Book excerpt: Investment in Australian mining and resources stocks has the potential to deliver spectacular returns or to be financially disastrous. Considering its poor average returns over the last decade, this is not a good arena in which to apply the 1990s investment recipe of placing your (borrowed) funds on the hottest stocks and sitting back! However, selective investment in the area can pay handsomely. Allan Trench and Thomas Judge, authors of The Insider? Guide to Success on the Australian Sharemarket and The Insider? Guide to Success in Australian Business and Management, bring you the knowledge necessary to make informed (and hopefully lucrative) investment decisions in the resources sector. With a focus on metal mining and exploration companies, The Insider? Guide to Investing in Australian Mining and Resources Stocks is written in the authors?trademark witty and easy-to-understand style.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian Mining Industry is a major contributor to the national economy. The export revenues from the various metals and minerals mined from 'The Lucky Country' read like telephone numbers; make those international telephone numbers. Dubious investors may be concerned whether what has become a hot sector of the Australian sharemarket will continue to show growth in 2011. Or has all the future value of high commodity prices already been priced into resources company share prices? For some resources stocks, the answer is yes: The values of some companies in this author's opinion have become stretched. But for other resources stocks the answer is absolutely not: There are still spectacular share price gains around the corner for a number of resources stocks. 'A Sharebuyer's Guide to Investing in the Australian Mining Boom' will help you evaluate which stocks in the mining sector have the best chance of outperforming the market. Includes an A to Z (Aluminium to Zinc) of commodities and company profiles of 40 Emerging ASX-listed Resources Companies.

So investors can follow, say, Gold, and then refer to Trench's expert opinion on Gold in the short-term and review the gold-mining and producing companies listed in the ASX for investment opportunities. Over half of the 1,800 stocks listed in the ASX are in the mining and resources sector. Serious investors will be clambering to access the information in this new book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - In 2003, four mining shares rose over four times in price, with one gaining ten times.- In just the first two months of 2004, 26 mining shares increased more than 20%, with five shares doubling.- Merrill Lynch's World Mining Trust is the UK's best performing fund over the past three years, having risen by over 200 per cent. But is the mining boom about to end?Not according to this book, by Michael Coulson, Chairman of the Association of Mining Analysts. Coulson argues that, if anything, we are still in the early stages of prolonged strength in mining stocks and despite what some commentators are saying, the boom is far from over.FROM THE BACK COVERThe prospect of instant riches gives the mining sector an obvious glamour. And when the mining sector begins to run it can be an awesome sight and the excitement generated can be every bit as seductive and heady as that which enveloped markets during the internet boom. But due to the counter-cyclical nature of many mining stocks, they can also offer a valuable refuge when stock markets turn down. In this book, Michael Coulson gives a masterly overview of the sector, explains both the rewards and the pitfalls of investing in mining shares and argues convincingly that mining should once again form a core sector for all investors. The book is for anyone interested in mining, and particularly mining as an investment. Whilst it contains material which will be useful to even experienced followers of the sector, its main target is those who are interested in mining but perhaps not particularly familiar with the sector, and would like to know more. All the subjects are covered that are fundamental to acquiring sufficient knowledge about the miningsector to invest in it with confidence. While the mining s

Book excerpt: Until September 1969, Poseidon was a name known only to a handful of investors. Then, in the space of four months, the stock rocketed from 80 cents to $280 a share, and pushed the speculative share market sky-high. All of a sudden, thousands of ordinary Australians who had never seen a mine or even a stock exchange were gambling in the wildest stock market boom the nation has ever seen. Millions of dollars were won and lost in a matter of hours. Sadly, just about everyone lost in the end. So what happened? And why? In The Money Miners, Trevor Sykes writes of how and why mining shares rose and fell so dramatically, and traces the scandals and collapse of many companies - Poseidon, Tasminex, Queensland Mines, Minsec, Patrick Partners and others. Ultimately, this is a story of greed, a story of those who were more interested in mining money rather than minerals.

Book excerpt: Industry performance is a key component of the top-down approach to investment management. The recent boom in the stock prices of mining companies in Australia affords an opportunity to examine whether equity funds are able to capture industry outperformance. Funds with a higher exposure to the mining industry do not earn higher returns, yet they are able to attract increased flows from investors. The positive impact of mining exposure on fund flow is consistent with investors being attracted to 'hot' investment styles and misinterpreting industry allocation as fund skill.

Book excerpt: "As the mining investment boom fades, Australia risks falling into the stagnation that afflicts much of the rich world. This report examines what policymakes can do so that Australia remains a dynamic, growing economy. It focuses on private sector investment, a key to growth. Investment in Australia has been exceptionally strong. Since 2005, the capital stock per person has grown by a third. Even excluding mining, capital per person has grown by more than 15 per cent. By contrast, in both the US and Uk the capital stock per person grew by just 7 per cent. Strong investment has belped to increase output per person by 10 per cent between 2005 and 2015, compared to 6 per cent in the US and 4 per cent in the UK. But Australia is now experiencing its biggest ever five-year fall in mining investment, as a share of GDP. And non-mining business investment has fallen from 12 per cent to 9 per cent of GDP, lower than at any point in the 50 years from 1960 to 2010. It is important to keep this problem in perspective. Investment in the 2000a was buoyed by rapid growth and easy finance that masked longterm structural changes in the economy. With the shift to a services economy, and with lower capital goods prices, businesses can thrive with lower levels of investment. But about a third of the fall in nonmining investment is a result of the economy growing slowly, which discourages businesses from investing. What should the Australian govenernment do to encourage investment? There are no silver bullets - only tought choices. And we need to set realistic expectations that theses choices will only produce incremental increases in investment. The Turnbull Govenment proposes a cut in company tax. It would probably attract more foreign investment. But there are trade-offs. A cut would also reduce national income for years and would hit the budget. Committing to a tax cut before the budget is on a clear path to recovery risks reducing future living standards. Alternative company tax models like accelerated depreciatin or a cash flow tax can make investment more attractive, but would cos the budget even more in the earl years. An investment allowance would be cheaper, but may be difficult to administer. Calls for tax breaks for small business should be rejected. Other policies can encourage investment. Government deficits can expand expenditure and hence invesment. But they impose costs on futute taxpayers and can reduce flexibility in a crisis. The RBA should keep interest rates low; risjs to financial stability can be managed by tightening prudential standards. Governements, state and federal, should build more infrastructure, but only if they can build better infrstructure. And of course policy to support economic growth (by reducing tax distortions, boosting labour participation, encouraging competition, improving the efficieny of land use, and tightening regulatory frameworks) would also encourage private investment. Lower growth may well be the 'new normal', and investment is likely to remain below previous peaks. There is no reason to panic. But there is also no excuse for policy complacency. Australia should prudently encourage investment through this new reality."--Page 3.
