Book excerpt: Grenada is a small island nation located in the southeastern Caribbean Sea, lying north of Trinidad and Tobago, and south of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The country is made up of three islands, namely Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique. Grenada has an area of approximately 348 square kilometers and a population of around 112,000 residents. The capital city of the country is St. George's, which is located on the southwestern coast of Grenada. The history of Grenada can be traced back to the arrival of the Carib Indians, who traveled from South America and settled on the islands around 800 AD. In the late 15th century, the Spanish arrived on the island, but they never fully colonized it due to fierce resistance from the Caribs. The French and British also had interest in the island and established settlements there. Grenada gained independence from the British in 1974, and it is now a democratic, multi-party state that operates under a parliamentary system of government. The economy of the country is largely based on agriculture, particularly the production of cocoa and nutmeg, as well as tourism.

Book excerpt: On 19 October 1983, the Caribbean island of Grenada captured international headlines when revolutionary Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and many of his colleagues were killed, in a confrontation resulting in American intervention. This text examines past turmoil in Grenada by focusing on six episodes in the island`s history, including: the European destruction of the first Amerindian inhabitants; the rebellion against the rule of the French and then the British colonialists; the disgrace of Gairy; and the demise of Maurice Bishop and the PRG. The book shows how the socio-economic and political background to each conflict holds the key to its resolution and asks whether Grenadians can now become masters of their own destiny, rather than subject to external agencies and groups.

Book excerpt: This report presents information on the Grenada tuna fisheries, the components and results of the pre-assessment itself, and recommendations to improve the fisheries’ status in relation to the Marine Stewardship Council Fisheries Standard. Grenada’s yellowfin and bigeye tuna fisheries were assessed against the MSC standard for sustainable fisheries. This standard encompasses three distinct principles: Principle 1 –sustainability of the stocks; Principle 2 – ecosystem impacts; and Principle 3 – effective management. Each Principle in turn comprises a set of performance indicators (PI), of which there are 28 in total. Overall, the pre-assessment identified a significant number of shortcomings that would currently preclude the fishery from achieving conformity with the MSC Fisheries Standard.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grenada Revolution in the Caribbean Present: Operation Urgent Memory is the first scholarly book from the humanities on the subject of the Grenada Revolution and the US intervention. It is simultaneously a critique, tribute, and memorial. It argues that in both its making and its fall, the 1979-1983 Revolution was a transnational event that deeply impacted politics and culture across the Caribbean and its diaspora during its life and in the decades since its fall. Drawing together studies of landscape, memorials, literature, music, painting, photographs, film and TV, cartoons, memorabilia traded on e-bay, interviews, everyday life, and government, journalistic, and scholarly accounts, the book assembles and analyzes an archive of divergent memories. In an analysis that is relevant to all micro-states, the book reflects on how Grenada's small size shapes memory, political and poetic practice, and efforts at reconciliation.
