Book excerpt: This thesis focusses on transport and composition of boreal fire plumes, evolution of trace gases in the Arctic, multi-year comparisons of ground-based and satellite-borne instruments, and depletion of Arctic ozone. Two similar Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) instruments were utilized: (1) the ground-based and balloon-borne Portable Atmospheric Research Interferometric Spectrometer for the InfraRed (PARIS-IR) and (2) the space-borne Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) FTS. Additional datasets, from other satellite and ground-based instruments, as well as Chemical Transport Models (CTMs) complemented the analysis. Transport and composition of boreal fire plumes were analysed with PARIS-IR measurements taken in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This study analysed the retrievals of different FTSs and investigated transport and composition of a smoke plume utilizing various models. The CO retrievals of three different FTSs (PARIS-IR, DA8, and IASI) were consistent and detected a smoke plume between 19 and 21 July 2011. These measurements were similar to the concentrations computed by GEOS-Chem (~3% for CO and ~8% for C2H6). Multi-year comparisons (2006-2013) of ground-based and satellite-borne FTSs near Eureka, Nunavut were carried out utilizing measurements from PARIS-IR, the Bruker 125HR and ACEFTS. The mean and interannual differences between the datasets were investigated for eight species (ozone, HCl, HNO3, HF, CH4, N2O, CO, and C2H6) and good agreement between these instruments was found. Furthermore, the evolution of the eight gases was investigated and increasing ozone, HCl, HF, CH4 and C2H6 were found. Springtime Arctic ozone depletion was studied, where six different methods to estimate ozone depletion were evaluated using the ACE-FTS dataset. It was shown that CH4, N2O, HF, and CCl2F2 are suitable tracers to estimate the ozone loss. The loss estimates (mixing ratioand partial column) are consistent for all six methods. Finally, PARIS-IR was prepared for a balloon-borne measurement campaign and a new suntracker for these measurements was designed and tested. The balloon was launched in September 2015. The suntracker performed with a ¹0.04° accuracy. From the balloon-borne sunset spectra, an ozone profile was retrieved and is consistent with measurements from a nearby ozonesonde within approximately 10 %.

This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis utilizes UV-visible spectroscopy to develop new datasets, study Arctic and urban atmospheric composition, and validate satellite data products. The primary instruments used here (the Ground-Based Spectrometers, or GBSs) have been taking measurements at the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL, 80.05°N, 86.42°W) since 1999 and 2006, respectively. The GBS dataset, combined with other measurements at PEARL, was used to validate ozone and NO2 measurements from the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) and Optical Spectrograph and InfraRed Imaging System (OSIRIS) satellite instruments. Ozone from all instruments agrees to within 12.0%, while NO2 measurements agree to within 33.2%. There are no apparent systematic changes in the observed differences between the satellite and the ground-based instruments over time. In the winter/spring of 2020, the unusually strong and cold polar vortex led to unprecedented Arctic ozone depletion. Total column ozone was at an all-time low in the 20-year GBS dataset. Chlorine activation inside the vortex was ongoing until the end of March, resulting in mean chemical ozone loss of 111-127 DU (27-31%) over Eureka, which represents similar absolute loss and greater relative loss compared to that in spring 2011. GBS BrO partial columns were used to investigate Arctic tropospheric ozone depletion during four bromine activation seasons. BrO enhancements show two modes differentiated by air mass history. Contact with the snowpack on sea ice corresponds to increased BrO for one of these modes only, while the other mode is related to storms that almost always bring bromine-enriched air to Eureka. The presence of coarse mode aerosols (likely sea salt aerosol) is a necessary and sufficient condition for observing BrO at Eureka, indicating that sea salt aerosols play an active role in bromine activation. A tropospheric NO2 profile dataset was retrieved from 2018-2020 Pandora spectrometer measurements to investigate NO2 pollution in Toronto. Retrievals using optimal estimation and parametric algorithms show good agreement. Seasonal and diurnal variability is apparent in both the NO2 partial column and surface concentration datasets. During the spring 2020 COVID-19 lockdown in Toronto, daily maximum NO2 values showed substantial reductions.

In this book, we appropriate their conception of research-technology, and ex tend it to many other phenomena which are less stable and less localized in time and space than the Zeeman/Cotton situation. In the following pages, we use the concept for instances where research activities are orientated primarily toward technologies which facilitate both the production of scientific knowledge and the production of other goods. In particular, we use the tenn for instances where instruments and meth ods· traverse numerous geographic and institutional boundaries; that is, fields dis tinctly different and distant from the instruments' and methods' initial focus. We suggest that instruments such as the ultra-centrifuge, and the trajectories of the men who devise such artefacts, diverge in an interesting way from other fonns of artefacts and careers in science, metrology and engineering with which students of science and technology are more familiar. The instrument systems developed by re search-technologists strike us as especially general, open-ended, and flexible. When tailored effectively, research-technology instruments potentially fit into many niches and serve a host of unrelated applications. Their multi-functional character distin guishes them from many other devices which are designed to address specific, nar rowly defined problems in a circumscribed arena in and outside of science. Research technology activities link universities, industry, public and private research or me trology establishments, instrument-making finns, consulting companies, the military, and metrological agencies. Research-technology practitioners do not follow the career path of the traditional academic or engineering professional.
