Book excerpt: We have completed an experiment to obtain diffuse scattering data for use in a comprehensive study of the local-structure changes as a function of molybdenum composition and have made large strides in interpreting some of the major changes found in this study. For these experiments, single crystals of molybdenum substituted VO2 with the formula V1-xMoxO2 were synthesized, with molybdenum compositions up to x = 0.60, using a novel, two-step chemical vapor transport synthesis. Using these large single crystals for total scattering experiments, we report the discovery of the sudden collapse of three-dimensional order in the low-temperature phase of V1-xMoxO2 at x = 0.17 and the emergence of a novel frustrated two-dimensional order at x = 0.19, with only a slight change in electronic properties. Single crystal diffuse x-ray scattering reveals that this transition from the 3D M1 phase to a 2D variant of the M2 phase results in long-range structural correlations along symmetry-equivalent (11L) planes of the tetragonal rutile structure, yet extremely short-range correlations transverse to these planes. Additionally, we report a combined study using single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, and representational analysis to examine both the local and crystallographically averaged atomic structures simultaneously near x = 0.50. Between about x = 0.50 and 0.60, the average structure of V1-xMoxO2 is the parent rutile phase, but the local symmetry is broken by atomic displacements that are best described by an orthorhombic cell in the spacegroup Fmmm. This model is locally identical to the two-dimensionally ordered 2D-M2 phase except the correlation length is much shorter in the 2D plane, and longer in the frustrated one, making it more isotropic.

Book excerpt: Oxide compounds containing the transition metal vanadium (V) have attracted a lot of attention in the field of condensed matter physics owing to their exhibition of interesting properties including metal-insulator transitons, structural transitions, ferromagnetic and an- tiferromagnetic orderings, and heavy fermion behavior. Binary vanadium oxides VnO2n-1 where 2 ≤ n ≤ 9 have triclinic structures and exhibit metal-insulator and antiferromagnetic transitions.[1–6] The only exception is V7O13 which remains metallic down to 4 K.[7] The ternary vanadium oxide LiV2O4 has the normal spinel structure, is metallic, does not un- dergo magnetic ordering and exhibits heavy fermion behavior below 10 K.[8] CaV2O4 has an orthorhombic structure[9, 10] with the vanadium spins forming zigzag chains and has been suggested to be a model system to study the gapless chiral phase.[11, 12] These provide great motivation for further investigation of some known vanadium compounds as well as to ex- plore new vanadium compounds in search of new physics. This thesis consists, in part, of experimental studies involving sample preparation and magnetic, transport, thermal, and x- ray measurements on some strongly correlated eletron systems containing the transition metal vanadium. The compounds studied are LiV2O4, YV4O8, and YbV4O8. The recent discovery of superconductivity in RFeAsO1-xFx (R = La, Ce, Pr, Gd, Tb, Dy, Sm, and Nd), and AFe2As2 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca, and Eu) doped with K, Na, or Cs at the A site with relatively high Tc has sparked tremendous activities in the condensed matter physics community and a renewed interest in the area of superconductivity as occurred following the discovery of the layered cuprate high Tc superconductors in 1986. To discover more supercon- ductors with hopefully higher Tc’s, it is extremely important to investigate compounds having crystal structures related to the compounds showing high Tc superconductivity. Along with the vanadium oxide compounds described before, this thesis describes our investigations of magnetic, structural, thermal and transport properties of EuPd2Sb2 single crystals which have a crystal structure closely related to the AFe2As2 compounds and also a study of the reaction kinetics of the formation of LaFeAsO1-xFx.

