This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research evaluates whether the new model of investment agreement developed by Brazil (CFIA) is a mechanism for enhancing protection and respect for social and economic rights. The research starts by exploring the origins of investment treaties, their development and main characteristics. It examines why investment treaties and socio-economic rights are related, by mapping cases in which investment treaties have already impaired the protection of such rights. The research then analyzes how these two issues shall be jointly handled. It considers international organizations? initiatives to regulate business and human rights and investment treaties? frameworks that foster sustainable development, as well as new investment agreements? models developed by different countries, and then suggests criteria for evaluating whether an investment treaty is adequate from the socio-economic rights standpoint. Finally, this research investigates the CFIA model, brings a brief historical overview, evaluates CFIAs? wording, and examines how some CFIAs? institutional mechanisms consider corporate social responsibility issues. In conclusion, this research asserts that the CFIA model can be a mechanism for enhancing protection and respect for socio-economic rights, but some concerns (particularly related to safeguarding States? regulatory space and providing for stronger obligations to investors and States to protect human rights) need to be addressed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Syria and Iraq to Ukraine, from AfPak to Libya, from Iran to Russia, and from the Persian Gulf to China, foreign correspondent Pepe Escobar, author of The Roving Eye column for Asia Times/Hong Kong, crisscrosses what the Pentagon calls the "arc of instability." As Escobar tells it in the introduction, "the columns selected for this volume follow the period 2009-2014 - the Obama years so far. A continuum with previous volumes published by Nimble Books does apply. Globalistan, from 2007, was an extended reportage/warped travel book across the Bush years, where I argued the world was being plunged into Liquid War - alluding to energy flows but also to the liquid modernity character of post-modern war. Red Zone Blues, also from 2007, was a vignette - an extended reportage centering on the Baghdad surge. And Obama does Globalistan, from 2009, examined how the hyperpower could embark on a "change we can believe in". The outcome, as these columns arguably reflect, is Empire of Chaos - where a plutocracy progressively projects its own internal disintegration upon the whole world.""You will find some key overlapping nations/themes/expressions/acronyms in these columns; Iran, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia, China, Russia, Ukraine, Pipelineistan, BRICS, EU, NATO, GCC, the Global South, GWOT (the global war on terror), The New Great Game, Full Spectrum Dominance. You will also find a progressive drift towards not conventional war, but above all economic war - manifestations of Liquid War.""Incrementally, I have been arguing that Washington's number one objective now is to prevent a full economic integration of Eurasia that would leave the U.S. as a non-hegemon, or worse still, an outsider. Thus the three-pronged strategy of "pivoting to Asia" (containment of China); Ukraine (containment of Russia); and beefing up NATO (subjugation of Europe, and NATO as Global Robocop)."Book the ultimate trip to the Empire of Chaos, and see how the U.S. - and the West - are tackling the emergence of a multipolar world. Pepe Escobar is an independent geopolitical analyst. He writes for RT, Sputnik, TomDispatch, Strategic Culture Foundation, and is a frequent contributor to websites and radio and TV shows ranging from the US to East Asia. He is the former roving correspondent for Asia Times Online, where he also wrote the column The Roving Eye from 2000 to 2014. Born in Brazil, he's been a foreign correspondent since 1985, and has lived in London, Paris, Milan, Los Angeles, Washington, Bangkok and Hong Kong. He is the author of "Globalistan" (2007), "Red Zone Blues" (2007), "Obama does Globalistan" (2009) and "Empire of Chaos" (2014), all published by Nimble Books. It is based on a research project on the energy sector of both the countries. It discusses the agreements in the energy sector between the two countries and the renewable energy policies developed in four decades. A scientific and technological mapping, a brief study of competitiveness and a primary research were carried out in order to find out the weaknesses and the opportunities for cooperation in renewable energies. This Publication will undoubtedly provoke the reader to reflect on the importance of cooperation given the growing protectionism not only in terms of energy security, but also in terms of investments in new technologies considering energy transition scenario. For Brazil and India, intensifying the dialogue is more than a strategy of visibility and the search for greater space in worldwide geopolitics.

This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The innovation systems (IS) approach emerged as a theoretical framework in the industrialized world in the mid-1990s to explain innovation and growth in the developed world. This Handbook is the first attempt to adapt the IS approach to developing countries from a theoretical and empirical viewpoint. The Handbook brings eminent scholars in economics, innovation and development studies together with promising young researchers to review the literature and push theoretical boundaries. They critically review the IS approach and its adequacy for developing countries, discuss the relationship between IS and development, and address the question of how it should be adapted to the realities of developing nations. Spanning national, sectoral and regional innovation systems across Asia, Latin America and Africa, and written by the world s leading scholars within the field, this comprehensive Handbook will strongly appeal to academics, researchers and students with an interest in innovation and technology in developing countries.

But emerging economies have begun to accelerate their own development programmes, and attempts to bring them into existing aid models have been met with caution and reservation. This expert, topical volume explores the development policies of Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa, analysing how South-South cooperation has evolved and where it differs from traditional development cooperation. This vital new collection brings together first-hand experience from these countries to provide a forward-looking analysis of the current global architecture of development cooperation and of the possible convergence of traditional and emerging development actors.
