Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the New Testament: The Collection of the Four Gospels and the Gospel of St. Matthew The first and strictly preliminary chapter of this second volume will not deal with the composition of our gospels. I Shall confine myself to inquire how and when the group, hitherto closed and inseparable, Of these four writings was formed, which we shall have thereafter to study separately. In the first volume of this work I had not to strike out a new path, for studies pursued during a long series of years had led me to convictions very much in accordance with the views generally admitted on the composition, the date, and the chronological order of the thirteen epistles of St. Paul which I regard as authentic. Book excerpt: The publication of the King James version of the Bible, translated between 1603 and 1611, coincided with an extraordinary flowering of English literature and is universally acknowledged as the greatest influence on English-language literature in history. Now, world-class literary writers introduce the book of the King James Bible in a series of beautifully designed, small-format volumes. The introducers' passionate, provocative, and personal engagements with the spirituality and the language of the text make the Bible come alive as a stunning work of literature and remind us of its overwhelming contemporary relevance.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ... will to the end have this faith in the divine promises (Luke xviii. 1--8). It is the time of that long waiting of which Jesus speaks in Mark (xiii. 35) and Luke (xii. 38), which begins in the evening, continues till midnight, is prolonged till the cock-crowing and even perhaps till the morning, when all hope of seeing the Master arrive will seem lost. Is it not, lastly, the time needed in order that the seed may become a tree whose branches shelter the peoples, and that the leaven may pervade the whole of human life? Such is the sum of the facts, each of longer or less duration, which, according to the words of Jesus scattered in our Synoptics, must be placed between His departure and His return, and consequently take place alongside of this third part of the discourse that we are considering. It is then a very grave error to pass lightly over these few verses, that in reality embrace the whole period of the life of the Church, in the actual absence of the Lord, the interval called by Luke by this striking name: the times of the Gentiles (Kaipol edvav). "Jerusalem," he says (xxi. 24), " shall be trodden down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled." This expression cannot denote the time of the domination of the Gentiles, for the phrase would be tautological: the Gentiles will dominate the Holy Land, as long as it will be given them to dominate it! It assumes, on the other hand, its full meaning if it be explained by the two parallel sayings (Matt. xxi. 41 'and 43): "He will let his vineyard to other husbandmen, who will render him the fruits in their seasons (ev rots Kaipols avr&v).... The kingdom will be taken from you, and given to a nation rendering the fruits thereof." The word Katp6s denotes a favourable...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging, scholarly, and theologically honest, this introductory textbook will be welcomed by students and professors alike. What do we really know about Jesus and how do we know it? Jesus in the Gospels and Acts: Introducing the New Testament explores these questions from the perspective of the New Testament--specifically the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, as well as the extracanonical gospels. Using language and concepts considerate of a religiously diverse undergraduate audience, the author explores issues of authorship, historicity, culture, and theology. Features include: "Check Your Reading" questions check the students' basic comprehension. "Do You Have the Basics?" puzzles check for comprehension through crosswords, word finds, sequencing, and matching activities. "Questions for Reflection" challenge the students to think more deeply about the reading's meaning and the implications for us today. "This book focuses on the central figure of the Christian Scriptures: Jesus. Arguably, no other figure in history has had more influence in shaping many of the religious and cultural norms in the world today. Whether you belong to a specific faith tradition or none at all, possessing a working knowledge of Jesus and the Gospels is important for religious, historical, and cultural literacy." --from the author's introduction

This book was released on 2002-09-30 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume One: The Gospels and Acts With typical thoroughness, Dr. Hiebert has produced this volume of his New Testament introductions. Though not a commentary on the gospels and Acts, the book presents their message along with a discussion of such questions as authorship, composition, and the Synoptic problem. Practical suggestions on how to study these five books are included. The bibliographies and annotated book lists are are extremely helpful for pastors, teachers, and laymen. Volume Two: The Pauline Epistles This is a detailed introduction to all of Paul's writings - epistles that without question are among the most precious treasures of the Christian church. Dr. Hiebert discusses the historical circumstances of their writing, deals with ethical problems, and provides helpful general information on the content and nature of the books themselves. Discussed in general and separately, these epistles are treated in chronological order, with emphasis on their eschatology, soteriology, Christology, or ecclesiology.
