Book excerpt: This report documents the field evaluation phase of the joint effort research program conducted by Crafco, Incorporated, and the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. The project was funded under the auspices of the FY 89 Construction Productivity Advancement Research (CPAR) Program. The objectives of the research effort were to (a) develop specification limits for a hot-applied, jet-fuel-resistant (JFR) sealant with improved performance characteristics as compared to current Federal Specification (FS) SS-S-1614A type materials, (b) develop specification limits for a hot-applied, non-jet- fuel-resistant (non-JFR) sealant with improved low temperature performance characteristics as compared to current FS SS-S-1401C type materials, (c) develop specification limits for a primer system that will minimize the bubbling tendencies associated with hot-applied sealants and improve adhesion characteristics to portland cement concrete (PCC), and (d) develop field data to determine performance characteristics of flush fill sealant application geometry versus 1/8 to 1/4 in. recess application techniques. The objectives were expanded to include field comparisons of the laboratory developed JFR and non- JFR sealants versus commercially available sealant materials and to verify that the developed primer system minimized bubbling tendencies of hot-applied sealants. Book excerpt: In July 1986, the Arizona Transportation Research Center (ATRC) coordinated the installation of a joint sealant test site near Flagstaff, between mile posts 331.5 and 332.2, on the southbound lanes of Interstate 17. The original project was constructed in 1974, with 8 in. (20 cm) of portland cement concrete pavement (PCCP) over 6 in. (15 cm) of cement treated base (CTB). The test site consisted of 200 transverse joints sawed 2 in. (5 cm) deep, skewed 1:6, and spaced at a repeating sequence of 17, 15, 13, and 15 ft (5.2, 4.6, 4.0, and 4.6 m). The objective of the project was to evaluate the performance of five joint sealants: Dow Corning 888, Superseal 888, Allied Koch 9005, Crafco Roadsaver 231, and W.R. Meadows Sof-Seal. The highway sections abutting this test site were also rehabilitated and their pavement joints were sealed with Superseal 444 which, at that time, was a specified sealant in the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) standards. Field evaluations of the joint sealants were performed at nine months, one year, 1.5 years, 3 years, and 8 years after construction. The evaluations were based on: (i) sealant flexibility, (ii) length of joint with missing sealant, (iii) adhesive and cohesive failure of sealant, (iv) joint width and sealant depth, (v) joint spalling, (vi) sealant recess, (vii) Falling Weight Deflectometer testing, and (viii) slab faulting. Generally, it appeared that after about eight years of service all five sealants had exhibited comparable performance level. Clearly, all test sealants performed better than Superseal 444 which was an ADOT specified joint sealant when the test site was installed in 1986.

Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to evaluate the field performance of five different types of pavement joint sealant materials at five different airports located in varying climatic regions. Each of the sealant materials was installed at all five airport. The same contractor was used to install the sealants at each of the five airports and the same lot number of the various sealants was installed at each airport. The sealants were stored in a temperature controlled warehouse until they were needed at the job site and 100 percent inspection was provided at each airport. These controls helped to minimize any variations in the service life of the sealants that were not material related. Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy were investigated as potential laboratory analysis techniques for joint sealants. The results of the field evaluations indicate the conformance of a sealant material to an appropriate material specification does not automatically signify satisfactory field performance; different types of sealants do perform differently based upon climatic exposure; and no revisions are necessary to procedures listed in the FAA Item P.605 for joint sealing projects. The research delineated the fact that material characterization procedures are needed for pavement joint sealants. These types of procedures could be used in material specifications that would be more indicative of sealant performance.

Book excerpt: Due to the nature of construction, it is common for longitudinal joints in asphalt pavements to have lower densities and higher permeabilities than the main portions of the pavement lanes. To address this concern, many states employ joint sealant techniques such as fog seals or void reducing asphalt membranes (VRAM). Qualitative evidence in Indiana appears to indicate that longitudinal joint lives have been improved by the use of joint sealers and adhesives, but the specific materials and application rates used to treat longitudinal joints has not been quantitatively investigated. This research aims to specifically investigate the fog seal materials and application rates specified for use on longitudinal joints in Indiana and to compare the performance of fog seal and VRAM treatments in order to provide guidelines for future joint sealant treatments. These objectives were accomplished by employing laboratory testing of both laboratory prepared specimens and field samples.The research performed on the laboratory specimens found the application of fog seals can improve the performance of the longitudinal joints with respect to permeability. While the permeability was affected by the presence of a fog seal treatment, the benefits were irrespective of the specific fog seal material. The results also indicate that the fog seal should be reapplied at 5-7 year intervals.The data from the field samples indicated that the VRAM samples had on average higher air void contents than did the SS-1h fog seal samples. Additionally, the VRAM samples had permeability coefficients that were statistically higher than the SS-1h fog seal samples. These differences may be attributable to the lack of VRAM migration up into the asphalt surface mixture. While the SS-1h fog seal treatment appears to have better performance than the VRAM, the effectiveness of the treatments over time is not known.
