Book excerpt: Lead selenide and lead selenide/lead sulfide core/shell nanocrystals were investigated for use in near infrared photodetectors. A colloidal synthesis method was used for both the core and core/shell configurations. The lead sulfide shell was examined in order to mitigate oxidation of the nanoparticle surface. Absorbance and photoluminescence spectra were measured at room temperature and 77 K, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy images were also obtained to confirm crystallography and size. Bulk lead selenide was simulated in WIEN2k utilizing the linear-augmented plane wave method of solving density functional theory to better understand the electronic structure of PbSe. The crystal structure, electron density, band structure and density of states are presented and discussed. The calculations correctly predicted a direct band gap at the L point in the Brillouin zone. The band gap calculated was 0.40 eV.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis aims to understand the optical properties of small sized semiconductor NCs that exhibit intrinsic dual emission (core and surface). To study the size dependence of small NCs, a set of CdSe NCs with sizes ranging from 0.89 to 1.66 nm in radius were synthesized. The study confirms that as the nanocrystals become small, the surface emission strongly increases in amplitude, and the core emission broadens and red-shifts. These effects are rationalized in terms of coupling to ligands via electron transfer theory. The transition from the QD to the molecular cluster regime is found to be at 1.2 nm radius, in contrast to the transition from the bulk to QD transition at the Bohr radius of 5.4 nm in CdSe. These size-dependent surface electronic phenomena may be used for light emission applications. Further, the emissive properties of thiol-capped CdSe NCs are investigated through temperature-dependent PL measurements. This thesis demonstrates the influence of thiols on the relative PL intensities of the core and surface emissive states, as well as on the observed Stokes shifts. A redshift of both the core and surface PL in comparison with phosphonate-capped NCs is confirmed with literature, exploring the effect of thiols as excitonic hole-delocalizing ligands. In the end, the thesis describes the application of these NCs in optical nanothermometry. By chemical control of the thermodynamics of the core and surface emission, these nanocrystals support ratiometric temperature sensing over a broad temperature scale." --

Book excerpt: Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) usually have high conductivity and transparency in the visible range and have been widely used in daily life. Recently, TCOs have attracted great interest due to their potential applications in various new optical and electrical devices (flat-panel displays, energy efficient windows, etc.). Nanostructured TCOs can induce new size related properties, for example, when sizes of TCOs are controlled at the nanometer scale, various defects can introduce different defect-related optical emissions. These new nanostructured TCOs combining traditional and new size dependent properties may be used for construction of next generation optical devices. To investigate the optical properties of TCOs at nanoscale, in this thesis, several new kinds of colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) of TCOs have been synthesized and their optical emission and transparency have been explored. The first part of my work focuses on ITO (indium tin oxide) NCs demonstrates phase and size dependence of surface plasmon absorption in the near infrared region. The second part of the thesis describes colloidal synthesis of [gamma]-Ga2O3 with size tunable photoluminescence, further study reveals that the photoluminescence is defect related and can be tuned by changing the defect concentration. In the last part of my study, I develop a methodology for lanthanide doped [gamma]-phase Ga2O3 NCs and reveal tunable chromaticity of the lanthanide doped NCs.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this work is to give a description of the electronic structure and optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots (nanocrystals) containing heterojunctions, i.e. nano-junctions between two semiconductors. These nanostructures have interesting optical properties which are very promising for applications in photonics and photovoltaics. The theoretical description of the effects of the interface demands special attention. We start describing the calculations of the electronic structure of bulk semiconductors using semi-empirical tight-binding, and we show how to apply this technique to semiconductor quantum dots. We develop expressions to connect the discrete levels of energy in a quantum dot and the transitions in optical absorption spectra. The bulk tight-binding parameters are used for the calculation of the electronic structure of quantum dots of single compounds, analyzing the effect of the size variation of the quantum dots. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated, in particular we obtain good values for the bandgap versus size compared to experiments. We apply this method to calculate the electronic structure of PbSe/CdSe core/shell quantum dots, after an analysis of the different types of interfaces that can appear in this system, and we discuss the issues related to the determination of the band offsets. The results of these calculations validate the assumption of the role of the shell as a potential barrier for the electron and the hole. The electronic structures are used in the last chapter to simulate the absorption spectra of PbSe, CdSe and PbSe/CdSe quantum dots. We give theoretical support to recent experiments in transient absorption spectroscopy, revealing groups of new transitions originated by photo-induced intraband absorption. Our calculations shed light on the nature of these optical transitions which can be of interest for applications in photonics.

Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art quantum dot photodetectors, including device fabrication technologies, optical engineering/manipulation strategies, and emerging photodetectors with building blocks of novel quantum dots (e.g. perovskite) as well as their hybrid structured (e.g. 0D/2D) materials. Semiconductor quantum dots have attracted much attention due to their unique quantum confinement effect, which allows for the facile tuning of optical properties that are promising for next-generation optoelectronic applications. Among these remarkable properties are large absorption coefficient, high photosensitivity, and tunable optical spectrum from ultraviolet/visible to infrared region, all of which are very attractive and favorable for photodetection applications. The book covers both fundamental and frontier research in order to stimulate readers' interests in developing novel ideas for semiconductor photodetectors at the center of future developments in materials science, nanofabrication technology and device commercialization. The book provides a knowledge sharing platform and can be used as a reference for researchers working in the fields of photonics, materials science, and nanodevices.
