This book was released on 2013 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: This study investigates the combustion characteristics of cotton seed FAME (C100 and C20), in a direct injection diesel engine. The research compares the combustion and emissions characteristics of cotton seed FAME to ultra-low sulfur diesel #2 (ULSD#2) to investigate possible use in a startup boiler to produce steam for large boiler operation, and for use in diesel engine generators. Fuel properties including viscosity, oxidation stability, lower heating value, thermo-gravimetric and differential thermal analysis, and spray characteristics were analyzed. Fuel property measurements were comparable to ULSD#2 in every aspect except oxidation stability which showed the C100 being stable for a shorter period of time. Mechanical efficiency of ULSD was 83% and presented a 5% decrease for C100; while the overall efficiency was 36% for ULSD and 33% for C100 at 8 bar IMEP. The NOX for C100 was improved and presented an 11% decrease compared with ULSD. Unburned hydrocarbons value (UHC) for ULSD was 2.8 g/kWh at 8 bar IMEP, and were improved by 18% for C100. The carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for C100 was improved with a 17% reduction compared with ULSD at 3 bar but were relatively constant at 8 bar IMEP, presenting a value of 0.82 g/kWh for both fuels. The soot value for ULSD was 1.5 2g/kWh and presented an improved 42% decrease for C100 at 8 bar IMEP. The results suggest a very good performance of cotton seed biodiesel, even at very high content of 100%, especially on the emissions side that showed decreasing values for regulated and non-regulated species.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Bio-fuels and emissions are of great concern today with limited petroleum resources, and increasingly strict regulations by the Environmental Protection Agency on combustion emissions. In this study, a single cylinder, naturally aspirated diesel engine with a separate three vortex combustion chamber is used to investigate combustion and emissions of low sulfur diesel with comparison to blends of biodiesel with diesel. The separate combustion chamber is designed to help reduce emissions, which has not been thoroughly tested with biodiesels. Poultry fat is chosen because of its sustainability characteristics, ease of availability, and high yields of oil to produce biodiesel. To conduct this study, the engine is instrumented with sensors and data acquisition equipment and tested using a dynamometer. Data from both the biodiesel blends and the low sulfur diesel is collected from running the engine at 100% full power for increments of 200 rpm in speed; 2,000-2,600 rpm. NOx emissions vary according to different engine parameters, but overall efficiency is maintained around 31%. Fuel consumption increases by 7-12% depending upon speed and fuel blend, but desired power is maintained with no engine damage or modifications.

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-road diesel engines are significant contributors to air pollution in the United States. Recent regulations put forth by EPA and other environmental agencies have laid out stringent guidelines for engine manufacturers and fuel producers. Recent increases in oil prices and foreign energy dependency has led to a push to produce renewable fuels, which will supplement current reserves. Biodiesel is a clean-burning renewable fuel, that can be blended with petroleum diesel. It is important to understand the effect on engine performance and exhaust emissions when using biodiesel from different feedstocks. The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between engine performance and emissions and cottonseed oil biodiesel used in a diesel engine rated for 14.2 kW. When using cottonseed oil biodiesel blends, CO, hydrocarbon, NOx, and SO2 emissions decreased as compared to petroleum diesel. Carbon dioxide emissions had no definitive trend in relation to cottonseed oil biodiesel blends. Carbon monoxide emissions increased by an average 15% using B5 and by an average of 19% using B100. Hydrocarbon emissions decreased by 14% using B5 and by 26% using B100. Nitrogen oxide emissions decreased by four percent with B5, five percent with B20, and 14% with B100. Sulfur dioxide emissions decreased by an average of 86% using B100, and by 94% using B50 blended with ultra-low sulfur diesel. The difference between peak output power when using biodiesel and diesel was insignificant in blends less that B40. Peak measured power using B100 was about five percent lower than for diesel fuel. Pure cottonseed oil biodiesel achieved and maintained a peak corrected measured power of 13.1 kW at speeds of 2990, 2875, and 2800 rpm at loads of 41.3, 42.7, and 43.8 N-m. Using B5 produced a peak power of 13.6 kW at 2990 rpm and 43.9 N-m and at 2800 rpm and 46.7 N-m, while using B20 produced a peak power of 13.4 kW at 2990 rpm and 43.7 N-m. Brake-specific fuel consumption at peak measured load and torque using B100 was 1238 g/kW-h. Brake-specific fuel consumption at peak measured power and loads using B5 and B20 were 1276 and 1155 g/kW-h.

Book excerpt: The continual rise in oil prices, the shortening supply of oil reserves, & the impending threat of global warming due to combustion engine emissions are all reasons to focus on alternatives to energy from fossil fuels. Biodiesel fuel has provided an alternative to diesel oil for over a decade now, & recent research suggests that it will be an even more viable and economical option in years to come. In this book Author has mainly focused on the Transesterification process for extraction of biodiesel form the crude Cotton Seed Oil (CSO). Then conducted an experimental to determine the performance and emission characteristic of the blended Biodiesel in IC engine. The conventional engine was tested for single cylinder at constant rated speed of 1500 rpm throughout its power range using 100% CSO and blends of 20, 40, 60, & 80%. The results found were very impressive, diesel engine performed satisfactorily on biodiesel, & its blends too had better emission properties than diesel. Properties of the 20% blend are very near to diesel fuel & its performance was better than other blends. This book gives huge knowledge for biodiesel production with its performance & emission characteristics.

Book excerpt: Although the compression ignition (C.I.) engine, invented by Rudolf Diesel, was originally intended to work with pure vegetable oils as fuel, more than a century ago, it was adapted to be used with a fuel of fossil origin, obtained from oil. Therefore, there would be no technical difficulties in returning to the primitive design of using biofuels of renewable origin, such as vegetable oils. The main drawback is found in the one billion C.I. engines which are currently in use, which would have to undergo a modification in the injection system in order to adapt them to the higher viscosity of vegetable oils in comparison to that of fossil fuels. Thus, the gradual incorporation of biofuels as substitutes of fossil fuels is mandatory.
