Book excerpt: Recognizing the benefits of global trade, many of the world's developing countries and countries with economies in transition, have sought to actively participate in the global trading regime. Recently, however, the undesirable effect of environmental degradation has emerged as a result of rapid increase in trade. This case study on Chile's Mining sector is one of a series of United Nations Environment Programme publications that discusses the country's experience with the environmental impacts of trade liberalization on their natural and environmental resources. It also presents innovative strategies to address negative impacts and strengthen positive ones. The other country studies available are: on Bangladesh's Shrimp farming industry; India's automotive sector; the Philippines' forestry sector; Romania's water sector and Uganda's fisheries sector

Book excerpt: This book covers a broad spectrum of issues shaping the current paradigm of minerals sector governance. The ultimate aim of the book is to understand trends and developments in mineral law and policy occurring at international, regional, cross-border and in some selected cases at national level and also to identify some of the challenges lying ahead. With these objectives in view, the book brings together a representative selection of the most knowledgeable authors on the subject. The contributions deal with a diverse range of issues tackled from interdisciplinary perspectives. Topics are divided into five main chapters: international and comparative aspects of mineral law; actors and policies in the minerals industry; investment prospects, financial and fiscal issues; sustainable development and regional outlooks. The book aspires to serve as a useful reference for scholars, practitioners, students and all those with an interest in current developments in the areas reviewed. Book excerpt: One hundred years ago, the world celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal, which connected the world’s two largest oceans and signaled America’s emergence as a global superpower. It was a miracle, this path of water where a mountain had stood—and creating a miracle is no easy thing. Thousands lost their lives, and those who survived worked under the harshest conditions for only a few silver coins a day. From the young "silver people" whose back-breaking labor built the Canal to the denizens of the endangered rainforest itself, this is the story of one of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, as only Newbery Honor-winning author Margarita Engle could tell it.

Book excerpt: This paper aims to lay a wide-ranging base for untangling the digital economy, in order to facilitate and moderate the high-speed evolution and create an awareness of the new economic coherence. It attempts to show the differences between industrial and digital economics. It finds that old models based on methods of traditional industrial economics still provide a stable framework for analysis of the new age economy whilst also highlighting the need for future refocusing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From AD 1550 to 1850, the Araucanian polity in southern Chile was a center of political resistance to the intruding Spanish empire. In this book, Tom D. Dillehay examines the resistance strategies of the Araucanians and how they used mound building and other sacred monuments to reorganize their political and culture life in order to unite against the Spanish. Drawing on anthropological research conducted over three decades, Dillehay focuses on the development of leadership, shamanism, ritual, and power relations. His study combines developments in social theory with the archaeological, ethnographic, and historical records. Both theoretically and empirically informed, this book is a fascinating account of the only indigenous ethnic group to successfully resist outsiders for more than three centuries and to flourish under these conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This republished Special Issue highlights recent and emergent concepts and approaches to water governance that re-centers the political in relation to water-related decision making, use, and management. To do so at once is to focus on diverse ontologies, meanings and values of water, and related contestations regarding its use, or its importance for livelihoods, identity, or place-making. Building on insights from science and technology studies, feminist, and postcolonial approaches, we engage broadly with the ways that water-related decision making is often depoliticized and evacuated of political content or meaning—and to what effect. Key themes that emerged from the contributions include the politics of water infrastructure and insecurity; participatory politics and multi-scalar governance dynamics; politics related to emergent technologies of water (bottled or packaged water, and water desalination); and Indigenous water governance.

However, the region's exports to Asia remain concentrated in few commodities involved a small number of large firms. This book explores the present and future scope for the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in biregional trade and value chains and the measures that can be taken to make those chains more inclusive and sustainable. It encourages governments in Latin America to improve the business environment in order to encourage multinational firms to invest, upgrade and innovate in the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La 4e de couverture indique : "The swift expansion of developing Asia is probably the most significant structural change in the world economy of the twenty-first century. Latin America, and in particular South America, have strongly benefited from developing Asia's surge. China has become one of the region's main trade partners. Despite their benefits, strengthened trans-Pacific economic relations have also become a cause for concern in Latin America, due to major imbalances of different kinds. The purpose of this book is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to document the growing investment and trade relations between Latin America and Asia, as well as some of their imbalances. On the other hand, it provides several examples on how to upgrade trans-Pacific economic relations."
