Book excerpt: In connection with studies of airfoils applicable to large high-speed aircraft, the effects of roughness on three 22-percent-thick airfoils were investigated. The tests were made over a range of Reynolds numbers from about 6,000,000 to 26,000,000 for the airfoils smooth and with roughness strips applied to the surfaces. The results indicated that for the roughened models the scale effect was generally favorable.

Book excerpt: Summary: Tests were conducted with two typical low-drag airfoils of 90-inch chord to determine the effects of surface projections, grooves, and sanding scratches on boundary-layer transition. The Reynolds number at which a spanwise row of cylindrical projections would cause premature transition was determined for a range of Reynolds number from approximately 3 x 106 to 10 x 106. Data were obtained for projections of various sizes and chordwise locations on both low-drag airfoils. The results were analyzed on the assumption that the critical airfoil Reynolds number for a given projection was a function only of the local-flow conditions around the projection. This assumption neglected possible effects of tunnel turbulence, pressure gradient, boundary-layer Reynolds number, and the original extent of the laminar flow. The data correlated on the basis of this assumption within a range of critical airfoil Reynolds number of ±0.5 x 106 and within a range of projection height of ±0.002 inch. The tests of surface grooves and sanding scratches indicated that, for the range of Reynolds number investigated, the laminar boundary layer was much less sensitive to surface grooves and sanding scratches than to projections above the surface.

Book excerpt: This book reports the latest development and trends in the low Re number aerodynamics, transition from laminar to turbulence, unsteady low Reynolds number flows, experimental studies, numerical transition modelling, control of low Re number flows, and MAV wing aerodynamics. The contributors to each chapter are fluid mechanics and aerodynamics scientists and engineers with strong expertise in their respective fields. As a whole, the studies presented here reveal important new directions toward the realization of applications of MAV and wind turbine blades.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic stall of rapidly pitching and oscillating airfoils is investigated by the numerical solution of the full compressible unsteady two- dimensional Navier-Stokes equations using an alternating-direction-implicit scheme. The flow is assumed to be fully turbulent, and the turbulent stresses are modelled by the Baldwin-Lomax eddy viscosity model. Three airfoils (NACA 0012, NACA 0012-33, and NACA 0012-63) are analyzed for the purpose of examining the influence of leading-edge geometry on unsteady flow separation. It is found that a larger leading edge radius, thicker contouring of the forward part of the airfoil, or increasing reduced frequency results in delaying flow separation and formation of the dynamic stall vortex to a higher angle of attack, yielding higher peak Cl. Within the scope of this study, the pressure gradient encountered by the flow at initial separation is found to be independent of reduced frequency and freestream speed. The critical pressure gradient is dependent on leading edge radius and increases for decreasing leading edge radius.

Book excerpt: The two principal objectives of this research were to achieve an improved understanding of the mechanisms involved in the onset and development of dynamic stall under compressible flow conditions, and to investigate the feasibility of employing adaptive airfoil geometry as an active flow control device in the dynamic stall engine. Presented here are the results of a quantitative (PDI) study of the compressibility effects on dynamic stall over the transiently pitching airfoil, as well as a discussion of a preliminary technique developed to measure the deformation produced by the adaptive geometry control device, and bench test results obtained using an airfoil equipped with the device.
