Book excerpt: As shear requirements for prestressed concrete girders have changed, some structures designed using older specifications do not rate well with current methods. However, signs of shear distress have not been observed in these bridge girders and they are often deemed to be in good condition. The primary objective of this research program was to investigate the accuracy of existing shear distribution factors, which are used to estimate bridge system live load effects on individual girders, and provide recommendations on shear distribution to be used in Minnesota with four components: a full-scale laboratory bridge subjected to elastic and inelastic behavior, field testing of bridges, a numerical parametric study, and integration of results to develop a screening tool to determine which structures benefitted from refined analysis. Laboratory bridge inelastic testing indicated shear force redistribution after cracking and before ultimate failure. Use of elastic distribution factors is conservative for shear distribution at ultimate capacity. Elastic laboratory testing was used to validate the finite element modeling technique and study the behavior of a barrier and end diaphragm, which affected shear distribution; ignoring their effects was conservative. Parametric study results indicated that a ratio of longitudinal stiffness to transverse stiffness could be used as a screening tool. If the stiffness ratio was less than 1.5, shear demand from a simple, conservative grillage analysis may be more accurate than shear demand from AASHTO distribution factor methods. Grillage analysis shear demand results due to permit trucks may also be more accurate, regardless of the screening tool ratio.

Book excerpt: Lower than desirable shear ratings at the ends of prestressed concrete beams have been the topic of ongoing research between MnDOT and the University of Minnesota. A recent study by the University of Minnesota entitled Investigation of Shear Distribution Factors in Prestressed Concrete Girder Bridges (French et al., 2016) sought to increase the shear rating of a prestressed concrete beam via a refined live load distribution factor, considering the location-based load distribution of each axle along the span. The study also presented a screening tool to determine the likelihood that the refined methodology would improve the shear rating of a given prestressed concrete beam bridge. The research presented within this report implemented the refined shear rating methodology presented by French et al. (2016). MnDOT selected 522 bridges from its inventory noted as having shear rating deficiencies for potential re-evaluation as part of this research. After employing the screening tool, the initial selection was reduced to 127 applicable bridges, of which 50 were selected for re-evaluation. For the 50 bridges evaluated, the refined rating methodology was found to improve the shear ratings by an average of 16 percent. The screening tool also proved to be an effective means of determining the candidacy of a given bridge for re-evaluation.

Book excerpt: The live load distribution factor (DF) equations provided by AASHTO-LRFD for the decked precast/prestressed concrete (DPPC) girder bridge system do not differentiate between a single or multilane loaded condition. This practice results in a single lane load rating penalty for DPPC girder bridges. The objective of this project is to determine DF equations which accurately predict the distribution factor of the DPPC girder bridge system when it is only subjected to single lane loading. Eight DPPC girder bridges were instrumented. Each bridge was loaded with a single load vehicle to simulate the single lane loaded condition. The experimental data was used to calibrate 3D FE models and 2D grillage models of the DPPC girder bridge system. The calibrated models were used to conduct a parametric study of the DPPC girder bridge system subjected to a single lane loaded condition. Two sets of new equations that describe the single lane loaded distribution factor for both shear and moment forces of these bridges are proposed and compared with AASHTOLRFD DF equations.

Book excerpt: This research investigates possible design-related causes of apparent shear cracks on MDOT prestressed concrete (PC) bridge girders; assesses the adequacy of PC shear design and rating methods; and recommends changes to these procedures. It involved a field survey, laboratory testing, FEA modeling, and bridge field testing. The field survey included sixteen PC bridges with potential shear cracks, and the shear capacities of the girders were analyzed and compared to various shear load demands. The laboratory testing consisted of six tests on full-scale beam specimens of different shear span-to-depth ratios and stirrup spacings. An FEA model was developed and validated using the experimental data. Using the model, a parametric analysis was conducted on a variety of PC bridge girder configurations. A regression analysis was performed to modify existing shear capacity procedures to best-fit the FEA results. Field tests of two PC bridges constructed continuous for live load were conducted to determine interior joint continuity and girder distribution factors.

Book excerpt: The design procedure to calculate the shear capacity of bridge girders that was used forty years ago is very different than those procedures that are recommended in the current AASHTO LRFD Specifications. As a result, many bridge girders that were built forty years ago do not meet current design standards, and in some cases warrant replacement due to insufficient calculated shear capacity. However despite this insufficient calculated capacity, these bridge girders have been found to function adequately in service with minimal signs of distress. The objective of this research was to investigate the actual in service capacity of prestressed concrete girders that have been in service over an extended period of time.

Book excerpt: The shear provisions of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials bridge design code have changed significantly in recent years. The 2004 Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and 2002 Standard shear provisions for the design of prestressed concrete bridge girders typically require more shear reinforcement than the 1979 Interim shear provisions. The purpose of this research was to determine whether or not bridge girders designed according to the 1979 interim shear provisions were underdesigned for shear and develop a method to identify potentially underdesigned girders. Two shear capacity tests were performed on opposite ends of a bridge girder removed from Mn/DOT Bridge No. 73023. The stirrup spacing in the girder suggested it was designed according to the 1979 Interim shear provisions. The results from the shear tests indicated the girder was capable of holding the required shear demand because the applied shear at failure for both tests was larger than the factored shear strength required by the 2004 LRFD HL-93 and 2002 Standard HS20-44 loading. The results of a parametric study showed that girders designed using the 1979 Interim were most likely to be underdesigned for shear near the support and that the girders most likely to be underdesigned in this region had smaller length to girder spacing ratios.
