Book excerpt: It summarizes the research that underpins the Policy Blueprint on policy practices, policy thinking, public values, and the outcomes achieved by children in Canada and comparable countries. [...] We contend that all citizens should care about the well-being of children, for two reasons: First, children are "nested" in multiple environments: the child within the family, the family within the larger community of neighbour- hoods and workplaces, the commu- nity as defined by different geo- graphic and political boundaries, the public institutions (such as schools) that provide community infra. [...] • Effective parenting can be sup- ported through improved paid and unpaid parental leaves, flex- ible employment hours and schedules, improved access to health and developmental pro- grams as well as community re- source centres, and enhanced availability of developmental child care and preschool care for both employed and stay-at-home parents. [...] • Foster and oversee the development of a more consistent network of services to meet the needs of children and families for child care, parenting supports, health services and developmental aids. [...] Canada would then be on its way to achieving the highest of ratings as a place for chil- dren to grow and prosper, supporting the next generation of people who will make this country a desirable place to live and work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often assumed that think tanks carry enormous weight with lawmakers. In Do Think Tanks Matter? Donald Abelson argues that the basic question of how think tanks have evolved and under what conditions they can and do have an effect is consistently ignored. Think tank directors often credit their institutes with influencing major policy debates and government legislation and many journalists and scholars believe the explosion of think tanks in the latter part of the twentieth century indicates their growing importance in the policy-making process. Abelson goes beyond assumptions, identifying the influence and relevance of public policy institutes in today's political arena in the United States, where they've become an integral feature of the political landscape, and in Canada, where, despite recent growth in numbers, they enjoy less prominence than their US counterparts. By focusing on the policy cycle, issue articulation, policy formation, and implementation, Abelson argues that individual think tanks have sometimes played an important role in shaping the political dialogue and the policy preferences and choices of decision-makers but often in different ways and at different stages of the policy cycle. This revised and updated edition of the book includes up-to-date data (2000-08) on the growing visibility and policy relevance of think tanks in Canada and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do Think Tanks Matter? evaluates the influence and relevance of public policy institutes in today's political arena. Many journalists and scholars believe the explosion of think tanks in the latter part of the twentieth century indicates their growing importance in the policy-making process. This perception has been reinforced by directors of think tanks, who often credit their institutes with influencing major policy debates and government legislation. Yet the basic question of how and in what way they influence public policy has, Donald Abelson contends, frequently been ignored. Abelson studies the experiences of think tanks in the United States, where they have become an integral feature of the political landscape, and in Canada, where their numbers have grown considerably in recent years but where, compared to their U.S. counterparts, they enjoy less prominence in policy-making. By focusing on the policy cycle, issue articulation (that is, getting issues on the political agenda) and policy formation and implementation (actually affecting the outcome of policies already on the political agenda), he argues that think tanks have sometimes played an important role in shaping the political dialogue and the policy preferences and choices of decision-makers, but often in different ways and at different stages of the policy cycle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early childhood on, we are conditioned to try to earn as much money as possible. Only a very few people make it to the point of becoming financial independent. In this rat race of getting more and more things, do we still realize what the real purpose of life could be? We have entered a time of great uncertainty. Many nations are close to insolvency. Currencies lose value over night. Nations who embraced socialism have no money to support their illusion. People like you and me will ask the question: I wonder why I am always broke? Where are you today? Are you one of the few who have been preserved from being broke? When will you lose or have to give up your wealth? Daniel has studied the Word of GOD. He has seen a lot of things in this fallen world which do not add up and which do display corruption to the highest degree. Does GOD have a plan? Does the Bible teach a prosperity Gospel? More than ever before are believers and non-believers confused about the teaching of the Bible about wealth. Does the Bible really predict an economical collapse of unmeasureable proportions? Find out what Daniel discovered where true wealth can be found. Are you prepared for the things that will strike this earth? Where is your faith?

Book excerpt: This book brings together insights from a range of disciplines, including law, sociology, criminology and history, to identify and explain the complex and inter-related factors which help or hinder the state to 'invest' in children and young people. The first part of the book examines the 'intangibles' - the ideologies, social constructions and moral precepts - which obstruct or encourage the passage and full implementation of legislation, policy and practice which hopes to improve the lives and prospects of children and young people. Notions of family and parental responsibility, assumptions about what children and young people 'are' and the extent to which they should be held accountable, and ideas around state investment against future risks are the key factors considered. The second part of the book focuses on the difficulties in practice of implementing policies aimed at investing in children's lives and futures. It reviews the role of science in the identification of risk factors related to poor outcomes for children and in the selection of target groups or areas for risk-based intervention to provide (early) support and preventative programmes for children and their families. It also assesses whether and how law does or could help to 'deliver' an appropriate investment of time and money in children, with a focus on the existence and effectiveness of a rights-based approach. The final chapters examine the results of research so far undertaken done on selected programmes in the Every Child Matters, social inclusion and Youth Justice Board policy agendas and they indentify promising developments. However, they also draw attention to the alternative agendas around children and young people which are competing for government money and the public's support and warn that there are dangers in a child-focused policy whose justification relies so heavily on future cost savings stemming from the production of healthier, more employable and law-abiding adults.

Book excerpt: The use of trusts, both revocable and irrevocable, is growing, and it is increasingly important for the trustee to prudently invest the trust's assets. The Madoff scandal and legislative developments have highlighted the importance of that duty. Written with the individual trustee in mind - lawyers, individuals acting as trustees, financial planners, and accountants - this book examines the law of diversification, investment directions, determining breach and damages, and provides guidelines for drafting an investment plan.
