The links between devices are dynamic and often short-lived. Therefore, disseminating data from a source to recipients with a quality of service guarantee and efficiency is a very challenging problem. Furthermore, the interactions between devices are based on opportunity and are dependent on the devices mobility, which have extreme diverse patterns. The aim of this thesis is to investigate dissemination of data in opportunistic networks. In particular two conflicting objectives are studied: minimising the overhead costs and maximising the information coverage over time. We also take into account the effects of mobility. Extensive computer simulation is developed to explore models for information dissemination and mobility. On top of existing mobility models (i.e. Random Walk, Random, Waypoint and Gauss Markov) a hybrid model is derived from the Random Waypoint and Gauss Markov mobility models. The effect on mobility model on dissemination performance is found to be highly significant. This is based on sensitivity analysis on mobility and node density. We first consider different baseline push techniques for data dissemination. We propose four different push techniques, namely Pure Push, Greedy, L-Push and Spray and Relay to analyse the impact of different push techniques to the information dissemination performances. The results present different trade-offs between objectives. As a strategy to manage overheads, we consider controlling to which nodes information is pushed to by establishing a social network between devices. A logical social network can be built between mobile devices if they repeatedly see each other, and can be defined in different ways. This is important because it shows how content may potentially flow to devices. We explore the effects of mobility for different definitions of the social network. This shows how different local criteria for defining links in a social network lead to different social structures. Finally we consider the effect of combining the social structure and intelligent push techniques to further improve the data dissemination performance in opportunistic networks. We discover that prioritising pushing over a social network is able to minimise the overhead costs but it introduces a dissemination delay.

Book excerpt: With the increasing popularization of personal hand-held mobile devices, more people use them to establish network connectivity and to query and share data among themselves in the absence of network infrastructure, creating mobile social networks (MSNet). Since users are only intermittently connected to MSNets, user mobility should be exploited to bridge network partitions and forward data. Currently, data route/forward approaches for such intermittently connected networks are commonly "store-carry-and-forward" schemes, which exploit the physical user movements to carry data around the network and overcome path disconnection. And since the source and destination may be far away from each other, the delay for the destination to receive the data from the source may be long. MSNets can be viewed as one type of socially-aware delay tolerant networks (DTNs). Observed from social networks, the contact frequencies are probably different between two friends and two strangers, and this difference should be taken into consideration when designing data dissemination and query schemes in MSNets. In this book, the fundamental concepts of MSNets are introduced including the background, key features and potential applications of MSNets, while also presenting research topics, such as, MSNets as realistic social contact traces and user mobility models. Because the ultimate goal is to establish networks that allow mobile users to quickly and efficiently access interesting information, particular attention is paid to data dissemination and query schemes in subsequent sections. Combined with geography information, the concepts of community and centrality are employed from a social network perspective to propose several data dissemination and query schemes, and further use real social contact traces to evaluate their performance, demonstrating that such schemes achieve better performance when exploiting more social relationships between users.

Online social networks, wireless technologies and smart-phones are very common and enable communication to be maintained while people are mobile. These types of communication are closely related to humans because they carry the devices. In this research, we detect, analyse and compare opportunistic networks with human social networks. Currently opportunistic networking platforms have not gone beyond the research and development stage where they are challenging to design and implement. Therefore we develop an indoor mobility tracking system to track the participant movement inside buildings and to record the physical interaction between participants using Bluetooth technology. This system has two different ways of abstracting opportunistic networks from the experimental data: mobility (device-to-building) and co-located (device-to-device) interactions. The mobility detection system has been studied using a volunteer group of students in the School of Computer Science and Informatics. This group also has been studied to understand their social networking structure and characteristics by using electronic survey methodology. Different techniques have been used to investigate the individuals' networks from the survey and mobility movements and a comparison between them. From a precision and recall technique, we find that 60-80 % of the participants' social network is embedded in the opportunistic network but a small proportion 10-20% of the opportunistic network is embedded in the social network. This shows the presence of many weak links in the opportunistic network that means the opportunistic network connectivity requires a very small number of key-players to disseminate information throughout the network. We also examine both networks from the perspective of information dissemination. We find that device-to-device create many more weak links to disseminate information rather than server detection. Therefore, information quickly floods throughout the co-located network.
