Their increasing use has underlined the need to understand their principal mode of failure, delamination. This important book reviews key research in understanding and preventing delamination. The first part of the book reviews general issues such as the role of fracture mechanics in understanding delamination, design issues and ways of testing delamination resistance. Part two describes techniques for detecting and characterising delamination such as piezoelectric sensors, the use of lamb waves and acoustic emission techniques. The next two sections of the book discuss ways of studying and modelling delamination behaviour. The final part of the book reviews research on delamination behaviour in particular conditions such as shell and sandwich structures, z-pin bridging and resin bonding. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Delamination behaviour of composites is a standard reference for all those researching laminated composites and using them in such diverse applications as microelectronics, aerospace, marine, automotive and civil engineering. Book excerpt: The use of laminated composites is becoming increasingly ubiquitous in many industries as this material has a high strength-to-weight ratio, and offers customization and flexibility in design. However, delamination damage, which reduces the strength and stiffness of the material, is common and often difficult to detect during inspection. The integration of delamination failure considerations into the design and analysis process is of the utmost importance, and therefore necessitates experimental characterization of delamination, as well as structural-scale numerical models which accurately predict delamination behavior. In this thesis the end loaded split (ELS) specimen was used to experimentally investigate mode II delamination, which is less well understood than mode I delamination. Force-displacement data was used to characterize the mode II critical strain energy release rate, as well as to study the capabilities of two crack growth models: the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT), and cohesive zone model (CZM). The numerical model results demonstrated good agreement with the experimental test data, however neither the experimentally determined mode II critical strain energy release rates, nor the crack growth simulations were free of size effects. In an effort to establish a more robust material model to characterize mode II delamination, through-thickness displacement field data was analyzed, but was found to lack the resolution necessary to accurately capture cracked, or even uncracked beam behavior.

Delamination is the most important damage mechanisms for these materials. In many composite components delaminations grow under a varying mode mix that depends on the crack length. It is important to develop methods that can characterise subcritical, mixed-mode growth in fatigue delamination. The objective of this investigation is the characterisation of variable mixed-mode fatigue delamination in composite laminates. A mixed-mode fatigue delamination model is proposed. Opposite to literature mixed-mode fatigue delamination models, the proposed model assumes a non-monotonic variation of the propagation parameters with the mode mix. The mixed-mode end load split (MMELS) test, in which the propagation mode varies with the crack extent, is analysed. Two theoretical approaches present in the literature are considered. However, the resulting expressions are not equivalent and a more accurate alternative analysis is carried out based on the virtual crack closure technique. Significant findings are found for materials characterisation.

Book excerpt: A combined theoretical and experimental study has been conducted on the delamination of fibre reinforced polymeric composites. The main objectives were to gain a better understanding of the physical origin of delamination fracture toughness and to develop theoretical models to predict the critical strain energy release rates of delamination in composite materials. Of the many energy dissipation mechanisms present in the delamination process, crack tip plastic deformation was determined to be the most critical one. Two analytical beam models, based on the double cantilever beam (DCB) specimen and the end notched flexure (ENF) specimen, were developed. A fracture criterion, based on the size of the crack tip plastic zone, was incorporated into these beam models so that the mode I and mode II critical strain energy release rates of composites can be predicted using the corresponding resin and fibre properties as well as composite structural parameters. A complete set of mechanical tests were performed on five polymeric composite systems, including both thermoset and thermoplastic systems, and on their corresponding neat polymer resins. The theoretical predictions for delamination fracture toughness from the present analytical models agreed very well with the data obtained in the present experiments and those in the literature over a wide range of composite laminates.

