It has a distinctive sound and is played with a small plectrum made of wood or tortoise shell. The body of the tár is traditionally carved from a single piece of wood, and its neck has 25 strings arranged in five groups of five. Four of the five groups are tuned in unison, while the fifth group is tuned in octaves. The tár has historically been used in a variety of musical genres, ranging from classical Persian music to folk and popular music in Azerbaijan. There are several variations of the tár, including the Azerbaijani tár, which has a slightly different shape and tuning than the Persian tár. Similarly, the Central Asian dotar is a two-stringed version of the instrument. The tár has become known worldwide, and it is now played in Western classical concerts and world music concerts. The instrument originated in Central Asia, and it is believed to have been derived from an earlier instrument known as the dombra. The tár has become an integral part of the culture and music of Iran, Azerbaijan, and Central Asia, with many famous musicians having played the instrument over the centuries.

Book excerpt: Submariners are a tight knit group of men bound together by training and experience, and with a language all their own. That language is perhaps a little vulgar, but never intentionally demeaning, and a little irreverent but still worldly. This work is an attempt to preserve and explain some of these curious guys who so proudly wear a shiny metal pin that looks like a strange pair of fish on their left breast. This process of accumulating this new language begins in Boot Camp, and is added to with every change of duty station the sailor undergoes. It is heard aboard the boats and, unknowingly, by family members who can't understand terms like head, deck, and overhead, and who think SOS is a distress signal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Tar's Story examines the autobiographies and memoirs of antebellum American sailors to explore contested meanings of manhood and nationalism in the early republic. It is the first study to use various kinds of institutional sources, including crew lists, ships' logs, impressment records, to document the stories sailors told. It focuses on how mariner authors remembered/interpreted various events and experiences, including the War of 1812, the Haitian Revolution, South America's wars of independence, British impressment, flogging on the high seas, roistering, and religious conversion. This book straddles different fields of scholarship and suggests how their concerns intersect or resonate with each other: the history of print culture, the study of autobiographical writing, and the historiography of seafaring life and of masculinity in antebellum America.
