Book excerpt: The main objective of this literature review is to summarize policies, including legislation, regulations and guidelines, related to the harvest of woody forest biomass in Canada. The focus of the literature review is on policy that applies to Crown land. The report focusses on policy related to biomass harvesting from logged blocks and roadside debris, rather than purpose-grown plantations, since this is seen as the major new forest biomass energy source, and policy relating to the latter has not been developed in Canada.--Document.

Book excerpt: Globally, forest vegetation and soils are both major stores of terrestrial organic carbon, and major contributors to the annual cycling of carbon between the atmosphere and the biosphere. Forests are also a renewable resource, vital to the everyday existence of millions of people, since they provide food, shelter, fuel, raw materials and many other benefits. The combined effects of an expanding global population and increasing consumption of resources, however, may be seriously endangering both the extent and future sustainability of the world's forests. About thirty chapters cover four main themes: the role of forests in the global carbon cycle; effects of past, present and future changes in forest land use; the role of forest management, products and biomass on carbon cycling, and socio-economic impacts.

Book excerpt: This book demonstrates in detail all phases of the 9th National Forest Inventory of Finland (1996–2003): the planning of the sampling design, measurements, estimation methods and results. The inventory knowledge accumulated during almost one hundred years is consolidated in the book. The purpose of the numerous examples of results is to demonstrate the diversity of the estimates and content of a national forest inventory. The most recent results include the assessment of the indicators describing the biodiversity of forests. The Finnish NFI has been and is a model for many countries worldwide. The methods and results of the book are set in the international context and are applicable globally. The book provides a valuable information source for countries, institutions and researchers planning own inventories as well as modifying the existing ones, or seeking the applicable definitions and estimation methods to use in their own inventories.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is to present a preliminary estimate of the potential contribution of forestry biomass to Canada's energy requirements to the year 2025. It begins with a review of forestry biomass conversion technologies, from which three reference cases have been formulated to facilitate discussion: direction conversion of wood to electricity in a 50-megawatt boiler; low-Btu gasification of wood combined with on-site utilization; and wood gasification combined with methanol production from the resulting synthesis gas. The report then estimates the total resource of forest biomass in Canada and evaluates sources of supply, including forest residues and energy plantations. It discusses principal uses for the different types of energy (steam, electricity, fuels) that can be produced from forest biomass, the factors affecting implementation of forest biomass energy technologies (including institutional constraints and environmental and social impacts), and the costs of energy produced by the three reference cases.

This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the demand for forest biomass information, new models have been developed to estimate biomass of forest stands and the more common vegetated, non-treed areas in Canada. The modeling approach is distinct for the kind of stand (or polygon) under consideration, and includes techniques that can be used to estimate all the above-ground biomass components, including stem wood, stem bark, branches, and foliage. Plot data supplied from forest inventory agencies throughout Canada formed the basis of developing empirical volume-to-biomass conversion models for forested (treed) land. For non-treed vegetated areas without volume, look-up tables containing mean biomass values were produced from published scientific studies about plant biomass production. Empirical models and look-up tables are presented with examples of how they can be used to estimate biomass for specific combinations of classifiers. Together, the models and tables provide a consistent and comprehensible set of tools that can be used to estimate biomass components for stands, vegetated areas, or broader groupings of both, in Canada.--Document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Rutherford has said that all science is either physics or stamp collecting. On that basis the study of forest biomass must be classified with stamp collecting and other such pleasurable pursuits. Japanese scientists have led the world, not only in collecting basic data, but in their attempts to systematise our knowledge of forest biomass. They have studied factors affecting dry matter production of forest trees in an attempt to approach underlying phYf'ical principles. This edition of Professor Satoo's book has been made possible the help of Dr John F. Hosner and the Virginia Poly technical Institute and State University who invited Dr Satoo to Blacksburg for three months in 1973 at about the time when he was in the final stages of preparing the Japanese version. Since then the explosion of world literature on forest biomass has continued to be fired by increasing shortages of timber supplies in many parts of the world as well as by a need to explore renewable sources of energy. In revising the original text I have attempted to maintain the input of Japanese work - much of which is not widely available outside Japan - and to update both the basic information and, where necessary, the conclusions to keep them in tune with current thinking. Those familiar with the Japanese original will find Chapter 3 largely rewritten on the basis of new work - much of which was initiated while Dr Satoo was in Blacksburg.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioenergy from Sustainable Forestry synthesizes information needed to design or implement sustainable forest management systems for production of biomass for energy in conjunction with other forest products. It is organized around the criteria for sustainable forest management: productivity, environment, social issues, economics, and legal and institutional framework. More than 25 international experts from 10 countries have brought together available ecological, physical, operational, social and economic information and identified gaps in knowledge related to biomass production and harvesting systems. This is the first time that such comprehensive information has been brought together under one cover, using an integrated, holistic approach. Guiding principles and state of the art knowledge are emphasized. The book will enable forest resource managers and planners to evaluate the ability of specific forest regions to sustainably meet bioenergy production demands.
