Book Synopsis An Introduction to Gregorian Chant by : Richard L. Crocker
Download or read book An Introduction to Gregorian Chant written by Richard L. Crocker and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard L. Crocker offers in this book and its accompanying compact disc an introduction to the history and meaning of the Gregorian chant. He explains how Gregorian chant began, what functions and meanings it had over time, who heard it and where, and how it was composed, learned, written down and handed on. Crocker explains Gregorian chant and its functions within modern catholic liturgy as well as its position outside this liturgy, where the modern listener may hear it just as music. He describes the origins of the chant in the early Middle Ages, details its medieval development and use, and considers how it survived without, and later with, musical notation. The author probes the paradoxical position of the chant in monastic life -- serving as an expression of liturgical fellowship on the one hand and as the medium of solitary mystic ascent on the other. The book also includes a detailed commentary on each of twenty-six complete chants performed by the Orlando Consort and by the author on the accompanying compact disc. --From publisher's description.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Pentatonicism from the Eighteenth Century to Debussy by : Jeremy Day-O'Connell
Download or read book Pentatonicism from the Eighteenth Century to Debussy written by Jeremy Day-O'Connell and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A generously illustrated examination of pentatonic ("black-key scale") techniques in the context of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Western art-music. Pentatonicism from the Eighteenth Century to Debussy offers the first comprehensive account of a widely recognized aspect of music history: the increasing use of pentatonic ("black-key scale") techniques in nineteenth-century Western art-music. Pentatonicism in nineteenth-century music encompasses hundreds of instances, many of which predate by decades the more famous examples of Debussy and Dvorák. This book weaves together historical commentary with music theory and analysis in order to explain the sources and significance of an important, but hitherto only casually understood, phenomenon. The book introduces several distinct categories of pentatonicpractice -- pastoral, primitive, exotic, religious, and coloristic -- and examines pentatonicism in relationship to changes in the melodic and harmonic sensibility of the time. The text concludes with an additional appendix of over 400 examples, an unprecedented resource demonstrating the individual artistry with which virtually every major nineteenth-century composer (from Schubert, Chopin, and Berlioz to Liszt, Wagner, and Mahler) handled theseemingly "simple" materials of pentatonicism. Jeremy Day-O'Connell is assistant professor of music at Knox College.
Book Synopsis Chant grégorien et musique médiévale by : Michel Huglo
Download or read book Chant grégorien et musique médiévale written by Michel Huglo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third in a set of four collections of articles by Michel Huglo to be published in the Variorum series. It brings together the studies of Gregorian chant and of later monophonic and polyphonic additions to the earlier repertory that occupied Huglo in the second phase of his research. Represented here are articles on the Kyrie, the introit tropes of St-Gall, an elegy for William the Conqueror (d. 1087), the versus by Venantius Fortunatus for the cathedral of Paris, the liturgical dramas of Fleury, early organum, the Mass of Tournai, and, finally, the Requiem by Eustache Du Caurroy.
