable format. It is probably the most comprehensive work currently available on funds. The book sheds light on the numerous issues surrounding mutual fund performance and pricing and is an important resource for any serious investor." Kathleen A. Wayner, Bowling Portfolio Management, President and CEO

It contains three essays in which we develop and adapt a performance measurement approach that accounts for investor disagreement and clientele effects to answer three research questions. In the first essay, we investigate investor disagreement and clientele effects in performance evaluation by developing a measure that considers the best potential clienteles of mutual funds. The measure is an upper performance bound in an incomplete market under the law-of-one-price condition and a no-good-deal condition that rules out investment opportunities with unreasonably high Sharpe ratios. We find that considering investor disagreement and focusing on the best potential clienteles lead to a generally positive performance for mutual funds. The total disagreement measured by the difference between upper and lower performance bounds is economically and statistically significant. In the second essay, we diagnose the validity of standard performance measures by comparing their alphas with the alpha from a performance measure that evaluates mutual funds from the point of view of their most favorable investors. The results show that unconditional linear factor models, their conditional versions and the law-of-one price measure give severe but admissible evaluations of fund performance. Consumption-based models suffer from an inadmissibility problem. The manipulation proof performance measure generates alphas that are sensitive to the choice of risk aversion parameter. In the third essay, we propose a clientele-specific performance evaluation based on the style preferences of mutual fund investors. Considering performance disagreement and better exploiting style classification data, we investigate eight measures to represent clienteles with favorable preferences for size and value equity styles. We find that funds assigned to size and value styles have neutral to positive average alphas when evaluated with their appropriate clientele-specific measure. The performance of the other funds is sensitive to the clienteles. Our findings support a significant role for style clienteles in performance evaluation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of mutual funds for individual investors has increased in recent decades. This becomes apparent when looking at the increased share of households owning mutual funds. These mutual fund investors usually want to receive a return which is above or at least close to the mutual fund’s benchmark. Consequently, investors want to invest in those funds which will show these patterns in the future. Some of these mutual funds receive much attention, since they generate extraordinary high performance. But the question that remains is whether it is possible to predict such performance before funds exhibit such outstanding performance. In the past, mutual fund investors focused extensively on performance or performance linked patterns, like the Morningstar star rating, and thus chased past performance. This seems surprising since performance persists only over a short time and is more persistent to weak mutual funds (1 and 2 star rated) than well performing mutual funds. Thus, chasing past performances seems to be a rather inferior strategy. Therefore, investors should try to identify alternative tools showing a high correlation to future mutual fund performance. In this book, mutual funds are analysed, especially open-end mutual funds and actively managed mutual funds. The main focus is on what purpose and usefulness active investments have and whether performance is persistent and what the determinants of mutual fund flows are. Moreover, some alternative measures will be introduced by explaining which attributes or methods should be used and avoided when selecting mutual funds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 2,0, University of Hohenheim (Institut für Financial Management), language: English, abstract: The aim of this study is to identify differences in investment behavior - and in particular the special case of a team's decision-making process - as well as possible performance indicators. The research results to be presented should be used as guidance in selecting an appropriate management structure for the mutual fund industry. Before addressing the differing investment behaviors of the two management structures, the special dynamics that can operate within a team in decision making have to be examined. For this said purpose, the relevant literature provides some conflicting theories on decision making. When looking at the proportion of team-managed and single-managed mutual funds, it is observed that team funds have increased at the cost of single-managed funds. Thus, from 1992 to 2015, within all mutual funds, team-managed funds increased from 12% to 57%, while single-managed funds decreased from 88% to 43%. A similar development can be seen in the change of the management structure of a fund in Figure 1: A total of 553 mutual funds, which were previously managed individually, switched to a team fund, whereas only 317 funds changed from a team-managed fund to an single-managed fund. A crossover in the proportion of teams after the global financial crisis in 2008, in times when risk reduction by diversification began to gain in importance, is clearly observable. Thus, it should be in the interest of mutual funds to possess sufficient management diversity to reach an adequate niveau of diversification. As argued by Tom Stevenson, the investment director of Fidelity International, besides gender diversity, diversity in cognition, education and mindset represent a great strength. Research on the mutual fund industry indicates some differences in the investment behavior between team-managed and single-managed mutual funds. Especially concerning teams, different theories of decision making can be found, resulting in different investment styles and performance levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mutual funds form the bedrock of retirement savings in the United States, and, considering their rapid growth over recent decades, are sure to become even more financially critical in the coming decades. Because the size of fees paid by investors to mutual fund advisers can strongly affect the return on investment, these fees have become contentious in Congress and the courts, with many arguing that investment advisers grow rich at the expense of investors. This groundbreaking book not only conceptualizes a new economic model for the industry but uses this model to test price competition between investment advisers. Its highly experienced authors track the growth of the industry over the past twenty-five years and present the arguments and evidence both for and against theories of adviser malfeasance, as well as the assertion that market forces fail to protect investors' returns from excessive fees. The volume briefly reviews the regulatory history of mutual fund fees and leading case decisions addressing excessive fees. It also reveals the extent to which the governance structure of mutual funds impacts fund performance. There is no greater text for those who seek to understand today's mutual fund industry, including investors, money managers, fund directors, securities lawyers, economists, and those concerned with regulatory policy toward mutual funds

Book excerpt: In early January 2015, in his home office in Mumbai, India, Sandeep Gupta, pondered if the investment strategy he had used for the previous ten years was the optimal strategy and whether he should modify it. That is, since 2005 Sandeep had been allocating his investible money saved out of his annual salary through systematic investment plans to four open-ended mutual funds, namely HDFC Top 200 Fund, Franklin India Bluechip Fund, SBI Magnum Equity Fund, and Reliance Growth Fund. After almost a decade of investing through mutual funds, Sandeep wondered whether his investment strategy had worked and whether these funds have outperformed relative to the benchmark indices. Sandeep knew that evaluating fund performance solely on the basis of average returns would not be meaningful as absolute returns needed to be adjusted for risk undertaken before they can be compared. With this quantitative analysis in mind, Sandeep decided to focus on the proposed computation of various fund performance measures such as the Sharpe ratio, Treynor ratio, Jensen's alpha, information ratio, M-square measure, and Sortino ratio. The case puts the students in a financial analyst role and illustrates the relevance and computation of various risk-adjusted measures of fund/portfolio performance for investors' rational decision-making over a period of time.

Book excerpt: Mutual fund performance is an unending area of interest both for academicians as well as fund managers for the simple reason as it is a product meant for retail investor. A set of performance measures like Sharpe ratio, Jensen's Alpha are widely used measures. But in today's volatile market environment investor's mind is inundated with one major question i.e. what is maximum downside risk, if investment is made in mutual funds. Performance measures that consider both upward and downwards volatility might not be very useful for investors. Rather performance measures that consider risk by taking into account only losses, such as Value-at-Risk (VaR), is more appropriate technique to evaluate the performance. In the present study, standard VaR (Value at Risk) has been used to analyze the performance of public and private sector mutual funds. The present study uses Historical simulation, Normal VaR and Modified VaR techniques for calculating value at risk.
