Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in the Invest in Africa Collection. I am having the privilege of starting with the book Invest in Rwanda - Visit Rwanda. The purpose of this Book Collection is the growth and development of countries in Africa, within a new vision, a new concept, where the historical aspects so evident in most books and texts on the Internet, no longer have priorities. As an author, I want to disclose to the world what each country offers in terms of investment opportunities, in a simple and objective way. When we come across countless information collected in books and even on the Internet, we see economic indices and numbers that convey important data, but often end up not motivating investors in general. Investments are very restricted to government initiatives and end up not reaching countless other potential small, medium and large investors, who most of the time take their capital to other continents.Rwanda is a country located in Central Africa, bordered on the north by Uganda, on the east by Tanzania, on the south by Burundi and on the west by the Democratic Republic of Congo. The total area of Rwanda is 26,338 km2, with an estimated population density of 445 people per km2. Size 26,338 Km2 | Population 12.3 Million (NISR 2019 Projection) | Temperature 21°-27° | Life expectancy 67 years | GDP per capita $787 | GDP growth per year +8 percent. Rwanda, under the beautiful management of Paul Kagame and his team, has been proving that a country's potential is not measured by its territorial extension, much less by its mineral wealth, oil, etc. It is measured by the grandeur of its people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global credit crisis of 2008 2009 was the most serious shock to the world economy in fully 80 years. It was for the world as a whole what the Asian crisis of 1997 1998 was for emerging markets: a profoundly alarming wake-up call. By laying bare the fragility of global markets, it raised troubling questions about the operation of our deeply integrated world economy. It cast doubt on the efficacy of the dominant mode of light-touch financial regulation and more generally on the efficacy of the prevailing commitment to economic and financial liberalization. It challenged the managerial capacity of inherited institutions of global governance. And it augured a changing of the guard, pointing to the possibility that the economies that had been the leaders in the "global growth stakes" in the past might no longer be the leaders in the future. What the crisis means for reform, however, is still unclear. This book brings together leading scholars and policy analysts to describe and weigh the options. Successive chapters assess options for the global financial system, the global trading system, the international monetary system, and the Group of 20 and global governance. A final set of chapters contemplates the policy challenges for emerging markets and the advanced economies in the wake of the financial crisis.

This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates how trade flows are being affected by new discriminatory measures implemented during the global financial crisis. We match data on behind-the-border measures (e.g., bailouts and subsidies) and border measures implemented through April 2010 to monthly HS 4-digit bilateral trade data. Our estimation strategy relies on a first-differenced gravity equation and time-varying fixed effects to disentangle the impact of new discriminatory measures. Trade in exporter-importer pairs subject to new measures decreased by 5 to 8 percent relative to trade in the same product among pairs not subject to new measures. These product-level results imply global trade declines at the aggregate level of about 0.2 percent, or $30-35 billion a year. These aggregate figures would be higher, if one third of measures had not been excluded due to incomplete data. The paper then goes on to dissect protectionism’s trade impact by disaggregating measures by type, advanced/developing countries, regions, sectors, and time. Behind-the-border measures are found to have been more harmful than border measures at the product level. Among border measures, impacts tend to be higher for less transparent measures. Advanced countries are found to be responsible for 2/3 of the trade decline due to crisis protectionism, but their exports also absorbed 2/3 of this decline. When breaking down measures in a time dimension, we find that those taken in the first nine months after the Lehman collapse were most harmful and likely continue to constitute a drag on trade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of economic liberalism in the latter stages of the 20th century coincided with a fundamental transformation of international economic governance, especially through the law of the World Trade Organization. In this book, Andrew Lang provides a new account of this transformation, and considers its enduring implications for international law. Against the commonly-held idea that 'neoliberal' policy prescriptions were encoded into WTO law, Lang argues that the last decades of the 20th century saw a reinvention of the international trade regime, and a reconstitution of its internal structures of knowledge. In addition, the book explores the way that resistance to economic liberalism was expressed and articulated over the same period in other areas of international law, most prominently international human rights law. It considers the promise and limitations of this form of 'inter-regime' contestation, arguing that measures to ensure greater collaboration and cooperation between regimes may fail in their objectives if they are not accompanied by a simultaneous destabilization of each regime's structures of knowledge and characteristic features. With that in mind, the book contributes to a full and productive contestation of the nature and purpose of global economic governance.

Book excerpt: Examining the often-expressed concerns about trade liberalization, the authors assess both the facts and common perceptions underlying the issues. Research shows that some popular concerns about trade are factually based, but others are less well supported or arise from apparent misunderstandings of the way international markets work. This form of presentation both highlights the current divergence of views and demonstrates the extent to which either new research or better public dissemination of existing research might lead toward greater consensus. The authors examine seven often-expressed concerns about trade liberalization to assess both the facts and common perceptions underlying the issues. • Trade's effect on manufacturing jobs • Trade's effect on wage and income inequality • Trade deficits • U.S. economic exposure to foreign-market instability • The threat to sovereignty • Trade's effect on the environment • Health and safety After briefly summarizing the concerns raised in each area, the authors review a large body of recent economic and legal literature. Plain statements by advocates of a particular position on an issue appear alongside discussion of more formal economic or legal analysis of the same issue. This form of presentation both highlights the current divergence of views and demonstrates the extent to which either new research or better public dissemination of existing research might lead toward greater consensus.

In this collection of essays, he reviews theories and practices of state intervention as they have developed over two centuries of modern capitalism. He develops an institutionalist approach to the role of the state in economic change, and examines the issues involved in particular settings including industrial policy, trade policy, intellectual property rights, regulation, and strategies towards transnational corporations. He mounts a sophisticated theoretical and historical case for the continuing essential and constructive roles which the state can and must play in economic development.
