La raison en etait, sans doute, que, d'une part, les erreurs de Descartes sur la connaissance de Dieu et sur l'origine du monde rendaient trop evidente sa faiblesse dans le domaine de la metaphy sique, et que, d'autre part, les progres realises de son temps, et non sans son louable concours, dans les sciences natu relles, donnaient a croire qu'il eut laisse loin derriere lui les siecles anterieurs, meme dans la conception speculative de la nature. Jusque vers la fin du dernier siecle, la lutte contre la philosophie scolastique avait principalement pour objet la theorie de la nature en general et l'anthropologie en particulier. De nos jours on a etendu cette controverse, et avec une ardeur tres-grande, aux questions qui touchent a l'origine du monde et a la connaissance de Dieu par les creatures. Par rapport a ces deux questions on accuse la sco lastique, non - seulement de n'avoir pas extirpe les erreurs du pantheisme, mais encore de les avoir propagees, sans le savoir ni le vouloir, parce qu'elle en contenait au moins les germes caches. On va meme jusqu'a dire que dans l'an thropologie, comme dans toute la philosophie de la nature, elle aurait favorise cet ennemi de toute'verite, cette erreur funeste qui divinise la creature. Ce livre se presente donc tres modeste ment comme une introduction a l'etude du neo - eriti cisme. Il ne voudrait etre qu'un expose aussi clair que possible d'une doctrine difficile a entendre. J'ai multi plie volontairement les citations. Recueilli lesiormules ou la pensee s'exprime avec force et avec nettete. La cri tique meme est subordonnee a l'intelligence de la pen see et ne tend qu'a la mettre en lumiere. Je me suis attache surtout a l'exposition de la premiere philoso phie de Renouvier, convaincu qu'elle restera son titre devant la posterite. Je n'ai insiste sur la religion, a laquelle il est arr1ve tardivement, que pour montrer en quoi elle affaiblissait et contredisait les theses ori ginales du neo - criticisme.
