Emphasis has been placed upon hydrogen-transfer reactions of model compounds representative of structural moieties present in or produced from coal at conditions comparable to those used in coal liquefaction. Screening experiments were first undertaken to determine the relative ease of fragmenting C--C, C--N, C--O, and C--S bonds in the presence of a hydrogen-donor solvent. Condensed aromatics, such as benzofuran, were stable at temperatures up to 475°C. Non-condensed aromatics, such as dibenzyl, fractured in the range of 400 to 475°C. Dibenzyl ether, aromatic sulfides, and compounds having carbonyl and alcohol groups reacted readily at temperatures below 425°C. Detailed experimentation using various donors with dibenzyl indicates that the thermal reaction of dibenzyl forming benzyl radicals is rate controlling. Book excerpt: The project is underway with initial emphasis upon both hydrogen transfer fundamentals, namely, observing the rate of conversion, rate of hydrogen transfer, and the site of hydrogen transfer, and upon refining the techniques to measure hydrogen donor capacity. Experimentation has started with the use of Powhatan No. 5 (Pittsburgh Seam) coal so that results will be applicable to SRC-II technology, which is in the pilot plant stage of development. In addition, a kinetic model has been prepared which correlates the data of the liquefaction of two types of coals in the presence of good and poor hydrogen donor solvents. This single kinetic model, which includes the reaction of coal + solvent (oil) --> more reaction coal, adequately explains the observed phenomena of a net consumption of solvent (for poor donor solvents) at low space times.

Book excerpt: Hydrogen transfer experiments using Powhatan Number 5 Mine bituminous coal and deuterium labeled tetralin are underway. The rate of coal conversion, hydrogen transfer and site of hydrogen transfer are being measured. Preliminary results are consistent with those previously obtained with Kentucky and Illinois seam coals; namely, about 3.5 g of hydrogen is transferred per 100 g MAF coal at reactor conditions of 450/sup 0/C, 30 minutes and 30% feed coal in tetralin. At these conditions, about 73% conversion of coal to toluene solubles is achieved. Results at lower times (0 and 10 minutes) and temperatures (300, 350, and 400/sup 0/C) are also discussed. An evaluation of the techniques to measure hydrogen donor capacity has indicated that the best instrumental approach available to us is that of Seshadri et al in which /sup 13/C-NMR is used to quantify the level of hydroaromatics. Both GC/MS and group type MS techniques do not appear to be adequate for this purpose. Plans are being established to carry out solvent recycle and follow the effect of isomerization and adduction with the number of cycles.
