Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of aircraft maneuvers has been developed to augment evaluation maneuvers used currently by the flying qualities and flight test communities. These maneuvers extend evaluation to full aircraft dynamics throughout the aircraft flight envelope. As a result, a tie has been established between operational use and design parameters without losing control of the aircraft evaluation process. Twenty maneuvers are described as an initial set to examine primarily high-angle-of-attack conditions. Perhaps as important as the maneuvers themselves is the method used to select them. These maneuvers will allow direct measurement of flying qualities throughout the flight envelope instead of merely comparing parameters to specification values. Aircraft Maneuvers, Flight test, Flying qualities, Agility.

Book excerpt: The X-31 Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability Demonstrator was unique among experimental aircraft. A joint effort of the United States and Germany, the X-31 was the only X-plane to be designed, manufactured, and flight tested as an international collaboration. It was also the only X-plane to support two separate test programs conducted years apart, one administered largely by NASA and the other by the U.S. Navy, as well as the first X-plane ever to perform at the Paris Air Show. Flying Beyond the Stall begins by describing the government agencies and private-sector industries involved in the X-31 program, the genesis of the supermaneuverability concept and its initial design breakthroughs, design and fabrication of two test airframes, preparation for the X-31's first flight, and the first flights of Ship #1 and Ship #2. Subsequent chapters discuss envelope expansion, handling qualities (especially at high angles of attack), and flight with vectored thrust. The book then turns to the program's move to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center and actual flight test data. Additional tasking, such as helmet-mounted display evaluations, handling quality studies, aerodynamic parameter estimation, and a "tailless" study are also discussed. The book describes how, in the aftermath of a disastrous accident with Ship #1 in 1995, Ship #2 was prepared for its outstanding participation in the Paris Air Show. The aircraft was then shipped back to Edwards AFB and put into storage until the late 1990s, when it was refurbished for participation in the U. S. Navy's VECTOR program. The book ends with a comprehensive discussion of lessons learned and includes an Appendix containing detailed information.

Book excerpt: This program was conducted to evaluate the X-29 configuration at high angle of attack. The flight test objectives were to evaluate the high angle of attack (AOA) flying qualities and to conduct a limited military utility and agility metric test effort with the X-29 number two research aircraft (USAF S/N 820049). These objectives were met. The X-29 was an advanced technology demonstrator aircraft which incorporated a forward swept wing, a thin supercritical airfoil, an aeroelastically tailored composite wing cover, full span flaperons providing variable camber, variable incidence close coupled canards, high longitudinal static instability, a three surface longitudinal control configuration, and a triplex digital flight control system.

Book excerpt: The second edition of Flight Stability and Automatic Control presents an organized introduction to the useful and relevant topics necessary for a flight stability and controls course. Not only is this text presented at the appropriate mathematical level, it also features standard terminology and nomenclature, along with expanded coverage of classical control theory, autopilot designs, and modern control theory. Through the use of extensive examples, problems, and historical notes, author Robert Nelson develops a concise and vital text for aircraft flight stability and control or flight dynamics courses.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high-angle-of-attack, low-speed stall/departure characteristics of the F-4J and F-14A are analyzed, using a six-degree-of-freedom mathematical model with nonlinear aerodynamics. Cause-effect relationships are investigated for maneuver limiting factors including wing rock, nose slice, and rolling departures. Cross-derivatives of L alpha, N alpha, and M beta alter key transfer function parameters. A piloted simulation validates analytic predictions and demonstrates that departure warning, susceptibility, and severity are strongly influenced by the static cross-derivatives. A connection between roll numerator parameter values and pilot perception of departure susceptibility and severity is identified. Potential modifications for the high AOA sections of the MIL-F- 8785B Flying Qualities Specification are proposed: a criterion for the real part of the roll numerator root, further recommendations for minimizing departure susceptibility and certain sideslip influences, and a flying quality rating form for assessing departure and recovery characteristics. Part I, Analysis and Simulation, presents a summary of the complete investigation and results. Part II, Piloted Simulation Assessment of Bihrle Departure Criteria, presents a detailed comparison of analytical prediction and piloted simulation results for a specific set of programmed control deflections. Part III, Appendices -- Aerodynamic Models, contains the detailed aerodynamic models employed in the F- 4J and F-14A high-angle-of-attack analysis and validation and the equations of motion, aerodynamic models, control system configurations, etc., employed in the piloted simulation.