Book excerpt: An investigation of the electronic excitation structure of the transition metal oxides was begun which included the effects of correlation of the excited electron with the surrounding medium, relaxation of the electrons around the hole left by the excitation, and the interaction of the excited electron with the hole. Recent theoretical and experimental work has shown that all these effects must be included in order to obtain a detailed understanding of the excitation structure, optical properties, lattice dynamics, and dielectric response of these oxides and many other materials. Local orbitals instead of the usual spatially extended Bloch representation were used. The local orbitals are especially useful in describing the d-electrons, which are localized in position and energy. The extensive codes necessary for the efficient calculation of multicenter integrals were constructed and assembled during the past year. The methods necessary for transforming the band states from the Bloch to the local orbitals representation were developed, and the methods for diagonalizing very large array were investigated. Book excerpt: Binary and mixed oxides incorporating transition metal cations host a broad range of scientifically compelling and technologically significant optical, electronic, and magnetic properties. Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are being explored for applications in energy storage, optoelectronics, sensors, and magnetic storage among many other potential uses. The diverse range of physical properties within this class of materials arises from the large flexibility in chemical compositions and crystal structures. These compositions and structures can be generated during synthesis or tailored after synthesis with external stimuli. In this thesis, I develop strategies for reaching structural and chemical states in transition metal oxides with technologically important optical and electronic properties. I demonstrate a new synthesis strategy for single-crystal SrVO3 films - a transparent conducting oxide with potential applications in display and photovoltaic technologies - using solid-phase epitaxy. By this technique, epitaxial layers of SrVO3 are crystallized from amorphous precursor films. The electrical conductivity and visible light transmission in these epilayers are comparable with SrVO3 formed through other epitaxial synthesis methods. This synthesis route employs thin film deposition and crystallization techniques that are scalable to m2 surface areas. Scalability is a crucial step for commercial applications of transparent conducting oxide layers. Crystal growth from amorphous precursor films is a recent development for transition metal oxides that have traditionally been synthesized using vapor-phase epitaxy. As a result, fundamental insight into the amorphous-to-crystalline transformation and defect formation processes in solid-phase epitaxy for transition metal oxides is comparatively rare. In situ synchrotron x-ray characterization is a powerful experimental approach for gathering mechanistic insight for crystal growth processes. I have designed new instrumentation for synchrotron x-ray studies of the amorphous layer deposition, crystallization, and defect formation processes inherent to solid-phase epitaxy. This instrumentation combines a vacuum sample deposition and crystallization environment with x-ray focusing optics for in situ x-ray microbeam diffraction, reflectivity, and scattering studies. Design features and key capabilities are demonstrated through a series of results from experiments performed during the commissioning of the instrument at the Advanced Photon Source. In a separate ex-situ study, I examine the crystal structure of micrometer-scale regions of SrTiO3 crystallized from nanoscale seeds using lateral solid-phase crystallization. Using a high-energy synchrotron x-ray beam focused to 200 nm, I reveal a continuous rotation in the lattice planes in the laterally crystallized regions. A rotation of nearly 25[degrees] per micrometer of lateral crystallization is measured for several SrTiO3 crystals independent of the crystallographic orientation of the growth front. The uniform lattice rotation rate suggests a single defect formation process that is characteristic of lateral crystal growth through an amorphous precursor layer. These findings support a hypothesis that the lattice rotation is driven by dislocations that form in response to mechanical stresses arising from the density difference across the crystal-amorphous interface. Controlling the oxygen environment is crucial to forming specific structural phases during synthesis. Similarly, modifications to oxygen stoichiometry can be used to modify the physical properties in epitaxial thin films of multivalent transition metal oxides. In this project, I use x-ray nanobeam diffraction and scanning near-field optical microscopy to simultaneously probe the structural and optoelectronic features of oxygen-deficient epitaxial monoclinic vanadium dioxide thin-films. In this study, an electrically conductive phase is patterned in insulating vanadium dioxide using intense electric fields delivered from an atomic force microscope probe. Electrical conductivity arises from oxygen vacancies created in the presence of the electric field that modify the electronic band structure. The stability and relaxation of the electrically conducting state are governed by the oxygen vacancy dynamics that can be manipulated with hard x-ray irradiation. This study demonstrates a way to manipulate nanoscale structural and electronic states in vanadium dioxide with local electric fields and focused hard x-rays, bringing new insights into the stability of the oxygen-deficient conductive phase of vanadium dioxide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vanadium oxides are both fascinating and complex, due in part to the many compounds and phases that can be stabilized as well as the phase transformations which occur between them. The metal to insulator transitions (MITs) that take place in vanadium oxides are particularly interesting for both fundamental and applied study as they can be induced by a variety of stimuli (i.e., temperature, pressure, doping) and utilized in many applications (i.e., smart windows, sensors, phase change memory). Nanocrystals also tend to demonstrate interesting phase behavior, due in part to the enhanced influence of surface energy on material thermodynamics. Vanadium oxide nanocrystals are thus expected to demonstrate very interesting