Book excerpt: Slope failures are not only hazardous to the public, but they are also costly to maintain and repair. A field testing program involving five test sites has been executed in an effort to develop better design practices for slopes reinforced with slender reinforcement. This thesis is directed at three of these sites, including a slope located along Interstate 70 near Emma, MO, a slope located along US 36 near Stewartsville, MO, and a slope located along Interstate 435 (at Wornall Road) in Kansas City, MO. This thesis describes analyses performed to evaluate current analysis models and to develop recommendations for future design of slopes stabilized with slender reinforcement. The analysis models were evaluated by comparing measured bending moments from the field test sites with predicted bending moments calculated using conventional soil-structure interaction models implemented in the commercial software, LPile, Version 5.0®. The models and input parameters for the soil-structure interaction analysis were varied to produce matches between the measured and predicted response of the reinforcement. The models that produced the best results for each site were then collectively assessed to develop recommendations for use in slope designs with slender reinforcement. Results of the analyses described suggest that the "API Sand (O'Neill)" model should be used when modeling reinforcement for long-term, drained loading conditions, regardless of the type of soil present. This model should be used with a p-multiplier selected based on the relative pile batter angle. The soil movement profile should be input as anticipated soil movements down to the sliding depth, and then zero below the sliding depth.

The landslides cause significant damage to infrastructure and millions of dollars are required each year to fix the slope. A sustainable and costeffective option to stabilise the slope can have significant benefits, as it will reduce the cost of maintenance and when using recycled pins, it may help the environment at the same time. The recycled plastic pin is made from recycled plastic bottles and other plastic waste. Several demonstration projects already proved the effectiveness of RPP as an alternative option to fix slope failure, with a maximum failure depth of 7-8 ft. In this book, every detail of the slope stabilisation technique using recycled plastic pins, including the design techniques and several case studies, are included. This will help to explain the basics of this important technique and will be used as reference to design the slope stabilisation scheme using recycled plastic pins.

