Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beethoven’s piano sonatas form one of the most important collections of works in the whole history of music. Spanning several decades of his life as a composer, the sonatas soon came to be seen as the first body of substantial serious works for piano suited to performance in large concert halls seating hundreds of people. In this comprehensive and authoritative guide, Charles Rosen places the works in context and provides an understanding of the formal principles involved in interpreting and performing this unique repertoire, covering such aspects as sonata form, phrasing, and tempo, as well as the use of pedal and trills. In the second part of his book, he looks at the sonatas individually, from the earliest works of the 1790s through the sonatas of Beethoven’s youthful popularity of the early 1800s, the subsequent years of mastery, the years of stress (1812†“1817), and the last three sonatas of the 1820s. Composed as much for private music-making as public recital, Beethoven’s sonatas have long formed a bridge between the worlds of the salon and the concert hall. For today’s audience, Rosen has written a guide that brings out the gravity, passion, and humor of these works and will enrich the appreciation of a wide range of readers, whether listeners, amateur musicians, or professional pianists. The book includes a CD of Rosen performing extracts from several of the sonatas, illustrating points made in the text.

(6) Columns for Discount on Purchases and Discount on Notes on the same side of the Cash Book; (c) Columns for Discount on Sales and Cash Sales on the debit side of the Cash Book; (d) Departmental columns in the Sales Book and in the Purchase Book. Controlling Accounts.--The addition of special columns in books of original entry makes possible the keeping of Controlling Accounts. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. These summary accounts, respectively, displace individual customers' and creditors' accounts in the Ledger. The customers' accounts are then segregated in another book called the Sales Ledger or Customers' Ledger, while the creditors' accounts are kept in the Purchase or Creditors' Ledger. The original Ledger, now much reduced in size, is called the General Ledger. The Trial Balance now refers to the accounts in the General Ledger. It is evident that the task of taking a Trial Balance is greatly simplified because so many fewer accounts are involved. A Schedule of Accounts Receivable is then prepared, consisting of the balances found in the Sales Ledger, and its total must agree with the balance of the Accounts Receivable account shown in the Trial Balance. A similar Schedule of Accounts Payable, made up of all the balances in the Purchase Ledger, is prepared, and it must agree with the balance of the Accounts Payable account of the General Ledger." The Balance Sheet.--In the more elementary part of the text, the student learned how to prepare a Statement of Assets and Liabilities for the purpose of disclosing the net capital of an enterprise. In the present chapter he was shown how to prepare a similar statement, the Balance Sheet. For all practical...

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ...How, then, is the first sentence to be understood? and how the second, coming out of the first? How does the second sentence appear in its transformations in the second part? How can the character of each of these five sentences be perceived and brought into varied functions and relationships? and what change in the tone color of interpretation does the transformation of these sentences demand? The second example is found in the first Allegro of the E-flat major Sonata, Op. 7, a movement which to the unfamiliar glance is by no means so transparent as the one cited before. The Allegro starts out without introduction. The principal theme. B announces itself and its motive (A) plainly enough, and the latter remains recognizable even in its transformation (B). Less clear to an unfamiliar eye might be the following passage, until, after a long delay on the bass tone, F, a second sentence (C) clearly presents itself, after the completion of which a third (D), then in the new key (C major) a fourth (E), 3=3 and again, in B-flat major, a fifth sentence (F) appears. Only the beginnings will be cited. The connoisseur of form would designate these four sentences as side themes. Still two more distinctly distinguishable sentences close the first part; they might be called the closing themes. We have, then, before us, not counting the middle members, seven different sentences. What is the meaning of each? How may they be distinguished? How are they united into a perfect whole, and how do they work themselves out? The principal theme (Hauptsatz), or, rather, only its motive (A), opens the second part. It soon yields, however, to the motive of the closing theme (Schlussatz), and returns again, in order to form itself into a new sentence (the eighth)....
