This book was released on 1966 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimental program uses the 4 MeV, 100 ampere, 0.3 microsec pulse width, beam from the Astron accelerator facility to study the interaction of an intense relativistic electron beam with a gas column, usually at a pressure of a few mm Hg. The beam promptly ionizes the gas, generating a plasma column in and around the beam. In this environment measurements were made pertinent to two beam driven instabilities, namely the streaming instability and the hose instability.

Book excerpt: A 36-month program to study the linear relativistic electron beam-plasma interaction is proposed. This program is part of a joint proposal between the Physics International Company (PI) and Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) that combines the advanced electron beam generator technology at PI with the highly developed computer simulation technology at LASL. The proposed LASL program includes direct support for 1- and 3-m beam-plasma interaction experiments planned at PI and development of theory relevant for design of a 10-m proof-of-principle electron beam-driven linear solenoidal reactor.

Book Synopsis Frontiers in High Energy Density Physics by : National Research Council
Download or read book Frontiers in High Energy Density Physics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-05-11 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent scientific and technical advances have made it possible to create matter in the laboratory under conditions relevant to astrophysical systems such as supernovae and black holes. These advances will also benefit inertial confinement fusion research and the nation's nuclear weapon's program. The report describes the major research facilities on which such high energy density conditions can be achieved and lists a number of key scientific questions about high energy density physics that can be addressed by this research. Several recommendations are presented that would facilitate the development of a comprehensive strategy for realizing these research opportunities.
Book Synopsis Electron-Stream Interaction with Plasmas by : Richard J. Briggs
Download or read book Electron-Stream Interaction with Plasmas written by Richard J. Briggs and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 1964-11-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study considers the instabilities that result when an electron beam is injected into a plasma. A number of different models of the system are considered, and all instabilities are classified according to whether they are convective instabilities (amplifying waves) or nonconvective (absolute) instabilities. The study also analyzes the instabilities in unbounded beam-plasma systems and in systems of finite extent transverse to the electron stream and gives a detailed consideration of the possibility of a strong interaction with the ions in a hot-electron plasma. In addition, the author presents mathematical criteria for identifying absolute instabilities and amplifying waves. These criteria are based only on an analysis of the dispersion equation of the system and are not restricted to beam-plasma systems. Two things need to be said about this book: the chapter on absolute and convective instabilities makes an important contribution to the field. Second, it should be pointed out that the theoretical results are reduced to a form which make them readily available to an experimentalist. Plasma physicists and electronic engineers will be interested in this work.
Book Synopsis An Investigation of Surface Waves and Their Amplification by Beam/plasma Interaction by : Velimir M. Ristic
Download or read book An Investigation of Surface Waves and Their Amplification by Beam/plasma Interaction written by Velimir M. Ristic and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation is described of the propagation of surface waves on a plasma column, and their interaction with an electron beam penetrating the plasma. Apart from its basic plasma physics aspects, the study has been carried out with the aim of assessing the potential for application of this mechanism of amplification, and its coupling characteristics. The dispersion relation for plasma surface waves is first examined for several geometries in which the column is surrounded by one or two dielectric layers, with and without a surrounding conducting waveguide. For a practical geometry, and for the case of an electron beam filling the plasma, the dispersion relation for the combined beam/plasma system is analyzed according to general criteria for determining instability and wave types. A brief examination is made of the dispersion relation for the situation where the beam only partially fills the plasma. Preliminary experiments are described in which an attempt was made to measure growth in the surface wave mode, and to relate the measurements to the theory. (Author).

Book Synopsis Investigation and Study of Beam-plasma Submillimeter Generation by : M. GLICKMAN
Download or read book Investigation and Study of Beam-plasma Submillimeter Generation written by M. GLICKMAN and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous theoretical and experimental studies showed that microwave power may be generated from the electron beam-plasma interaction. T is analysis is concerned with achieving conditions in the plasma which allows microwave power generation on an electron beam traversing the plasma at frequencies above 300 kmc. Theoretical studies show the dependence of power gain on the length and the percent ionization of the plasma. A cesium plasma has been produced in a diode discharge with a density greater than 5 x 10 to the 13th power per cc (electron plasma frequency higher than 63 kmc) and an ionization of 25%. A novel approach to the problem of coupling microwave power to the plasma has been investigated theoretically. (Author).
Book Synopsis Investigation of Linear Beam and New Concepts of Microwave Power. Volume V. Interaction of High-power Electron Beam and Plasma by : D. M KERR (Jr)

This book was released on 1965 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Penning discharge was used to generate in hydrogen a plasma suitable for use in a microwave electron beam plasma amplifier. Plasma densities on the order of 10 to the 11th power electrons per cubic centimeter were obtained. A two-fluid theoretical model of the plasma was developed in order to explain the operation of the discharge. It is supported by diagnostic measurements of two kinds, microwave-cavity measurements and probe measurements. The detuning of a resonant microwave cavity was found to be a fast and reliable method for measuring the average plasma density. Probe measurements provided information on the average plasmaelectron energies and on the shape of the radial plasmadensity profile. The design of the cavities is described in full, and equivalent circuit concepts are found to be useful in interpreting the experimental results. The probe and cavity measurements both showed that plasma densities that will permit the operation of a beam-plasma amplifier at S-band can be generated in the present system using hydrogen gas. (Author).
