Book Synopsis Introduction to Reformed Dogmatics by : Auguste Lecerf
Download or read book Introduction to Reformed Dogmatics written by Auguste Lecerf and published by James Clarke Company. This book was released on 2003-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auguste Lecerf was one of the ablest 'reformed' theologians of the twentieth century. His lectures at the University of Paris were praised for their succinctness, controversial skill and deep learning. His Introduction to Reformed Dogmatics was incomplete at the time of his death in 1943. The first two volumes, translated here, entitled De la Nature de la Connaissance Religieuse and De Fondement et de la Specification de la Connaissance Religieuse, stand on their own and form a major contribution to theology. Part I discusses the nature of religious knowledge whereas Part II concentrates on the question of apologetics in Calvinism whist exploring philosophy and dogma. Lecerf's work forms a profound study of the nature and basis of religious knowledge and offers a valuable critique of European philosophy from the standpoint of authentic or classical Calvinism. The work has become an influential and widely regarded Calvinist work, and is valued for its penetrating insights and strong Biblical emphasis. Anyone with an interest in Calvinism should remember the enigmatic words of the visitor to Lecerf's door in 1930 who introduced himself with these words: "M. Lecerf is a unique personality, they say, he is in fact the last of the Calvinists and when he dies the type will be extinct. So whatever happens, do not fail to pay him a visit.".

Download or read book Scepticism in the Enlightenment written by R.H. Popkin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-12-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting with Richard Popkin's essay of 1963, `Scepticism in the Enlightenment', a new investigation into philosophical scepticism of the period was launched. The late Giorgio Tonelli and the late Ezequiel de Olaso examined in great detail the kinds of scepticism developed during the Enlightenment, and the kind of answer to scepticism that was developed by Leibniz. Their original researches and interpretations are of great value and importance. As a result of their work Popkin modified his original claims, as shown in the last two articles in this volume. The book contains an introduction by Popkin and 10 essays, two of which have never been published before. This collection should be of interest to students and scholars of 18th century thought in England, France and Germany.
Book Synopsis Children of God in the World by : Paul O'Callaghan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children of God in the World is a textbook of theological anthropology structured in four parts. The first attempts to clarify the relationship between theology, philosophy and science in their respective approaches to anthropology, and establishes the fundamental principle of the text, stated in Vatican II's Gaudium et spes, n. 22, "Christ manifests man to man." The second part provides a historical overview of the doctrine of grace: in Scripture (especially the teaching of the book of Genesis on humans 'made in the image of God', as well as Paul and John), among the Fathers (in particular the oriental doctrine of 'divinization' and Augustine), during the Middle Ages (especially Thomas Aquinas) and the Reformation period (centered particularly on Luther and the Council of Trent), right up to modern times. The third part of the text, the central one, provides a systematic understanding of Christian grace in terms of the God's life present in human believers by which they become children of God, disciples, friends and brothers of Christ, temples of the Holy Spirit. This section also provides a reflection on the theological virtues (faith, hope and charity), on the relationship between grace and human freedom, on the role of the Church and Christian apostolate in the communication of grace, and on the need humans have for divine grace. After considering the relationship between the natural and the supernatural order, the fourth and last part deals with different philosophical aspects of the human condition, in the light of Christian faith: the union between body and soul, humans as free, historical, social, sexual and working beings. The last chapter concludes with a consideration of the human person, Christianity's greatest and most enduring contribution to human thought.
