Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1900, this is the second of two volumes of the magnum opus from pioneer assyriologist and linguist Rev. Archibald Sayce and continues directly from the first, providing an introduction to linguistic roots, inflectional families of speech, agglutinative, incorporating, polysynthetic and isolating languages, comparative mythology, the science of religion, the origin of language and the relation of language to ethnology, logic and education. In it, Sayce was the first to emphasize the principle of partial assimilation and the linguistic principle of analogy. This 4th edition, ten years after the first, reflected on the limitations of science revealed since 1890, in an era when languages, like other humanities subjects, still idealised scientific approaches. Archibald Henry Sayce was one of the greatest comparative linguists of the time, being proficient in Accadian, Arabic, Cuneiform, Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Hebrew, Hittite, Japanese, Latin, Persian, Phoenician, Sanscrit and Sumerian. He had a good knowledge of every Semitic and Indo-European language and could write good prose in at least twenty languages. Sayce's first major contribution to scholarship was a highly significant translation of an Accadian seal, a 'bilingual text' from which to translate cuneiform, similar to the Rosetta Stone. Here then, no doubt, the reader learns from a master of comparative linguistics.

This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Principles of the Structure of Language, Vol. 1 of 2 The science of language contains two parts which are distinct from each other, the science of etymology and the science of grammar. The science of etymology investigates the general principles of the production and successive changes of the elements of which language consists, the laws of their expressiveness whereby they were connected in their original form with the elements of thought, and the laws of their subsequent alterations in utterance and in meaning. The science of grammar investigates the general principles of the structure of language, the causes which have determined the various modes of breaking expression into parts, and of putting the parts together in discourse, that prevail amongst the various races of mankind. As a contribution to the former branch of the science of language, the author of this work hopes to publish, when he has revised it, a classification which he has made of indo-european roots according to the general principles of expressiveness whereby they seem to have conveyed their fundamental meanings. And in the present publica tion he considers the influences which determine varieties of utterance among the various races. But with the exception of the latter, he is concerned here only with the second part of the science of language and he would first briefly explain his method. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Language In accordance with this twofold aim, Ihave limited myself to a presentation of the accepted doctrine, not even avoiding well-used standard examples. In a few places I have spoken of views that cannot claim more than probability, of hypotheses, and of problems yet to be solved, but I have done this explicitly and only be cause I think it fitting to indicate the direction in which our study is at present tending. Consequently the matter here presented is by no means my own, but rather the property of all students of language. It will be found in fuller form and with bibliographic support in the books mentioned in Chapter Ten, and these books I may there fore name as my more immediate It will be apparent, especially, that I depend for my psychology, general and linguistic, entirely on Wundt; I can only hope that I have not misrepresented his doctrine. The day is past when students of mental sciences could draw on their own fancy or on 'popular psychology' for their views of mental occurrence. L. B. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonder of Words: An Introduction to Language for Everyman Among the very first books that I really owned - bought with pennies hard-earned on the streets as a newsboy - are four that, midway through high school, I devoured at once with passionate indigestion. I still have them, marked and back-broken from much rereading. They are Max Miiller's Lectures on the Science of Language, in two volumes, and William Whitney's Life and Growth of Language and Lan guage and the Study of Language. They were, and in a de gree they remain, for all the corrections that later investiga tion has made, among the most exciting volumes, in any genre, that I have read in any language. There are books whose covers are as portals that open upon new worlds. The scientific rigors Of Jespersen, Sapir, and their confreres are hardly for beginners; but they represent a goal towards which all beginners should aspire.
