T is analysis is concerned with achieving conditions in the plasma which allows microwave power generation on an electron beam traversing the plasma at frequencies above 300 kmc. Theoretical studies show the dependence of power gain on the length and the percent ionization of the plasma. A cesium plasma has been produced in a diode discharge with a density greater than 5 x 10 to the 13th power per cc (electron plasma frequency higher than 63 kmc) and an ionization of 25%. A novel approach to the problem of coupling microwave power to the plasma has been investigated theoretically. (Author).

Book excerpt: The objective of our research is to investigate the physics as well as to develop the technology of compact submillimeter-wave devices.(1) A revolutionary new device, the gyro-frequency multiplier, which can potentially generate 50 kW at 1-2 Thz by using a 140 GHz gyrotron as its input source, has been tested in our laboratory. (2) Our second-harmonic gyro-TWT amplifier, which is based on our recent marginal stability design (MSD) procedure, yielded extremely good results, including a record setting output power of 207 kW, with 13% efficiency, 16 dB saturated gain, 2% bandwidth and was completely stable. (3) The MSD procedure was also used to design two other stable, high performance amplifiers: a 1 MW, 140 GHz, third harmonic gyro-TWT and a 100 kW CW, 95 GHz, TE(01) gyro-TWT. (4) We have also begun a major new program to develop high power, ultra-wideband prebunched FELs for radar applications using a photoemitted rf gun (5) We have also continued to construct a high-performance 250 kW CW, 33.2 GHz TE(01)TE(02) gyroklystron amplifier and begun a 70 kW CW, 95 GHz, third harmonic, smooth bore gyroklystron amplifier program.

(2) High-power harmonic gyro-TWTs can be designed to operate in high order modes in large size waveguide by using the marginal stability design criterion. (3) Our high power, second-harmonic TE2 1 gyro-TWT, which is predicted to generate an order of magnitude higher power than state-of- the-art fundamental frequency gyrotrons, has been fully designed and construction is well underway. (4) The interaction strength in our high-harmonic CARM increases as the electron Larmor radius moves closer to the wall radius as the magnetic field is lowered towards a grazing intersection. Ionic sound waves were observed on the plasma column of the demountable plasma coupler. It was shown that the existence of these instabilities enhances diffusion and lowers the plasma density. A grid placed in front of the discharge cathode could suppress or enhance the instability. The propagation velocity of the ionic sound waves was measured. (Author).

Book excerpt: This contract was in essence a feasibility study of a new interaction scheme for extracting beams. The proposed interaction should take place when an array of small electron beams are collected by a thin metallic film deposited on the surface of a dielectric. The interaction takes place between the conduction current and the RF electric field within the volume of the thin metallic film. An approximate theoretical analysis of the problem is presented and the power output which might be expected from such an interaction is calculated. A practical method of modulating the array of electron beams is presented. A preliminary experiment is reported which demonstrated that the thin film is not damaged by the electron beam. Design and fabrication problems of the electron gun and beam modulator are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical investigation of the emission of electrons, ions, and vertical particles from a tungsten cathode which is surface-heated by a laser beam is described. Principal emphasis is given the phenomenon of electron emission because of the interest in its application to the formation of a very dense electron beam. Two different experimental approaches are taken in obtaining electron emission. The first approach is to collect electrons which are ''boiled off'' the surface the laser beam strikes, while the second approach is to use a very thin tungsten ribbon to collect electrons from the surface opposite the one the laser beam strikes. Preliminary theoretical work describing these phenomena is discussed.
