Designed for scientists and students in the fields of archaeology, art conservation, microscopy, forensics, chemistry, and optics, the book discusses techniques for examining the microscopic amounts of complex, aged components in objects such as paintings, sculptures, and archaeological fragments. Chapters include the history of infrared spectroscopy, the basic parameters of infrared absorption theory, IR instrumentation, analysis methods, sample collection and preparation, and spectra interpretation. The authors cite several case studies, such as examinations of Chumash Indian paints and the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Institute’s Tools for Conservation series provides practical scientific procedures and methodologies for the practice of conservation. The series is specifically directed to conservation scientists, conservators, and technical experts in related fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the application of IR spectroscopy in mineralogical investigations, as well as modern trends in the IR spectroscopy of minerals. It includes the most important methodological aspects; characteristic IR bands of different chemical groups and coordination polyhedra; application of IR spectroscopy to the investigation of the crystal chemistry of amphiboles, phyllosilicates, tourmalines etc.; neutral molecules entrapped by microporous minerals; and analysis of hydrogen in nominally anhydrous minerals. About 1600 IR spectra (illustrations as well as a list of wavenumbers) of minerals and some related compounds are accompanied by detailed descriptions of the standard samples used. Each spectrum provides information about the occurrence, appearance, associated minerals, its empirical formula, and unit-cell parameters. The book also provides insights into sample preparation and/or spectrum registration methods. It includes IR spectra of 1020 minerals that were not covered in the book “Infrared spectra of mineral species: Extended library” published in 2014 and written by one of the authors. On average, each page provides information on two minerals/compounds. Subsections correspond to different classes of compounds (silicates, phosphates, arsenates, oxides etc.). About 290 new spectra have been obtained, and the remaining 1310 spectra are taken from most reliable literature sources (published over the last 60 years) and are redrawn in a unified style.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Investigations of Infra-Red Spectra: Part I. Infra-Red Absorption Spectra; Part II. Infra-Red Emission Spectra The free vibration periods Of molecular aggregations may be studied by means Of their emission or absorption spectra. Emission generally implies a high temperature and uncertainty Of the composition Of the radiator, due to dissociation; hence it is more advantageous to study a substance at a low temperature by means Of its absorption spectrum, since we then have a more definite knowledge Of its composition. This is especially true Of the highly complex compounds which are so abun dant in organic chemistry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Since Herschel discovered light in the near-infrared region as early as 1800, the NIR region of the electromagnetic spectrum, once regarded as having little potential for analytical work, has now become one of the most promising techniques for molecular spectroscopy in several analytical fields. Over the last three decades, the development of new applications of infrared spectroscopy has been associated with increased power of computers and progress in chemometrics. This book introduces and presents several novel applications of NIR spectroscopy in biology, medicine, food science, the pharmaceutical sciences, polymers and minerals, for the first time in a single book. It is written by an international panel of scientists with a vast expertise in the field of infrared spectroscopy, providing unique views and perspectives on both practical and theoretical applications. This book should serve as a reference source for undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists and researchers in the field of infrared spectroscopy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is concerned with systematization of the infrared spectra of an important natural polymer, cellulose, and its derivatives. The infrared spectra of the main classes of cellulose derivatives are de scribed and interpreted and those of such model compounds as mono-, di-, and trisaccharides are considered. Considerable attention is given to prob lems of technique in obtaining infrared spectra of fibrous cellulose materials, and to the analytical possibilities of infrared spectroscopy in studies of the properties of cellulose and its derivatives. The book will be of use to scientific and plant workers interested in the study and treatment of cellulose, compounds related to cellulose (carbo hydrates and polycarbohydrates), and other polymers. v INTRODUCTION Spectroscopy has nowadays acquired great scientific and practical im portance. Its possibilities are based on the specificity of the emission and ab sorption spectra of all types of material, from elements to complex natural products. Most widely used are the methods of emission spectral analysis (analysis of the emission spectrum from an incandescent body). The rapidity and availability of these methods, together with their high sensitivity and selectivity, has made them indispensable in the practice of plant and scien tific laboratories for establishing the presence of specific elements in a sub stance under investigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectral Methods in Transition Metal Complexes provides a conceptual understanding on how to interpret the optical UV-vis, vibrational EPR, and NMR spectroscopy of transition metal complexes. Metal complexes have broad applications across chemistry in the areas of drug discovery, such as anticancer drugs, sensors, special materials for specific requirements, and catalysis, so a thorough knowledge in preparation and characterization of metal complexes, while niche, is critical. Accessible to both the seasoned researcher and the graduate student alike, this book provides readers with a single source of content that addresses spectral methods in transition metal complexes. Provides readers with a single reference on metal complexes and coordination compounds Contains more than 100 figures, tables, and illustrations to aid in the retention of key concepts Authored by a scientist with nearly 40 years of experience in research and instruction
