Book excerpt: A large number of models employing a variety of geometric concepts and fabricated from plastic reinforced with glass, carbon, and boron fibers were tested under external hydrostatic pressure. The results were evaluated to explore the feasibility of using filament-reinforced plastics (FRP) as a structural material for the pressure hulls of deep-ocean research vehicles. A concurrent theoretical study indicated that FRP offers the greatest potential for this application at depths greater than 15,000 ft. The test results to date substantiate the basic strength-to-weight advantages of FRP at these depths over other state-of-the-art metals such as HY-140 steel and HY-110 titanium. However, a number of significant problems must be solved or circumvented before this material can be considered acceptable for manned deep-submergence pressure hull applications. These problems include the lack of complete understanding of failure mechanisms; the lack of a verified analysis of the response of thick orthotropic shells of filament-wound materials, principally in regions of complex structural details; the loss of strength due to exposure of cut fibers to a high-pressure environment; the need for development of standardized fabrication procedures adaptable to quality control; and the need for development of nondestructive test techniques which can be used to reliably evaluate the structural integrity of the fabricated hull throughout its service life. A model program (including 1/3-scale models) to determine the feasibility of near-term application of unpenetrated GRP unstiffened and ring-stiffened cylinders with titanium closures has been initiated to find solutions to the above problems. Book excerpt: Shell structures are used in all phases of structures, from space vehicles to deep submergence hulls, from nuclear reactors to domes on sport arenas and civic buildings. With new materials and manufacturing methods, curved thin walled structures are being used increasingly. This text is a graduate course in the theory of shells. It covers shells of isotropic materials, such as metal alloys and plastics, and shells of composite materials, such as fibre reinforced polymer, metal or ceramic matrix materials. It provides the essential information for an understanding of the underlying theory, and solution of some of the basic problems. It also provides a basis to study the voluminous shell literature. Beyond being primarily a textbook, it is intended also for self study by practising engineers who would like to learn more about the behaviour of shells. The book has two parts: Part I deals with shells of isotropic materials. In this part the mathematical formulations are introduced involving curvilinear coordinates. The techniques of solutions and resulting behavior is compared to planar thin walled isotropic structures such as plates and beams. Part II then treats the behavior of shells, involving anisotropic composite materials, so widely used today. The analysis involves the complications due to the many elastic constants, effects of transverse shear deformation, thermal thickening and offer effects arising from the properties of composite materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results to date of structural research programs to investigate lightweight, glass-reinforced plastics or composite materials for deep-submergence vehicles are summarized. Of significance from these studies is the need to consider effects attributable to the matrix material and bonding between fibers and matrix, that is, maintaining integrity of the structure in a water environment under high pressure and utilizing hull concepts which lend themselves to shear-sensitive materials. Plans for present and future structural research to study more extensively the use of fiber-reinforced plastic materials for pressure hull applications are also reviewed. (Author).

Book excerpt: The book includes six chapters that cover Virginia history from initial settlement through the 20th century plus one that deals with the important role of underwater archaeology. Written by prominent archaeologists with research experience in their respective topic areas, the chapters consider important issues of Virginia history and consider how the discipline of historic archaeology has addressed them and needs to address them . Changes in research strategy over time are discussed , and recommendations are made concerning the need to recognize the diverse and often differing roles and impacts that characterized the different regions of Virginia over the course of its historic past. Significant issues in Virginia history needing greater study are identified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochar is the carbon-rich product when biomass (such as wood, manure or crop residues) is heated in a closed container with little or no available air. It can be used to improve agriculture and the environment in several ways, and its stability in soil and superior nutrient-retention properties make it an ideal soil amendment to increase crop yields. In addition to this, biochar sequestration, in combination with sustainable biomass production, can be carbon-negative and therefore used to actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, with major implications for mitigation of climate change. Biochar production can also be combined with bioenergy production through the use of the gases that are given off in the pyrolysis process. This book is the first to synthesize the expanding research literature on this topic. The book's interdisciplinary approach, which covers engineering, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, economics and policy, is a vital tool at this stage of biochar technology development. This comprehensive overview of current knowledge will be of interest to advanced students, researchers and professionals in a wide range of disciplines.
