Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Life Insurance in the United States to 1870: With an Introduction to Its Development Abroad In the early history Of life insurance four primary stages of development may be distinguished. The first of these may be called the period Of experiment. It extends from the earliest beginnings down to the year 1700. During this time the prac tice Of keeping mortality records originated, and the funda mental laws Of probability were evolved and applied to the valuation of human life. Underwriting was done by indivi duals, and toward the end Of the period some distribution Of risk was accomplished by the insurers, since it became custom ary to accept but a small portion of each one of a number of separate hazards. The second stage may be designated the speculative assessment period.' It extends from 1700 to 1721, and is distinguished by the fact that assessment associations Of a highly speculative nature were formed for effecting life insurance. The third period, from 1721 to 1760, may be termed the era of scientific progress, since it is characterized by the progress made in the science of life contingencies. The fourth and last epoch, from 1760 to 1800, is One in which the advent of modern life insurance occurred. It was during this time that insurance for the whole of life on an annual level premium basis, and with a reserve fund to meet liabilities in creasing with advancing age, was put into practical operation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Insurance Bill: With an Introduction and Notes The long expected and much talked of Sickness Insurance Bill has at last, after numerous postponements, been introduced into the House of Commons, and I do not think it is overstating the case to say that the principle of State-help to insurance contained in the Bill has been warmly approved and welcomed by all parties in the State. Unionists as well as Radicals have vied with each other in their welcome and appreciation of this principle of the measure, and it is on points of detail and administration that criticism has been directed. The Bill is divided into two - parts the first dealing I with sickness under the comprehensive name of "National Health Insurance," and the second with "Unemployment Insurance." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The ABC of Life Insurance TO explain and illustrate some of the fundamental and elementary principles of Life Insurance so simply that they can readily be understood by men who have not been specially trained as mathematicians, or have not had their attention particularly directed to the theory and mathe maties of Life Insurance, is the aim of this little book. For those who already possess this elementary knowledge, there are many excellent hand-books which carry the dis cussion much further, and cover the entire subject in the ablest and most satisfactory manner. But as an intro duction to these, a beginning, an easy lesson, it is hoped that the following pages will have their use. They owe their existence to the impossibility of finding among the text-books already published, anything which seemed exactly adapted to this purpose. C. E. W. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Law of Insurance It will be found to embrace the whole Insurance law of Canada. On fire, marine, and life insurance, every reported Canadian case is given; but as to marine and life insurance, I do not pretend that my work is complete. To these two branches of insurance law I have contributed all that is to be found in the Canadian reports. On marine insurance I have given all Canadian cases in the form of a digest; and as to life insurance, most of the cases will be found interspersed throughout the work. On fire insar rance alone I have sought to make the work complete. In addition to the Canadian cases, the work contains all English and a selection from the American cases. On this branch of insurance law I trust the work will be found more useful to the Canadian reader than any foreign production. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Insurance, Volume Two: Fire is a work authored by W.F. Gephart, and is a detailed analysis of insurance coverage at the beginning of the 20th century. Gephart's purpose in writing Principles of Insurance was to create a text about insurance coverage that was accessible to the students, teachers, and colleges of the United States. In his preface, the author bemoans the lack of available literature on the subject, stating that while a wealth of information does exist, it is data that is primarily closely guarded by insurance companies. This volume, the second in a two-volume set, thus examines the basics of insurance coverage as it relates to fire. The book is divided into chapters, each of which discusses a specific aspect of insurance. The author begins the work with an examination of the historical development of fire insurance, before delving into topics such as the economics of fire insurance, hazards in fire insurance, the limitations of liability and distribution, the relationship between the state and insurance, and several more. Principles of Insurance: Fire is a thorough overview of the insurance industry and its handling of cases involving fire. Gephart expertly weaves practical examples throughout the text to better illuminate the topics discussed. The book is well written, and the author's textbook-style approach to the subject matter is appropriate. While the insurance industry has evolved significantly since this book's initial publication, a great deal of the information in this text is still of value to the modern reader. Individuals interested in a textbook about insurance, specifically as it relates to incidences of fire, will find W.F. Gephart's Principles of Insurance, Volume Two: Fire to be a worthwhile read.
