Book excerpt: Using the computer to eliminate rote computation and facilitate learning, this book inspires and motivates readers to learn statistics by showing them its great practical importance to their careers. In every chapter, the authors include an ample number of examples and vignettes that illustrate and emphasize skills that enable students to interpret data effectively and to convert data into usable information. This approach enhances students' abilities to make better decisions, thus preparing them to exert greater influence in their future careers. To reinforce the idea that statistics is the linkage that transforms data into useful information, thereby enhancing planning and decision making, almost every numbered example includes introductory language that articulates the importance of the illustration in a functional area of business. The authors use Microsoft Excel, MINITAB, and JMP IN statistical software to execute statistical methods--presenting computer outputs and interpretation first; then illustrating the method using statistical tables. In addition, to promote the learning of fundamentals, the authors also take the users through many methods step-by-step, using examples with very small data sets. Chapter appendices provide clear, detailed instructions on the use of Excel, MINITAB, and JMP IN. Users are not just purchasing a textbook--every new copy of the book is packaged with a student software and data disk. This disk contains Data Analysis Plus Add-ins for Microsoft Excel, as well as all the data sets used in the book formatted for Excel, MINITAB, JMP IN, and ASCII. In addition to the many examples and exercises they included in the First Edition, the authors add approximately 120 exercises based on published articles in academic journals, the popular media, or widely available sources of data. Many of these exercises contain large data sets, and many are revisited is subsequent chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do we need yet another textbook on business fundamentals when every publishing house has stacks of such books ready for sale? No, we do not need another standard textbook. What we need is a new kind of teaching tool that at once accommodates the modern-day classroom and exposes new century students to the contemporary world of global capitalism in which today’s businesses operate. In primer form, Dr. Patrice Flynn clarifies the functional areas of business, a term used to describe what every businessperson needs to understand to be successful, from entrepreneurship to small business development, legal structure, going global, finance, big data, marketing, management, and more. This primer demonstrates how a master teacher teaches new century students, thus giving supremacy to pedagogy along with rigorous content. The primer can be used with both business students and the growing number of nonbusiness students interested in learning how business works before entering the world of work. Every student will come away not only with a sense of the business areas that pique their interest but also with a deeper understanding of business from which to craft next career steps.

Book excerpt: Transform your entire organization, not just a part of it. Take a modern look now that the world is focusing on business agility rather than thinking about team-level or even scaled Agile. Many people and businesses believe that “doing Agile” will solve all their business and organizational problems. The truth is that “doing Agile”, especially team-level agility, is not the same as being an agile organization. Authors Doug Dockery and Laureen Knudsen share their years of experience in transforming corporations and organizations to successfully compete and win in today’s fast-paced markets. Using proven techniques and stories of actual experiences in a multitude of organizations, Doug and Laureen relate what it takes to successfully transform your organization, as well as how to tell if your transformation is working. Modern Business Management details what you need to know to transform your business to deliver value and thrive. Coverage includes: What Agile means to an executive and the benefits you should be seeing The top failure modes and why so many transformations fail A framework for success, including an operational framework and a transformation framework How big data internal to a company is needed to successfully run a world-wide corporation today The definition of a modern business and what it looks like What You’ll learn Understand why businesses are not getting the benefits out of their current Agile transformation Follow the process that organizations need to go through to succeed See how C-level executives can benefit from Agile practices Know how to succeed where others are failing Discover how to keep up with a constantly disrupted and ever-changing market Who This Book Is For Management and executives in corporations from the director level to the C-level
