Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of natural resource inventories were conducted throughout the Boston Harbor Islands, including terrestrial, marine and estuarine ecosystems. The resource inventories enhance our appreciation for the habitats and species that occur within the Boston Harbor Islands landscape. These resource inventories provide a scientific foundation for natural resource management decisions, will assist in the design of long-term monitoring programs, and help identify areas requiring additional inventory.
Book Synopsis Intertidal Fish Inventory of San Juan Island National Historical Park (2002) by : National Park National Park Service
Download or read book Intertidal Fish Inventory of San Juan Island National Historical Park (2002) written by National Park National Park Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 2002, coastal and fisheries staff from Olympic National Park conducted a four-day inventory of intertidal fishes at San Juan Island National Historical Park. Beach seine sampling was employed in all intertidal zone habitat types associated with the coastal areas of the American and English Camp units. A total of 26 sites were sampled in both park units, with 11 sites sampled in the protected bay habitats of English Camp and 15 in the more exposed coastal habitats of American Camp. Intertidal habitat diversity was relatively low, with most areas dominated by mixed-coarse gravel and sand (American Camp) or mud/silt (English Camp) substrates. A total of 14 species were documented including various baitfish (smelt, herring, sandlance), surfperch, flatfish, sculpins, and gunnels. This project is the first effort to inventory the intertidal fishes of San Juan Island National Historical Park and only represents the assemblage structure found within the limited sampling period.
Book Synopsis Blue Carbon: Beyond the Inventory by : William Edward Newns Austin
Download or read book Blue Carbon: Beyond the Inventory written by William Edward Newns Austin and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic will coincide with an international Blue Carbon Conference at the Royal Society of Edinburgh in November 2021, during the UNFCCC COP26 climate negotiations; we seek to showcase Blue Carbon as a Nature-based Solution for Climate Change, People and Biodiversity. The conference theme identifies the growing climate mitigation opportunities presented by Blue Carbon, yet also seeks to highlight the emergent research that points to the wider climate mitigation services of carbon in the marine environment - what we are calling "beyond the inventory". We welcome contributions that address the science and policy dimensions of Blue Carbon, particularly where these highlight opportunities and mechanisms for the protection, restoration and creation of Blue Carbon habitats. We also welcome case-study examples that highlight successful partnerships in a wide range of international settings and would particularly encourage contributions that show-case legal, policy or investment opportunities.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Environmental Toxicology by : Wayne Landis
Download or read book Introduction to Environmental Toxicology written by Wayne Landis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth edition includes new sections on the use of adverse outcome pathways, how climate change changes how we think about toxicology, and a new chapter on contaminants of emerging concern. Additional information is provided on the derivation of exposure-response curves to describe toxicity and they are compared to the use of hypothesis testing. The text is unified around the theme of describing the entire cause-effect pathway from the importance of chemical structure in determining exposure and interaction with receptors to the use of complex systems and hierarchical patch dynamic theory to describe effects to landscapes.

Download or read book Wetlands and Habitats written by Yeqiao Wang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authored by world-class scientists and scholars, The Handbook of Natural Resources, Second Edition, is an excellent reference for understanding the consequences of changing natural resources to the degradation of ecological integrity and the sustainability of life. Based on the content of the bestselling and CHOICE-awarded Encyclopedia of Natural Resources, this new edition demonstrates the major challenges that the society is facing for the sustainability of all well-being on the planet Earth. The experience, evidence, methods, and models used in studying natural resources are presented in six stand-alone volumes, arranged along the main systems of land, water, and air. It reviews state-of-the-art knowledge, highlights advances made in different areas, and provides guidance for the appropriate use of remote sensing and geospatial data with field-based measurements in the study of natural resources. Volume 3, Wetlands and Habitats, provides fundamental information on wetlands and their integral functions as a productive ecosystem. The topics it covers include wetlands biodiversity, wetlands classification and monitoring, floods, river ecosystems, pollution, and more. New to this edition are discussions on wetland vegetation, assessment of current wetland health status, restoration, sea-level rises and coastal storm, vulnerability to human impacts, and lakes and wetlands remote sensing. This volume demonstrates the key processes, methods, and models used through many case studies from around the world. Written in an easy-to-reference manner, The Handbook of Natural Resources, Second Edition, as individual volumes or as a complete set, is an essential reading for anyone looking for a deeper understanding of the science and management of natural resources. Public and private libraries, educational and research institutions, scientists, scholars, and resource managers will benefit enormously from this set. Individual volumes and chapters can also be used in a wide variety of both graduate and undergraduate courses in environmental science and natural science at different levels and disciplines, such as biology, geography, earth system science, and ecology.

Download or read book Harbour Ecology written by John Humphreys and published by Pelagic Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poole Harbour is protected and recognised, nationally and internationally, for its ecological importance. However, it has also been classified as polluted and eutrophic. These twin designations – protected yet polluted – exemplify the condition of many estuaries, making Poole Harbour an ideal subject for elucidating the circumstances behind this apparent paradox. The outcome of a conference entitled ‘Spotlight on Poole Harbour: Environment & Economics’ organised by the Poole Harbour Study Group, this book comprises four main parts. Part I, ‘Background’, provides a broad introduction to the harbour in terms of its pre-historical and historical significance for human communities and gives a conceptual overview of its modern character and uses. Part II, ‘Ecology’, contains chapters ranging from plankton to marine mammals. The subsequent parts focus on industries dependent on the biological and chemical ‘ecological services’ of the estuary: Part III, ‘Fisheries’, covers recreational and commercial fishing and aquaculture, examining economic value and key shellfish species. Part IV, ‘Water Quality’, addresses those industries that require the harbour to remediate various effluents, as well as some of the environmental consequences and noteworthy efforts to reduce such impacts. Part V, ‘Conclusion’, by the editors examines certain general shortcomings of environmental legislation and regulation manifest in the case of Poole Harbour. A central concern throughout is the question of sustainable development in coastal and marine contexts, making this wide-ranging study relevant well beyond the bounds of its primary geographical focus.
