Book excerpt: This book examines the roles of sensors, physics–based attributes, classification methods, and performance evaluation in automatic target recognition. It details target classification from small mine–like objects to large tactical vehicles. Also explored in the book are invariants of sensor and transmission transformations, which are crucial in the development of low latency and computationally manageable automatic target recognition systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automatic target recognition (ATR) using radar commonly relies on modeling a target as a collection of point scattering centers, Features extracted from these scattering centers for input to a target classifier may be constructed that are invariant to translation and rotation, i.e., they are independent of the position and aspect angle of the target in the radar scene. Here an iterative approach for building effective scattering center models is developed, and the shape space of these models is investigated. Experimental results are obtained for three-dimensional scattering centers compressed to nineteen-dimensional feature sets, each consisting of the singular values of the matrix of scattering center locations augmented with the singular values of its second and third order monomial expansions. These feature sets are invariant to translation and rotation and permit%it the comparison of targets modeled by different numbers of scattering centers. A metric distance metric is used that effectively identifies targets under "real world" conditions that include noise and obscuration.

Book excerpt: The proposed idea is to enhance existing optical correlation based automatic target recognition (ATR) by introducing scale, translation, and rotation invariance (STRI). Previously, STRI was achieved by utilizing a library of matched filters corresponding to various positions of rotation and scale variation. We find that simple preprocessing can eliminate the need for the library since any STR changes in the input image can be nullified by bringing an input image to what we call its archetype. Physical Optics Corporation's (POC's) new approach includes a segmentation preprocessor (required to select any potential object of interest in an image of a realistic scene), POC's invariant preprocessor, and a standard optical correlator. This combination will greatly increase recognition speed and will simplify the recognition training procedure since only one in-plane position of the target will be needed to provide STRI recognition. The Phase I research described in this report opened a new approach to invariant ATR in which in-phase object position will no longer be of concern and, therefore, the best matched filter can be exploited to attain maximum confidence of identification. This should result in the development of hardware capable of operating in a real-time mode.

Book excerpt: This research is concerned with the development of a neural system for robust projective-invariant recognition of multiple targets which may be partially occluded in a cluttered background based on single gray-level images. For this purpose we have developed in the research a new method for affine-invariant iconic representation and recognition of targets using a novel set of Gabor/Fourier kernels with multi-dimensional indexing in the frequency domain. An affine-invariant representation of local image patches is extracted in the form of spectral signatures, by directly convolving the image with our novel configuration of these kernels. We achieved 100% correct recognition rates with a model library of 26 models over a wide range of viewing poses and distances (360 of rotation and tilt and 82 of slant and 4 octaves of scale). The system also maintains its 100% recognition rate in high levels of noise/clutter (up to -17 dB) and to resolution degradation (1:5 reduction). A novel method for representation and recognition of 3D Object/Targets based on 3D frequency domain representation was also developed and tested.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an overview of neural network technology and specifics of the self-organizing networks. An artificial neural network is described which recognizes objects regardless of their spatial orientation. This network is invariant to rotation, scale, and translation. Invariance is built into the network by introducing a unique set of features which were developed in-house. This overcame the two shortcomings of long training times and combinatorial explosion of terms often present in other networks. Preliminary results suggest that with further refinement and enhancement, the system described in this report will have the capability to reliably recognize targets under adverse environmental conditions.

Book excerpt: "This third edition of Automatic Target Recognition provides a roadmap for breakthrough ATR designs with increased intelligence, performance, and autonomy. Clear distinctions are made between military problems and comparable commercial Deep Learning problems. These considerations need to be understood by ATR engineers working in the defense industry as well as by their government customers. A reference design is provided for a next-generation ATR that can continuously learn from and adapt to its environment. The convergence of diverse forms of data on a single platform supports new capabilities and improved performance. This third edition broadens the notion of ATR to multisensor fusion. Radical continuous-learning ATR architectures, better integration of data sources, well-packaged sensors, and low-power teraflop chips will enable transformative military designs"--

Book excerpt: This thesis explores a new approach to the recognition of tactical targets using a multifunction laser radar sensor. Targets of interest were tanks, jeeps, and trucks. Doppler images were segmented and overlaided onto a relative range image. The resultant shapes were then transformed into a position, scale, and rotation invariant (PSRI) feature space. The classification processes used the correlation peak of the template PSRI space and the target PSRI space as features. Two classification methods were implemented: a classical distance measurement approach and a new biologically-based neural network multilayer perception architecture. Both methods demonstrated classification rates near 100% with a true rotation invariance demonstrated up to 20 degrees. Neural networks were shown to have a distinct advantage in a robust environment and when a figure of merit criteria was applied. A space domain correlation was developed using local normalization and multistage processing to locate and classify targets in high clutter and with partially occluded targets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen dramatic progress in shape recognition algorithms applied to ever-growing image databases. They have been applied to image stitching, stereo vision, image mosaics, solid object recognition and video or web image retrieval. More fundamentally, the ability of humans and animals to detect and recognize shapes is one of the enigmas of perception. The book describes a complete method that starts from a query image and an image database and yields a list of the images in the database containing shapes present in the query image. A false alarm number is associated to each detection. Many experiments will show that familiar simple shapes or images can reliably be identified with false alarm numbers ranging from 10-5 to less than 10-300. Technically speaking, there are two main issues. The first is extracting invariant shape descriptors from digital images. Indeed, a shape can be seen from various angles and distances and in various lights.

Book excerpt: Recently, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of sensors in the non-visible bands. As a result, there is a need for existing computer vision methods and algorithms to be adapted for use with non-visible sensors, or for the development of completely new methods and systems. Computer Vision Beyond the Visible Spectrum is the first book to bring together state-of-the-art work in this area. It presents new & pioneering research across the electromagnetic spectrum in the military, commercial, and medical domains. By providing a detailed examination of each of these areas, it focuses on the development of state-of-the-art algorithms and looks at how they can be used to solve existing & new challenges within computer vision. Essential reading for academics & industrial researchers working in the area of computer vision, image processing, and medical imaging, it will also be useful background reading for advanced undergraduate & postgraduate students.
