Book excerpt: Papers presented at a winter 1997 conference of the European Society for the History of Economic Thought reconsider the nature and significance of Keynes' theories and economic policies, and illustrate the diversity of Keynesianism in different European countries throughout the century. Main themes are Keynesian theory, Keynesian- type policies and theories throughout Europe, and how Keynesian policy has been used by government and non-governmental organizations in an attempt to deal with unemployment and deflation during the 20th century. Pasinetti is a professor of economics at Catholic University, Milan, Italy. Schefold is a professor of economics at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Book Synopsis Money, Investment and Consumption by : O. F. Hamouda
Download or read book Money, Investment and Consumption written by O. F. Hamouda and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Hamouda s book is very timely and thought provoking and should be an eye opener for students of economics who were brought up in the anti-Keynesian last decades of the twentieth century, or were taught the garbled rather than updated revived Keynesianism which has recently become popular. Y.S. Brenner, Retired Professor of Economics, Utrecht University, The Netherlands Contrary to the commonly perpetuated belief that Keynes s theory is appropriate only to economic depressions, the author of this provocative book maintains that Keynes provided a complete set of macroeconomic relations and the ingredients of a new theoretical model, much more reflective of and analytically appropriate to the 21st century than those on which current macroeconomics is based. With the perspective of Keynes as the backdrop, the author begins with a discussion of the characteristics of the financial crises of 2008 and the 1930s. He then goes on to show that Keynes provided a novel, general theory, constructed as the EC-SP model (different from that of the Classicals Labour Theory of Value model and the neoClassicals antithetical IS-LM model), a theory yet unrecognized as being behind both A Treatise on Money and The General Theory. He presents here the premises of Keynes s contributions which still await use by a generation of economists to reassess macroeconomics and orient it in a new direction. This unique and authoritative look at Keynes s body of work will be an essential read for scholars and students of economics. Anyone trying to understand the state of the entrepreneurial economy , of which the 2008 financial crisis is but one manifestation prone to recurrence, will find the work an important resource.

Book Synopsis Macroeconomics: An Introduction to the Non-Walrasian Approach by : Jean-Pascal Benassy
Download or read book Macroeconomics: An Introduction to the Non-Walrasian Approach written by Jean-Pascal Benassy and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroeconomics: An Introduction to the Non-Walrasian Approach provides the approach to macroeconomic theory based on the non-Walrasian method. This book presents the microeconomic concepts that can be applied in a simple and relevant manner to the fundamental topics of macroeconomic theory. Organized into five parts encompassing 14 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the fundamental concepts, describing the functioning of nonclearing markets, the role of expectations, the setting of prices by decentralized agents, and the derivation of optimal demand and supplies. This text then studies various non-Walrasian equilibrium concepts. Other chapters compare the classical and Keynesian theories of unemployment in the framework of a model. This book discusses as well the asymmetric price flexibility into the basic model. The final chapter deals with a dynamic model with explicit expectations, which allows a comparison of the employment effects of various expectations schemes and their realism. This book is a valuable resource for economists.

Book Synopsis Analysing the Structure of Economic Models by : J.P. Ancot
Download or read book Analysing the Structure of Economic Models written by J.P. Ancot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1984-03-31 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the structure of a large econometric model is rather like the art of winetasting or like the art of playing a musical instrument. The quality of a wine results from a complex combination of various elements such as its colour which should be clear and crystalline, its smell which can be decomposed into a general aroma and a variety of particular characteristics, more or less persistent depending on the type and the age of the wine, its taste, of course, which again is a complex system whose equilibrium and charm depend on the whole set of ingredients: alcohol, tannin, glycerine, sugar, acidity . . . Similarly, a clarinetist's musicianship depends on the quality of his instrument, on his embouchure, fingering, tonguing and articu lation techniques, on his sense for rhythm, phasing and tone colour. However, the enchantment produced by a Romanee-Conti or by a brilliant performance of Brahm's F minor sonata for clarinet and piano arises from a process which is at the same time time much simpler and much more complex than the straightforward juxtaposition of individual causal relations. In recent years econometricians and macro-economists have been challenged by the problem of keeping abreast with an ever increasing number of increasingly more complex large econometric models. The necessity of developing systematic analytical tools to study the often implicit and hidden structure of these models has become more evident.
