Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guide to Modified Exhaust Systems: A Reference for Law Enforcement Officers and Motor Vehicle Inspectors is a slim, portable manual for law enforcement officials, motor vehicle inspectors, prosecutors, and legislators, as well as all citizens who desire peace and quiet. Excessive noise is a major public health issue. High noise levels are associated with hearing loss, heart disease, sleep deprivation, chronic fatigue, ringing of the ears, and aggressive behavior. Loud noise also damages communities, reduces property values, and denies individuals the right to peacefully enjoy their own home and property. One of the major sources of excessive and unnecessary noise is from motorcycles equipped with modified exhaust systems. By definition, a modified exhaust is not of the type installed at the time of manufacture, does not meet the manufacturer's specifications, does not comply with manufacturing regulatory standards, and is the root cause of excessively loud vehicles. Guide to Modified Exhaust Systems: A Reference for Law Enforcement Officers and Motor Vehicle Inspectors concisely provides law enforcement personnel and regular citizens the tools they need to fight back against excessive vehicle noise levels. The book includes numerous color photographs to make it easy to visually identify the illegal equipment installed on some motorcycles that is responsible for the great majority of nuisance noise levels.

Book excerpt: The topics most critical to exhaust gas aftertreatment are described in depth: the problems which need to be overcome, and the possible solutions currently under investigation. After treatment is covered as an emissions subject in its own right; and all components of the entire system are included, not just catalysts. Highly technical issues are presented in a way that makes them readily accessible to the non-specialist. It Includes 700 references.

Book excerpt: Increasingly stringent vehicle emissions legislation has lead to the integration of catalytic converters into the automotive exhaust manifold. A uniform catalyst flow distribution is crucial to minimize pollutant emission and pressure loss, and avoid catalyst degradation. This work establishes objective design criteria for these systems. The methodology enables high-resolution velocity measurements in the manifold, using a charged engine flow rig and oscillating hot wire anemometer. Experiments reveal local flow reversal and strong resonance fluctuations. Numerical models predict the flow dynamics beyond the scope of the experiments, and help to understand the gas dynamic resonances. The book explains how steady-state flow simulations can accurately predict transient flow in a fired engine. Design criteria are formulated for catalyst manifolds, predicting the collector efficiency in terms of flow uniformity from an early conceptual stage. The literature review, methodology and findings of this book are relevant for academic and industrial engineers interested specifically in automotive catalyst research and design, or experimental fluid dynamics in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To extract maximum performance, an engine needs an efficient, well-designed, and properly tuned exhaust system. In fact, the exhaust system's design, components, and materials have a large impact on the overall performance of the engine. Engine builders and car owners need to carefully consider the exhaust layout, select the parts, and fabricate the exhaust system that delivers the best performance for car and particular application. Master engine builder and award-winning writer Mike Mavrigian explains exhaust system principles, function, and components in clear and concise language. He then details how to design, fabricate, and fit exhaust systems to classic street cars as well as for special and racing applications. Air/exhaust-gas flow dynamics and exhaust system design are explained. Cam duration and overlap are also analyzed to determine how an engine breathes in air/fuel, as the exhaust must efficiently manage this burned mixture. Pipe bending is a science as well as art and you’re shown how to effectively crush and mandrel bend exhaust pipe to fit your header/manifold and chassis combination. Header tube diameter and length is taken into account, as well as the most efficient catalytic converters and resonators for achieving your performance goals. In addition, Mavrigian covers the special exhaust system requirements for supercharged and turbocharged systems. When building a high-performance engine, you need a high-performance exhaust system that’s tuned and fitted to that engine so you can realize maximum performance. This comprehensive book is your guide to achieving ultimate exhaust system performance. It shows you how to fabricate a system for custom applications and to fit the correct prefabricated system to your car. No other book on the market is solely dedicated to fabricating and fitting an exhaust system in high-performance applications.

Book excerpt: Given the myriad exhaust compounds and the corresponding problems that they can pose in an exhaust management system, the proper choice of such systems is a complex task. Presenting the fundamentals, technical details, and general solutions to real-world problems, Semiconductor Industry: Wafer Fab Exhaust Management offers practical guidance on selecting an appropriate system for a given application. Using examples that provide a clear understanding of the concepts discussed, Sherer covers facility layout, support facilities operations, and semiconductor process equipment, followed by exhaust types and challenges. He reviews exhaust point-of-use devices and exhaust line requirements needed between process equipment and the centralized exhaust system. The book includes information on wet scrubbers for a centralized acid exhaust system and a centralized ammonia exhaust system and on centralized equipment to control volatile organic compounds. It concludes with a chapter devoted to emergency releases and a separate chapter of examples illustrating these systems in use. Drawing on the author's 20 years of industry experience, the book shows you how to customize strategies specific to your needs, solve current problems, and prevent future issues in your exhaust management systems.
