Book excerpt: In this paper we consider an eigenvalue problem which arises in the study of rectangular membranes. The mathematical model is an elliptic equation, in potential form, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show that the potential is uniquely determined, up to an additive constant, by a subset of the nodal lines of the eigenfunctions. A formula is shown which, when the additive constant is given, yields an approximation to the potential at a dense set of points. We present an estimate for the error made by the formula. A substantial part of this work is the derivation of the asymptotic forms for a rich set of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a large set of rectangles.

Book excerpt: The impact of optimization methods in electromagnetism has been much less than in mechanical engineering and particularly the solution of inverse problems in structural mechanics. This book addresses this omission: it will serve as a guide to the theory as well as the computer implementation of solutions. It is self-contained covering all the mathematical theory necessary.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we study the nonlinear, non-local boundary value problem consisting of the second order equation -( p(t)y') ' + q(t) = w( t)f(y) on [a,b] and one of two boundary conditions involving a Riemann-Stieltjes integral. By relating the problems to the eigenvalues of the corresponding linear Sturm-Liouville problem with a two-point separated boundary condition, we obtain results on the existence and nonexistence of nodal solutions to these problems. The shooting method and a generalized energy function are used to prove the main results. We also discuss the changes in the existence of different types of nodal solutions as the problem changes. Finally, we examine a more general differential equation with multiple terms on the right hand side.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a very timely exposition of part of an important subject which goes under the general name of “inverse problems”. The analogous problem for continuous media has been very much studied, with a great deal of difficult mathematics involved, especially partial differential equations. Some of the researchers working on the inverse conductivity problem for continuous media (the problem of recovering the conductivity inside from measurements on the outside) have taken an interest in the authors' analysis of this similar problem for resistor networks. The authors' treatment of inverse problems for electrical networks is at a fairly elementary level. It is accessible to advanced undergraduates, and mathematics students at the graduate level. The topics are of interest to mathematicians working on inverse problems, and possibly to electrical engineers. A few techniques from other areas of mathematics have been brought together in the treatment. It is this amalgamation of such topics as graph theory, medial graphs and matrix algebra, as well as the analogy to inverse problems for partial differential equations, that makes the book both original and interesting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest in inverse problems of spectral analysis has increased considerably in recent years due to the applications to important non-linear equations in mathematical physics. This monograph is devoted to the detailed theory of inverse problems and methods of their solution for the Sturm-Liouville case. Chapters 1--6 contain proofs which are, in many cases, very different from those known earlier. Chapters 4--6 are devoted to inverse problems of quantum scattering theory with attention being focused on physical applications. Chapters 7--11 are based on the author's recent research on the theory of finite- and infinite-zone potentials. A chapter discussing the applications to the Korteweg--de Vries problem is also included. This monograph is important reading for all researchers in the field of mathematics and physics.

Book excerpt: Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems 11e, like its predecessors, is written from the viewpoint of the applied mathematician, whose interest in differential equations may sometimes be quite theoretical, sometimes intensely practical, and often somewhere in between. The authors have sought to combine a sound and accurate (but not abstract) exposition of the elementary theory of differential equations with considerable material on methods of solution, analysis, and approximation that have proved useful in a wide variety of applications. While the general structure of the book remains unchanged, some notable changes have been made to improve the clarity and readability of basic material about differential equations and their applications. In addition to expanded explanations, the 11th edition includes new problems, updated figures and examples to help motivate students. The program is primarily intended for undergraduate students of mathematics, science, or engineering, who typically take a course on differential equations during their first or second year of study. The main prerequisite for engaging with the program is a working knowledge of calculus, gained from a normal two or three semester course sequence or its equivalent. Some familiarity with matrices will also be helpful in the chapters on systems of differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finite Strip Method in Structural Analysis is a concise introduction to the theory of the finite strip method and its application to structural engineering, with special reference to practical structures such as slab bridges and box girder bridges. Topics covered include the bending of plates and plate-beam systems, with application to slab-beam bridges; plane stress analysis; vibration and stability of plates and shells; and finite layer and finite prism methods. Comprised of eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the theory of the finite strip method, highlighting the importance of the choice of suitable displacement functions for a strip as well as the formulation of strip characteristics. Subsequent chapters consider many different types of finite strips for plate and shell problems and present numerical examples. The extension of the finite strip method to three-dimensional problems is then described, with emphasis on the finite layer method and the finite prism method. The final chapter discusses some computer methods that are commonly used in structural analysis. A folded plate computer program is included for completeness, and a detailed description for a worked problem is also presented for the sake of clarity. This monograph will be of interest to civil and structural engineers.

The ability to determine a "cause" from an observed "effect" is a powerful one. Researchers now have at their disposal a variety of techniques for solving inverse problems, techniques that go well beyond those useful for relatively si
