Book excerpt: Numerical solutions of the laminar, incompressible boundary-layer equations are presented for flows involving separation and reattachment. Regular solutions are obtained with an inverse approach in which either the displacement thickness or the skin friction is specified; the pressure is deduced from the solution. A vorticity--stream-function formulation of the boundary-layer equations is used to eliminate the unknown pressure. Solutions of the resulting finite-difference equations, in which the flow direction is taken into account, are obtained by several global iteration schemes which are stable and have unconditional diagonal dominance. Results are compared with Klineberg and Steger's separated boundary-layer calculations, and with Briley's solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for a separated region. In addition, an approximate technique is presented in which the streamwise convection of vorticity is set equal to zero in the reversed flow region; such a technique results in a quick forward-marching procedure for separated flows.

Book excerpt: The possibility of non-unique solutions to the laminar boundary equations in direct problem calculations has been identified for decelerating flow. For flows far from separation or reattachment one solution is physically reasonable and the others unrealistic. As a separation or reattachment point is approached, the multiple solutions approach each other and become identical. Understanding of this behavior allows direct problem calculations through separation, although such calculations are not practical. The computer code used to generate these results was developed to solve compressible, laminar or turbulent boundary layer and free wake problems in direct or inverse mode. The equation formulation uses a variable scaling based on the local displacement thickness rather than the more common Levy-Lees scaling or stream function form are possible.

Book excerpt: An approximate analytical theory is developed for predicting nonsimilar laminar boundary layer flows with separation, reversed flow and reattachment including subsonic viscous-inviscid interation, with application to a separation bubble problem. The analytical approach is based on a triple-deck flow model, the boundary layer being divided into two layers overlaid by a third region of interacting inviscid flow. It is shown that this model has a heretofore-unrecognized double-branched solution character that enables it to pass through separation and reattachment without signularities and provide a unified description over a wide range of both attached and reversed flow states. An iterative stream-wise pass method of calculation is devised which is free from the usual Crocco-Lees critical points occurring in interaction problems. Application to a specific example involving a linear adverse pressure gradient yields results in good agreement with an exact Navier-Stokes solution. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report presents an efficient method for calculating laminar and turbulent boundary-layer flows for standard and inverse boundary-value problems. It is applicable to both incompressible and compressible flows. The standard boundary-layer problem considers the solution of the usual boundary-layer equations for a given external velocity distribution. The inverse problem considers the solution of the governing equations for assigned wall shear or assigned displacement thickness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iterative finite-difference techniques are developed for integrating the boundary-layer equations, without approximation, through a region of reversed flow. The numerical procedures are used to calculate incompressible laminar separated flows and to investigate the conditions for regular behavior at the point of separation. Regular flows are shown to be characterized by an integrable saddle-type singularity that makes it difficult to obtain numerical solutions which pass continuously into the separated region. The singularity is removed and continuous solutions ensured by specifying the wall shear distribution and computing the pressure gradient as part of the solution. Calculated results are presented for several separated flows and the accuracy of the method is verified. A computer program listing and complete solution case are included.

Book excerpt: This volume contains 37 contributions in which the research work is summarized which has been carried out between 1984 and 1990 in the Priority Research Program "Physik abgeloster Stromungen" of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Society). The aim of the Priority Research Program was the inten sive research of the whole range of phenomena associated with separated flows. Physi cal models as well as prediction methods had to be developed based on detailed experi mental investigations. It was in accordance with the main concept of the research program that scientists working on problems of separated flows in different technical areas of application participated in this program. The following fields have been represented in the program: aerodynamics of wings and bodies, aerodynamics of auto mobiles, turbomachinery, ship hydrodynamics, hydraulics, internal flows, heat exchan gers, bio-fluid-dynamics, aerodynamics of buildings and structures. In order to concentrate on problems common in all those areas the emphasis of the program was on basic research dealing with generic geometric configurations showing the fundamental physical phenomena of separated flows. The engagement and enthusiasm of all participating scientists are highly appreciated. The program was organized such that all researchers met once a year to report on the progress of their work. Special thanks ought to go to Prof. E. A. Muller (Gottingen), Prof. H. Oertel jun. (Braunschweig), Dr. W. Schmidt (Dornier), Dr. H. -W. Stock (Dornier) and Dr. B. Wagner (Dornier), who had the functions of referees on those annual meetings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-Dimensional Separated Flows provides a systematic presentation of the theory of separated flow around bodies. The main classes of aerodynamic problems of plane-parallel flow around bodies are described, and the steady aerodynamic, unsteady aerodynamic, and statistical characteristics of a trailing wake are determined. Numerical methods based on the synthesis of models for non-viscous incompressible flow and boundary layer, algorithms, examples, and systematic comparisons are presented. The book also includes numerical results for the problem of separated flow around fixed, oscillating, and rotating cylinders, in addition to results for separated flow around an aerofoil over a wide range of angles. Two-Dimensional Separated Flows will benefit researchers and students studying aerodynamics, aircraft dynamics, aeroelasticity, and the aerodynamics of building structures.