Book excerpt: Slope failure is a common phenomenon in areas with slope constructed on high plasticity clay and shallow slope failure is predominant in North Texas. The cumulative maintenance cost of minor slides is equal or greater than major landslides. But, cost associated with post failure maintenance can be reduced significantly if an appropriate stabilization method is adopted. Thus, selection of appropriate and economically viable slope stabilization method has got great importance for the geotechnical engineers. Recently, a new approach of shallow slope stabilization technique is introduced using Recycled Plastic Pin (RPP). RPP used in shallow slope stabilization should pass beyond the slip surface to pin the sliding surface with the stiff soil. An extensive study based on the field performance of RPP installed for shallow slope stabilization was carried out by Loehr and Boders in Missouri, and Khan in Texas. In most of the cases, the horizontal displacement of RPP reinforced slope was about 3 inches both in Missouri and in Texas. The field investigation of the RPP reinforced slopes leads researchers to develop two new design protocols. They are limit resistance method by Loehr and Boders and performance based method by Khan. The limit resistance design method did not consider the effects of creep of RPP. This limitation was taken into account and a new performance based design method is proposed by Khan. But, instead of considering group resistance of RPP, only resistance of single RPP is considered in performance based method. Thus, the objective of this study is to determine the group resistance of RPP in sustainable slope stabilization. To attain the goal, number of RPP required forming an effective group at different spacing is determined. In order to fulfill the objective, an extensive study has been conducted based on numerical modeling and supported by field data. Thereby, a new design chart is proposed considering group resistance of RPP, where maximum horizontal displacement and flexural stress of RPP are taken into account. Parametric study is carried out to determine the variation of resistance between group of RPP and single RPP at different loading condition, soil strength parameters, spacing and depth of slip surface, where the horizontal displacement of single RPP and group of RPP is determined and plotted graphically. The graphical representation shows the difference of resistance between group of RPP and single RPP with increasing load, soil strength, spacing and depth of slip surface. Thus, the design charts for group of RPP at different spacing are developed considering different types of soil for different slope, where the horizontal displacement and/or flexural stress is shown with increasing applied load. Similar conditions of Interstate 70-Emma Site, as presented in the literature by Loehr and Borders is plotted on developed design chart for 4-ft deep slip surface. The interpolated horizontal displacement according to the developed design chart for RPP at 3-ft spacing is 0.51 and is in good agreement with Interstate 70-Emma Site. Finally, a multiplication factor is introduced to establish a relationship between the developed design charts to performance based method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shallow slope failures are predominant in the North Texas area and pose significant maintenance problems for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). As a cost effective alternative, the Recycled Plastic Pin (RPP) can be utilized to stabilize the shallow slope failure. RPP are fabricated from recycled plastics and waste materials (i.e. polymers, sawdust, and fly ash). It is a lightweight material and less susceptible to chemical and biological degradation than alternative reinforcing element. RPPs are driven into the slope face, which provide additional resistance along the slip surface and increase the factor of safety. The current study summarized the remediation of shallow slope failure using RPP. Two highway slopes, one located over US 287 near the St. Paul overpass in Midlothian and one over Loop 12 near the UP RP rail overpass in Dallas, Texas were stabilized using RPP. Three 50 ft. sections were selected and reinforced using RPP after a crack, caused by slope movement, was observed over the shoulder in the US 287 slope. Two 50 ft. control sections were placed between the reinforced sections to compare the performances of the slope. A 50 ft. section over top slope and a 100 ft. section at the bottom slope of Loop 12 were reinforced with RPP as a temporary solution. The field performance of the slope was monitored using instrumented RPPs, inclinometers and surveying instruments. The performance monitoring results of US 287 slope indicated that the unreinforced control sections had significant settlement at the crest of the slope, as much as 15 inches. In addition, a total of 3 inch increments in settlement had taken place during the year. In contrast, almost no increment in settlement was observed at the reinforced section in US 287 slopes. Moreover, the total settlements in the reinforced sections were 2 inch to 4 inch which was less compared to the unreinforced sections. The horizontal displacement of the US 287 slope had taken place after 1 year of construction which ranged up to 1.5 inch. After 1 year, the horizontal displacement became less than 0.1 inch at the Reinforced Section 1. The performance monitoring results of the Loop 12 slope presented that the top of the retaining wall is still moving after the installation of RPP. However, RPP installed adjacent to the footing provided lateral resistance and restricted the sliding of the wall. The maximum resistance was observed with closer RPP spacing. The cost analysis for the US 287 slope indicated that the cost for slope stabilization using RPP can be 50% lower compared to the cost of conventional slope stabilization approaches. The performance of the US 287 slope was further evaluated in numerical study and a parametric study was conducted to evaluate the effect of length and spacing of RPP which indicated that the deformation of reinforced slope increase with wider RPP spacing. Finally, a performance-based design method was developed to design the slope stabilization for surficial failure. The design method considers three limiting criteria which consider restricting failure of soil, limit horizontal displacement of RPP and limit maximum flexure in RPP. Based on the design method, the calculated factors of safeties were in good agreement with the safety analysis results in numerical study.

Book excerpt: The first book to provide a detailed overview of Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Walls Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls deploy horizontal layers of closely spaced tensile inclusion in the fill material to achieve stability of a soil mass. GRS walls are more adaptable to different environmental conditions, more economical, and offer high performance in a wide range of transportation infrastructure applications. This book addresses both GRS and GMSE, with a much stronger emphasis on the former. For completeness, it begins with a review of shear strength of soils and classical earth pressure theories. It then goes on to examine the use of geosynthetics as reinforcement, and followed by the load-deformation behavior of GRS mass as a soil-geosynthetic composite, reinforcing mechanisms of GRS, and GRS walls with different types of facing. Finally, the book finishes by covering design concepts with design examples for different loading and geometric conditions, and the construction of GRS walls, including typical construction procedures and general construction guidelines. The number of GRS walls and abutments built to date is relatively low due to lack of understanding of GRS. While failure rate of GMSE has been estimated to be around 5%, failure of GRS has been found to be practically nil, with studies suggesting many advantages, including a smaller susceptibility to long-term creep and stronger resistance to seismic loads when well-compacted granular fill is employed. Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls will serve as an excellent guide or reference for wall projects such as transportation infrastructure—including roadways, bridges, retaining walls, and earth slopes—that are in dire need of repair and replacement in the U.S. and abroad. Covers both GRS and GMSE (MSE with geosynthetics as reinforcement); with much greater emphasis on GRS walls Showcases reinforcing mechanisms, engineering behavior, and design concepts of GRS and includes many step-by-step design examples Features information on typical construction procedures and general construction guidelines Includes hundreds of line drawings and photos Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Walls is an important book for practicing geotechnical engineers and structural engineers, as well as for advanced students of civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering.
