Secretary of a Literary Society started for the encouragement of those who cared for poetry and wished to improve their acquaintance with it, he thought that it would greatly add to the usefulness of the friendly afternoon meetings in one another's houses if each first reading of a Poet's works were prefaced by some account of the Poet himself, his life and circumstances, and the history of his work. These accounts are in most cases a digest of what had been already published by various writers, with such added criticism as seemed likely to be of use or interest. And they are usually short, as the writer always felt that he was somewhat tyrannically taking up the time of the Members whose object was to read or listen to the poems selected and discuss them afterwards. In preparing the papers for the Press they have been in some instances enlarged and poems have been inserted which at the Meetings were read after the paper. There are not many things one would sooner hear a boy, in whom one was interested, praised for than a love of poetry; though one would wish also, of course, that he should find from his reading so much at least of wisdom as, with honest Dogberry, to 'give God thanks and make no boast of it.' But as I wondered, for I had known something of the boy, whether the promise thus foreshadowed had been or was ever to be realised, I began to ask myself why it was that this fondness for poetry should be so rare a quality in boyhood as to deserve this particular record. We sometimes express another side of the same truth by saying that poetry is "universal," meaning that it cares nothing for superficial and transient fashions, but is interested only "in man, in nature, and in human life," in their permanent elements. This first epithet seems to fix beyond dispute an indispensable quality of all poetry. If a writer is insincere, or if he is conventional and fashionable, we are sure, whatever his airs and graces, that he is no poet. By "sensuous" it is probable that Milton meant what, in more technical language, we should describe as "concrete."
