Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Steps in Sight-Singing Ir is slowly beginning to be recognised that to be unable to read a single line of music at sight is, after all, rather a sign of ignorance. This is encouraging, and should be made the most of by all who have at heart the spread of musical education, and the consequent advancement of music in this country. Book excerpt: "...Developing the "mind's ear"--the ability to imagine how music sounds without first playing it on an instrument--is essential to any musician and sight singing (in conjunction with ear training and other studies in musicianship) is invaluable in reaching this fundamental goal...[This book has an] abundance of meticulously organized melodies drawn from the literature of composed music and a wide range of the world's folk music...Each chapter methodically introduces elements one at a time, steadily increasing in difficulty while providing a musically meaningful framework around which students can hone their skills..."--preface.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Studies in Sight Singing: Selected From Second Year Music and Third Year Music of the Hollis Dann Music Course The teacher should not forget that this tone and rhythm study is only one side of the work. The development which comes from the singing of songs is vitally important. Without this, the training in music is one-sided and mechanical. Only through the proper singing of suitable songs will a love and appreciation of the beauti ful in music be awakened and cultivated. It is also by means of song that the rhythmic and tonal sense is quickened and developed. It is all-important that correct habits of tone production be acquired during the first year in school, and that the head tone which is so delightful in children's singing, shall be preserved and not allowed to deteriorate. To attain this vitally important result, the teacher must maintain the same standard in all the singing. The tone quality should be just as good for the singing of the sight reading material as for the rote songs. The teacher must have the ability to discriminate between good and bad tone production, and the Skill to eliminate bad tonal conditions. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn the basics of sight singing in 7 days with this innovative book! Sight Singing for Beginners Level I is a comprehensive, and progressive audio course for group or self study. It is an effective method in a variety of situations, including self-study, private music lessons, for singers in school, college, church and community choirs. This course is a compact introduction to the basics of sight singing and adds more complicated elements one by one. There are sight singing examples and exercises used in each chapter with a recorded vocal example to check yourself. To listen to a selected exercise, click on the Hear button on supported devices, or visit goo.gl/L9ezwA online. You can hear the example with a metronome to help you understand the rhythm. The note set, which is all the notes used in the example, is given above each example block. When you sing, try to grasp an entire phrase as a musical entity avoiding note to note singing. You should practice a melody several times, if necessary, until ease and fluency are achieved. It is helpful to beat time as you sing, or you may use standard conducting patterns. This book recommends singing in Solfege (fixed Do) system for sight singing music (any other system will work as well). The system applies standard syllables to the notes (Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Si Do). Singing with solfege syllables makes it easier to hear and remember the sound of intervals and facilitates developing perfect pitch. In this system, the pitch C is always Do. Knowing how to read music will give you the confidence you need to improve as a singer/musician. Give yourself time to learn to sight sing. It takes a lot of practice and patience to develop a strong foundation in reading rhythms and sight singing melodies."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Music Reader: A Course of Exercises in the Elements of Vocal Music and Sight-Singing, With Choice Rote Songs for the Use of the Youngest Pupils in Schools and Families Exercises on pages 44 and 45 are intended as specimens. It would greatly add to the interest in musical instruction, both on the part of the teacher and scholars, if the former should copy similar exercises from the many excellent books now published. The exercises from Dr. Mainzer, on pages 46 - 53, will require careful study. We would recommend the use of the syllables, do, Rn, MI, etc., with these exercises. The additional songs for rote-singing are printed without any regard to order as to difficulty. The teacher will select such as she deems best adapted to her pupils. They are not to be sung by note, as most of them are beyond the ability Of the children to analyze, both in their melodic and rhythmical structure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SIGHT-SINGING is a modern ear training system, which makes use of solfège – undeniably the oldest and most recognized sight-reading method. By using this system, you will learn to hear and sing a melody line, simply by reading the notes. The SIGHT-SINGING (vol. 1-3) books consist of more than 700 melodies and exercises. As you progress through the exercises, the difficulty will increase steadily. In this book (vol, 2), we will learn to master the major scale. In other words, we will practice the well-known syllables: do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do. If you are new to the SIGHT-SINGING system and experience difficulty with some of the exercises, you should start with SIGHT-SINGING vol. 1. It will give you the tools you need for this book.
