Book excerpt: The object of the investigation was to study the behaviour of two asphalts in tension. These two asphalts were of the same penetration grade and used on two different sections of Highway 57A of the Province of Alberta. Although the pavement placement conditions were almost identical, the frequency of transverse cracking was very different. Since tensile stresses induced in the asphalt pavement are resisted or relieved by the asphalt binder, the tensile stress-strain properties of the asphalts recovered from the pavements were investigated. The effect of the rate of strain, film thickness and temperatures on the asphalt specimens were studied. Simple devices for recording the load-deformation characteristic of asphalt films were designed and fabricated. The tests indicated that the stress-strain characteristics of the two asphalts were not the same. Asphalt used in the cracked section developed more stress for the same amount of strain than the asphalt used in the uncracked section at all temperatures. The stiffness modulus of the material from the cracked section was greater than that of the latter at all temperatures and rates of strain. It is therefore concluded that asphalts having higher stiffness modulii are more likely to exhibit cracking in a pavement. The major recommendations are to investigate the tensile strength properties of more asphalt binders as well as asphalt mixtures of cracked and uncracked areas.

Book excerpt: A study on uses of additives for improving asphaltic concrete for hydraulic construction showed that fine asbestos fibers (waste screenings) can be used advantageously. The increased compressive and tensile strength, stability, and erosion resistance properties gained with the fibers should provide a highly durable material capable of withstanding the major stresses that develop during service. Of the two rubberized asphalts tested, GRS and neoprene, it was indicated that the neoprene asphalt produced the better asphaltic concrete, particularly on the basis of stability and erosion resistance. Compared to the control, asbestos fibers, and rubberized asphalt mixes, the epoxy-asphalt concrete excelled in all physical properties determinations with the exception that flexibility was less than the rubberized asphalt mixes, and erosion resistance was comparable to the asbestos fiber mixes. The epoxy-asphalt concrete appears to be a very strong and tough material for hydraulic construction application; however, more data are required relative to its long-term weatherability. The relatively high cost of epoxy-asphalt approximately five times that of normal hot-mix, would restrict its use to special applications.

Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report 747: Guide for Conducting Forensic Investigations of Highway Pavements explores a process for conducting forensic investigations of pavements that is designed to help understand the reasons behind premature failures or exceptionally good performance. The process also allows for the collection of data for use in developing or calibrating performance-prediction models. The report includes example forms and checklists for use during the conduct of an investigation. These forms can be modified to suit the particular requirements and procedures for the agency. The example forms are included with the print version of the report in CD-ROM format." --Publisher description.

Book excerpt: This project reviewed existing laboratory methods for accurately describing the constitutive behavior of the mixes used in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Indirect tensile (IDT) strength, resilient modulus, static creep in the IDT and uniaxial modes, flexural beam fatigue, and dynamic modulus tests were conducted on two typical mixes used in Virginia: SM-9.5A (surface mix) and BM-25.0 (base mix). The tests conducted produced a wealth of data on typical values for the properties of the two mixes studied over a wide range of temperatures and loading frequencies. The results suggest that the IDT strength test is an effective test to characterize the tensile strength of hot-mix asphalt (HMA), especially for thermal cracking evaluation. The resilient modulus test and the static creep test in the IDT setup are practical and simple to perform, but the analysis of the measurements is complicated, and the variability of the results is high. The compressive uniaxial dynamic modulus and the uniaxial static creep tests were found to be simple to conduct and to analyze because of the homogeneous state of stress in the specimen during testing. The flexural fatigue test was time consuming, but the test produces valuable information about the fatigue properties of hot-mix asphalt. The investigation also found good correlations among the IDT strength, resilient modulus, and dynamic modulus results. A variety of tests is recommended for characterizing the mechanistic-empirical pavement analysis and design. These tests would provide the properties needed to characterize the asphalt layers for the pavement analysis and design. The recommended tests are as follows: IDT strength for characterizing HMA susceptibility to thermal cracking, dynamic modulus for characterization of the constitutive behavior of the HMA, uniaxial creep for characterizing permanent deformation characteristics, and flexural fatigue tests to characterize fatigue properties. Materials characterization testing can be a valuable tool in pavement design. The use of mechanistic-empirical modeling can be used to predict the performance of a pavement. With this type of testing and modeling, the materials used in pavements will be of better quality and more resistant to environmental and structural deterioration. A more durable pavement will aid in reducing the frequency and costs associated with maintenance.

Book excerpt: This book forms the Proceedings of an International RILEM Symposium, the fourth in the series, on Testing of Bituminous Mixes in Budapest, Hungary, October 1990. The aim of the Symposium is to promote tests for the characterization, design and quality control of bituminous mixes which combine the best features of traditional and modern approaches. Among the topics covered are specimen preparation, tests with unique loading (Marshall test, uniaxial tension and creep tests etc), which are used for mix design or control of mechanical properties, and tests with repeated loading, which give information on fatigue, permanent deformation and moduli, especially for mix design.
