Book excerpt: During the contracting period the radiometers for the 1970 Aerobee experiment have been designed and built. Two of the radiometers have been tested in a ballon flight experiment using the AFCRL Balloon Borne Solar Pointer BBSP 2oo. The electronic system for the rocket experiment has been constructed by Ball Brothers Corporation. The solar pointing control SPCS-2 for the Aerobee rocket was also ordered from Ball Brothers Corporation. A performance test for this system was performed in August 1969. A filter radiometer has been designed for measuring the OH airglow emission height profile from aboard the Aerobee rocket. Construction of a prototype instrument is still under way. Therefore only tests on various components have been carried out so far. (Author).

The second instrument is a radiometer which allows to determine the fraction of solar radiation absorbed infrared bands of various atmospheric gases. Book excerpt: Radiance measurements of the Earth's horizon in three infrared spectral regions were made during two Aerobee rocket flights at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. Preliminary results indicate equivalent blackbody radiation temperatures in the CO2 band (14.0 - 15.6 microns) varied from 231K to 239K; in the atmospheric window region (10.2 - 11.8 microns) from 205K to 287K; and in the rotational water vapor band (19.5 - 31.8 microns) from 206K to 239K. Numerous dropouts due to clouds are apparent in the atmospheric window and water vapor bands, while no such effect is evident in the CO2 band. The infrared radiometer, stellar aspect sensor and vehicle attitude control system are described, and actual traces of the horizon profiles and outputs from the stellar aspect system are included. Book excerpt: A Nike-Javelin rocket (NJ-74-1) was launched at Poker Flat, Alaska, on 11 Apr 74 at 0801 hours UT during a non-auroral condition. A near-zenith spectral radiance profile was obtained from 54 km to an apogee of 118 km on ascent and from 118 km down to about 85.6 km on descent, using a circular variable filter spectrometer. About 464 spectral scans were obtained during flight, covering the range from 1.7 to 5.4 micrometers at a resolution of about 4 percent. The dominant emission feature was at 4.3 micrometer, which is attributed to the CO2 nu3 fundamental. The upward viewed spectral radiance appeared to range from about 215 MRmicrometer at 54 km to less than the noise equivalent spectral radiance of 3 MR /micrometer at 118 km. In this report are given the first quiet condition (no aurora) rocket data in the auroral zone. (Author).
