Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geodesy is the science of accurately measuring and understanding three fundamental properties of Earth: its geometric shape, its orientation in space, and its gravity field, as well as the changes of these properties with time. Over the past half century, the United States, in cooperation with international partners, has led the development of geodetic techniques and instrumentation. Geodetic observing systems provide a significant benefit to society in a wide array of military, research, civil, and commercial areas, including sea level change monitoring, autonomous navigation, tighter low flying routes for strategic aircraft, precision agriculture, civil surveying, earthquake monitoring, forest structural mapping and biomass estimation, and improved floodplain mapping. Recognizing the growing reliance of a wide range of scientific and societal endeavors on infrastructure for precise geodesy, and recognizing geodetic infrastructure as a shared national resource, this book provides an independent assessment of the benefits provided by geodetic observations and networks, as well as a plan for the future development and support of the infrastructure needed to meet the demand for increasingly greater precision. Precise Geodetic Infrastructure makes a series of focused recommendations for upgrading and improving specific elements of the infrastructure, for enhancing the role of the United States in international geodetic services, for evaluating the requirements for a geodetic workforce for the coming decades, and for providing national coordination and advocacy for the various agencies and organizations that contribute to the geodetic infrastructure.

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to both administrative and technical personnel in departments of transportation (DOTs), especially in the areas of surveying, mapping, transportation planning, environmental impact assessment, design, construction control, maintenance, operations, vehicle location, and other functions that require accurate location data. This report will be useful for intermodal transportation analyses and for measurement and positioning data for inventories and geographic information systems (GIS). It can also be useful to suppliers and developers of Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment. This report of the Transportation Research Board presents a description of GPS, the major components, basic geodesy principles, how GPS functions, and how it can be applicable to the data and analysis requirements of transportation agencies. The anticipated cost effectiveness of GPS in terms of personnel, equipment, and time as related to the improved accuracies to be derived from GPS applications are described. Current and more advanced applications of GPS by DOTs to different transportation modes are presented. The report also includes a glossary of terms and a listing of GPS information sources.

This development is due to a large extent to the versatility of applications provided by the radio interferometric technique called Global Positioning System or GPS. Appropriately, Symposium 102: Global Positioning System: An Overview was held at the 125th Anniversary Meeting of the International Association of Geodesy in August, 1989. A broad review of GPS geodesy, achievements to date and the prospects for future study and application was presented. Papers included in this volume are grouped as follows: - Static and Geodynamic Positioning; - Orbit Determination Optimization and Design Dynamic; - Kinematic GPS/INS Radio Tracking Systems A useful reference for any researcher or student of space geodesy.

Book excerpt: These proceedings include most of the papers presented at the lAG Sympo sium GPS Trends in Precise Terrestrial, Airborne, and Spacebome Appli cations held in July 1995 during the XXI-th IUGG General Assembly in Boulder, Colorado. The symposium was jointly organized by the lAG and the International Union of Surveys and Mapping (IUSM). The symposium was divided into four sessions, namely (1) The International GPS Service for Geodynamics (IGS) and other Permanent Networks, (2) Spaceborne Applications of the GPS, (3) Kinematic Applications of the GPS, and (4) The GPS and its Relations to Geophysics. The main purpose was to give an overview of the state of the art in 1995 of the applications of the GPS to geodynamics, geodesy, surveying, and navi gation. The call for papers generated a flood of originally more than 70 abstracts; quite a few could be redirected to other symposia, but still 56 papers found their way into these proceedings. We thus conclude that the volume gives a rather complete overview of GPS Trends in Precise Terrestrial, Airborne, and Spacebome Applications in the year 1995.

Book excerpt: MIT explored and extended the capabilities of the new technique of geodesy by radio interferometry using signals from the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites. Accuracy in the determination of long relative-position, or 'baseline', vectors between fixed points on the earth was improved by the use of doubly differenced, dual frequency (LI and L2 band). Carrier phase observations, and by determining the orbits of the satellites from observations at widely spaced sites whose relative positions were well known a priori from quasar observations. Accuracy of about 1 part in 10 million of the length of a long baseline, and 1 millimeter for a short baseline, was achieved. Keywords: Geodetic survey; Geodetic control; VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry); Satellite geodesy; Satellite tracking; Satellite orbits; Orbit determination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed discussions are made of principles and methods associated with orbital determinations for low orbit spacecraft making use of GPS systems. Analysis is done of problems which should be considered with regard to low orbit spacecraft during selection of satellites. In conjunction with this, satellite selection tests are carried out on the basis of navigation satellite as well as user models. Discussions are made of making use of least square methods to make calculations to determine orbits. Detailed analysis is done of Kalman filter algorithms. With a view to low orbit spacecraft, a nine state Kalman wave filter model is put forward. In conjunction with this, simulation analog calculations are carried out on this foundation. Besides this, on the basis of special user requirements with regard to electric power source energies and reliability, one type of relatively practical orbit determination method is put forward. Simulation results clearly show that the method put forward satisfies user requirements in terms of accuracy and is appropriate for actual engineering applications.

Book excerpt: While navigation systems for the determination of the orbit of the Global Position System (GPS) have proven to be very effective, the current issues involve lowering the error in the GPS satellite ephemerides below their current level. In this document, the results of an orbit determination covariance assessment are provided. The analysis is intended to be the baseline orbit determination study comparing the benefits of adding laser ranging measurements from various numbers of ground stations. Results are shown for two starting longitude assumptions of the satellite location and for nine initial covariance cases for the GPS satellite state vector. Welch, Bryan W. Book excerpt: The Global Positioning System (GPS) has revolutionized the measurement of position, velocity, and time. It has rapidly evolved into a worldwide utility with more than a billion receiver sets currently in use that provide enormous benefits to humanity: improved safety of life, increased productivity, and wide-spread convenience. Global Navigation Satellite Systems summarizes the joint workshop on Global Navigation Satellite Systems held jointly by the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Engineering on May 24-25, 2011 at Hongqiao Guest Hotel in Shanghai, China. "We have one world, and only one set of global resources. It is important to work together on satellite navigation. Competing and cooperation is like Yin and Yang. They need to be balanced," stated Dr. Charles M. Vest, President of the National Academy of Engineering, in the workshop's opening remarks. Global Navigation Satellite Systems covers the objectives of the workshop, which explore issues of enhanced interoperability and interchangeability for all civil users aimed to consider collaborative efforts for countering the global threat of inadvertent or illegal interference to GNSS signals, promotes new applications for GNSS, emphasizing productivity, safety, and environmental protection. The workshop featured presentations chosen based on the following criteria: they must have relevant engineering/technical content or usefulness; be of mutual interest; offer the opportunity for enhancing GNSS availability, accuracy, integrity, and/or continuity; and offer the possibility of recommendations for further actions and discussions. Global Navigation Satellite Systems is an essential report for engineers, workshop attendees, policy makers, educators, and relevant government agencies.
