Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remanufacturing is a process by which a used product called a "core" is restored to like-new condition. The process involves disassembling the core down to its constituent used parts, differentiating between serviceable parts and scrap, and using a combination of serviceable parts and new parts to rebuild the product. A critical component of the process from an operational standpoint is the planning of core purchases, disassemblies, and new part purchases. These three unique inventory planning decisions have been scarcely addressed in the literature to date. This research presents and tests two alternative techniques for solving the remanufacturing inventory planning problem. The first is a deterministic network linear programming formulation with safety stock (ReNet), while the second is a stochastic formulation that explicitly accounts for uncertain yields (SIPR). The experiment is designed to test the relative performance of the two techniques and the effects of yield uncertainty and product characteristics on the solution cost. The results indicate that SIPR outperforms ReNet, particularly for higher levels of uncertainty. Further, product characteristics were shown to have a significant effect on both the relative performance and the solution cost. In particular, the expected yields of the highest-cost parts tend to drive the solution. Remanufacturing managers should therefore focus their resources on increasing the yields of high-cost parts through design and quality control initiatives. Since reducing yield uncertainty also significantly reduces cost, managers should further consider implementing procedures or investing capital to more accurately forecast yields.

Book excerpt: This third edition, which has been fully updated and now includes improved and extended explanations, is suitable as a core textbook as well as a source book for industry practitioners. It covers traditional approaches for forecasting, lot sizing, determination of safety stocks and reorder points, KANBAN policies and Material Requirements Planning. It also includes recent advances in inventory theory, for example, new techniques for multi-echelon inventory systems and Roundy's 98 percent approximation. The book also considers methods for coordinated replenishments of different items, and various practical issues in connection with industrial implementation. Other topics covered in Inventory Control include: alternative forecasting techniques, material on different stochastic demand processes and how they can be fitted to empirical data, generalized treatment of single-echelon periodic review systems, capacity constrained lot sizing, short sections on lateral transshipments and on remanufacturing, coordination and contracts. As noted, the explanations have been improved throughout the book and the text also includes problems, with solutions in an appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe hybrid manufacturing/remanufacturing systems with a long lead time for manufacturing and a short lead time for remanufacturing. We review the classes of inventory strategies for hybrid systems in the literature. These are all based on equal lead times. For systems with slow manufacturing and fast remanufacturing, we propose a new class. An extensive numerical experiment shows that the optimal strategy in the new class almost always performs better and often much better than the optimal strategies in all other classes.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we study hybrid manufacturing/remanufacturing inventory systems that produce a single product to satisfy random demands over a finite planning horizon. In each period, the firm receives random demand and random product returns. A serviceable product can be manufactured from raw materials or remanufactured from a returned product. Both operations face random capacities modeled as positively dependent random variables. The firm's objective is to minimize the expected total discounted cost over the planning horizon. We partially characterize the firm's optimal policy for the general model and completely characterize it for the models with deterministic manufacturing or remanufacturing capacity, by two increasing functions with slopes at most one. For the special case with unlimited manufacturing capacity, we further characterize the optimal policy and obtain additional insights. In particular, we connect this model with an auxiliary dual-sourcing inventory model and show that they have the same optimal policy under certain conditions. Finally, we conduct a numerical study to derive further insights into the effects of random capacities. Among others, we find that ignoring randomness of the manufacturing capacity often incurs significant cost to the firm while the cost of ignoring capacity correlation is negligible.

Book excerpt: Sustainability is a growing area of research in ecology, economics, environmental science, business, and cultural studies. Specifically, sustainable waste disposal and management is a growing concern as both solid and liquid wastes are rapidly expanding in direct correlation with population growth and improved economic conditions across regions. The Handbook of Research on Waste Management Techniques for Sustainability explores the topic of sustainable development in an era where domestic and municipal waste is becoming a concern for both human and environmental health. Highlighting a number of topics relating to pollution, green initiatives, and waste reduction in both the public and private sector, this research-based publication is designed for use by environmental scientists, business executives, researchers, graduate-level students, and policymakers seeking the latest information on sustainability in business, medicine, agriculture, and society.