properties in regard to phase stability and phase transformations, although synthesizing vanadium oxides in nanocrystal form remains a challenge. Vanadium sesquioxide (V2O3) is an example of a material that undergoes a MIT. For decades, the low temperature monoclinic phase and high temperature corundum phase were the only known crystal structures of V2O3. However, in 2011, a new metastable polymorph of V2O3 was reported with a cubic, bixbyite crystal structure. In Chapter 2, a colloidal route to bixbyite V2O3 nanocrystals is presented. In addition to being one of the first reported observations of the bixbyite phase in V2O3, it is also one of the first successful colloidal syntheses of any of the vanadium oxides. The nanocrystals possess a flower-like morphology, the size and shape of which are dependent on synthesis time and temperature, respectively. An aminolysis reaction mechanism is determined from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy data and the bixbyite crystal structure is confirmed by Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. Phase stability is assessed in both air and inert environments, confirming the metastable nature of the material. Upon heating in an inert atmosphere above 700 C, the nanocrystals irreversibly transform to the bulk stable corundum phase of V2O3 with concurrent particle coarsening. This, in combination with the enhanced stability of the nanocrystals over bulk, suggests that the bixbyite phase may be stabilized due to surface energy effects, a well-known phenomenon in nanocrystal research. In Chapter 3, the reversible incorporation of oxygen in bixbyite V2O3 is reported, which can be controlled by varying temperature and oxygen partial pressure. Based on XRD and thermogravimetric analysis, it is found that oxygen occupies interstitial sites in the bixbyite lattice. Two oxygen atoms per unit cell can be incorporated rapidly and with minimal changes to the structure while the addition of three or more oxygen atoms destabilizes the structure, resulting in a phase change that can be reversed upon oxygen removal. Density functional theory (DFT) supports the reversible occupation of interstitial sites in bixbyite by oxygen and the 1.1 eV barrier to oxygen diffusion predicted by DFT matches the activation energy of the oxidation process derived from observations by in situ XRD. The observed rapid oxidation kinetics are thus facilitated by short diffusion paths through the bixbyite nanocrystals. Due to the exceptionally low temperatures of oxidation and reduction, this material, made from earth-abundant atoms, is proposed for use in oxygen storage applications, where oxygen is reversibly stored and released. Further oxidation of bixbyite V2O3 under controlled oxygen partial pressure can lead to the formation of nanocrystalline vanadium dioxide (VO2), a material that is studied for its MIT that occurs at 68 C in the bulk. This transformation is accompanied by a change in crystal structure, from monoclinic to rutile phase, and a change in optical properties, from infrared transparent to infrared blocking. Because of this, VO2 is promising for thermochromic smart window applications, where optical properties vary with temperature. Recently, alternative stimuli have been utilized to trigger MITs in VO2, including electrochemical gating. Rather than inducing the expected monoclinic to rutile phase transition as originally proposed, electrochemical gating of the insulating phase was recently shown to induce oxygen vacancy formation in VO2, thereby inducing metallization, while the characteristic V-V dimerization of the monoclinic phase was retained. In Chapter 4, the preparation and electrochemical reduction of VO2 nanocrystal films is presented. The nanocrystalline morphology allows for the study of transformations under conditions that enhance the gating effect by creating a large VO2-electrolyte interfacial area and by reducing the path length for diffusion. The resulting transitions are observed optically, from insulator to metal to insulator and back, with in situ visible-near infrared spectroelectrochemistry and correlated with structural changes monitored by Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopies. The never-before-seen transition to an insulating phase under progressive electrochemical reduction is attributed to an oxygen defect induced phase transition to a new phase. This is likely enabled by the nanocrystalline nature of the sample, which may enhance the kinetics of oxygen diffusion, support a higher degree of lattice expansion-induced strain, or simply alter the thermodynamics of the system.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vanadium oxides are very interesting compounds which exhibit exotic transport phenomena. In particular vanadium dioxide (VO2) undergoes a first-order transition from a high-temperature metallic phase to a low-temperature insulating phase at almost the room temperature (T = 340 K). The resistivity jumps by several orders of magnitude through this transition, and the crystal structure changes from rutile (R-phase) at high-temperature to monoclinic (so-called M1-phase) at low-temperature. The latter is characterized by a dimerization of the vanadium atoms into pairs, as well as a tilting of these pairs with respect to the c-axis. VO2 has also attracted a great deal of attention for its ultrafast optical response, switching between the R and the M1 phase. Despite the large number of experimental studies focusing on this material the physics driving this phase transition and the resulting optical properties is still mysterious. There are intensive reports around the world to make devices such as switches, transistors, detectors, varistors, phase change memory, exploiting the unique properties of VO2. Two physical effects, Peierls, i.e. dimerization, and the Mott mechanism due to strong Coulomb repulsion are important in the metal-insulator transition (MIT) of VO2. Understanding the detailed interplay and the relative importance of both Peierls and Mott mechanism is important for controlling this material with an eye towards applications. For example, whether the driving force of this transition is electronic (i.e. occurring on femtosecond timescales) or structural (occurring on the picosecond timescale) is important to understand the speed of the switching from the M1 to the rutile phase. The insights obtained in this study together with the computational machinery developed, will serve as a basis for rational material design of VO2 based applications.