Book excerpt: The mode I and II delamination of multi-directional composite laminates have been studied using a J-integral approach. The analytical and experimental formalism to apply the J-integral to delamination have been developed and verified on three different composite material systems with matrix toughness varying from very brittle to very tough. Large deflections and rotations, midplane straining and distributed damage are taken into account in the methodology. The experimental conditions under which a path independent J may be measured have been established. The effect of several variables including specimen geometry, stacking sequence, and material constitutive behavior on the J-Moment-at-the-crack-tip relationship have been determined. Multidirectional composite laminates are both more susceptible to far field damage in the off- axis plies and less stiff than undirectional layups. These two factors cause a greater tendency to geometric and material nonlinearity in delamination testing. The use of a traditional G approach to characterize fracture behavior of such laminates gives artificially high indications of the delamination resistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing use of polymer composites is leading to increasing demand for fractographic expertise. Fractography is the study of fracture surface morphologies and it gives an insight into damage and failure mechanisms, underpinning the development of physically-based failure criteria. In composites research it provides a crucial link between predictive models and experimental observations. Finally, it is vital for post-mortem analysis of failed or crashed polymer composite components, the findings of which can be used to optimise future designs.Failure analysis and fractography of polymer composites covers the following topics: methodology and tools for failure analysis; fibre-dominated failures; delamination-dominated failures; fatigue failures; the influence of fibre architecture on failure; types of defect and damage; case studies of failures due to overload and design deficiencies; case studies of failures due to material and manufacturing defects; and case studies of failures due to in-service factors. With its distinguished author, Failure analysis and fractography of polymer composites is a standard reference text for researchers working on damage and failure mechanisms in composites, engineers characterising manufacturing and in-service defects in composite structures, and investigators undertaking post-mortem failure analysis of components. The book is aimed at both academic and industrial users, specifically final year and postgraduate engineering and materials students researching composites and industry designers and engineers in aerospace, civil, marine, power and transport applications. Examines the study of fracture surface morphologies in uderstanding composite structural behaviour Discusses composites research and post-modern analysis of failed or crashed polymer composite components Provides an overview of damage mechanisms, types of defect and failure criteria

The methodology accounts for residual thermal stresses, cyclic thermal stresses, and cyclic mechanical stresses. The modeling is based on the classical lamination theory and a sublaminate theory. The prediction methodology determines the strain energy release rate, G, at the edge of a laminate and compares it with the mode I fatigue and fracture toughness of the composite. To verify the methodology, isothermal static tests at 23°C, 125°C, and 175°C and tension-tension fatigue tests at 23°C and 175°C were conducted on laminates. The material system used was a carbon/bismaleimide, IM7/5260. Two quasi-isotropic lay-ups were used, [45/-45/0/90]s and [-45/45/90/0]s. Also, 24-ply unidirectional double cantilever beam specimens were tested to determine the fatigue and fracture toughness of the composite at different temperatures. Raising the temperature had the effect of decreasing the value of G at the edge for these lay-ups and also to lower the fatigue and fracture toughness of the composite. Experimentally, the static stress to edge delamination was not affected by temperature but the number of cycles to edge delamination decreased as temperature increased. The ply interface for delamination was well predicted. The predicted static stress and the number of cycles to edge delamination was generally conservative for the room temperature tests because of the large mode II G component present. For the elevated temperature tests the mode II component is smaller and the static stress and number of cycles to the onset to delamination was generally well predicted.

In order to improve the interlaminar fracture toughness, the concept of "interlayer" has been applied to thermoset composite materials. In the present paper, the static and fatigue interlaminar fracture characteristics of a interlayer toughened carbon/epoxy, T800H/3900-2, were examined and compared with those of a thermoplastic composite, APC2, as a reference.

Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at the Sixth International Conference on Composite Structures (ICCS/6) held at Paisley College, Scotland in September 1991. The Conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College. It was co-sponsored by Scottish Enterprise, the National Engineering Laboratory, the US Army Research, Development and Standardisation Group-UK, Strathclyde Regional Council and Renfrew District Council. It forms a natural and ongoing progression from the highly successful ICCS/1/2/3/4 and 5 held at Paisley in 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1989 respectively. As we enter the final decade of this century many organisations throughout the world are adopting a prophetic role by attempting to forecast future scientific advances and their associated impact on mankind. Although some would argue that to do so is folly, without such futuristic visionaries the world would be that much poorer. IntelJigent speculation based on research trends and historical advances, rather than fanciful theories, breathes a healthy air of enthusiasm into the scientific community. Surely this is the very oxygen necessary to ignite the fir~s of innovation and invention amongst pioneers of research.
