Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proteins are essential to life, having a vital role in all living organisms. They are the ultimate micro machines: some are building blocks, joining with other substances to make the cells from which we are all formed. Some are catalysts, speeding up essential biochemical reactions to keep our cells alive. Yet others help cells to communicate, to move, and to build up the complex mix of tissues that make up our bodies. Introduction to Protein Science provides a broad ranging introduction to the contemporary study of proteins suitable for students on biosciences degrees internationally. Starting by describing the structure of proteins and how these structures can be studied, the book goes on to illustrate the wide range of functions that proteins have, showing how the shape of a protein is intimately linked to the function that it has. The book then describes how new experimental and computational techniques are helping us to predict a protein s structure and function, and how this is paving the way for us to design new proteins with specific characteristics, with exciting implications in areas such as drug design. Written by Arthur Lesk, the author of the highly successful Introduc

Book Synopsis The Physical Foundation of Protein Architecture by : Nobuhiko Saito
Download or read book The Physical Foundation of Protein Architecture written by Nobuhiko Saito and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A protein requires its own three-dimensional structure for its biological activity. If a chemical agent is added, the biological activity is lost, and the three dimensional structure is destroyed to become a random coil state. But when the chemical agent is removed, the biological activity is recovered, implying that the random coil state turns back into the original complex structure spontaneously. This is an astonishing event. The Physical Foundation of Protein Architecture is intended to solve this mystery from the physicochemical basis by elucidating the mechanism of various processes in protein folding. The main features of protein folding are shown to be described by the island model with long range hydrophobic interaction which is capable of finding the specific residue, and the lampshade criterion for disulfide bonding. Various proteins with known structure are refolded, with the purpose of uncovering the mechanism of protein folding. In addition, ab initio method for predicting protein structure from its amino acid sequence is proposed.

Book Synopsis Protein Stability and Folding by : Wolfgang Pfeil
Download or read book Protein Stability and Folding written by Wolfgang Pfeil and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protein folding remains one of the most exclusive problems of modern biochemistry. Structure analysis has given access to the wealth of the molecular architecture of pro teins. As architecture needs static calculations, protein structure is always related to thermodynamic factors that govern folding and stability of a particular folded protein over the non-organized polypeptide chain. During the past decades a huge amount of thermodynamic data related to protein folding and stability has been accumulated. The data are certainly of importance in dechiffring the protein folding problem. At the same time, the data can guide the con struction of modified and newly synthesized proteins with properties optimized for particular application. The intention of this book is a generation of a data collection which makes the vast amount of present data accessible for multidisciplinary research where chemistry, phy sics, biology, and medicine are involved and also pharmaceutical and food research and technology. It took several years to compile all the data and the author wishes to thank everyone who provided data, ideas or even unpublished results. The author is, in particular, indebted to Prof. Wadso (Lund, Sweden) and IUPAC's Steering Committee on Bio physical Chemistry. Furthermore, support by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschafi (INK 16 AI-I) is acknowledged.

Download or read book Protein Science written by Arthur Lesk and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written primarily for students embarking on an undergraduate bioscience degree, this primer introduces students to the essential topics in protein science clearly and concisely by describing the basic chemical structure of proteins, the factors that stabilize protein structures, proteinfunction, and protein evolution. It begins by placing proteins in their general context in life. They are synthesized as amino-acid sequences encoded in genomes, and fold spontaneously to three-dimensional structures. This is the point where life makes the tremendous leap from the one-dimensional world of genome and amino-acidsequences, to the three-dimensional world of protein structures - indeed, the world which we inhabit.Protein Science prepares readers for later more advanced study of the subject, but will also leave readers who do not go on to such advanced study with a satisfying grasp of the essentials of the subject.Protein Science is supported by online resources and is available for students and institutions to purchase in a variety of formats. The e-book offers a mobile experience and convenient access along with functionality tools, navigation features and links that offer extra learning support: www.oxfordtextbooks.co.uk/ebooksThe online resources include:For students:- Self-test questions- Animations of protein structures introduced in the textFor registered adopters of the book:DT Figures from the book, available to download
Book Synopsis Protein–Protein Interaction Regulators by : Siddhartha Roy
Download or read book Protein–Protein Interaction Regulators written by Siddhartha Roy and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New genomic information has revealed the crucial role that protein-protein interactions (PPIs) play in regulating numerous cellular functions. Aberrant forms of these interactions are common in numerous diseases and thus PPIs have emerged as a vast class of critical drug targets. Despite the importance of PPIs in biology, it has been extremely challenging to convert targets into therapeutics and targeting PPIs had long been considered a very difficult task. However, over the past decade the field has advanced with increasing growth in the number of successful PPI regulators. Protein-Protein Interaction Regulators surveys the latest advances in the structural understanding of PPIs as well as recent developments in modulator discovery.
